Buying new...

The generator is just what we needed for a smaller house. But, we made a mistake. We bought a brand new generator to replace an older 7KW that we wore out.
We didn't buy a new switch since the switch was specifically designed for the Briggs generators up to 15kw. The first time the power went out the generator ran for 30 minutes then shutdown due to an under voltage fault.
It took the electrician several trips out and phone calls too numerous to count before they tracked down the issue to the transfer switch motherboard. If you buy a new generator, buy a new switch!

This is my first large generator, and the 18 wheeler delivered it on time. I was wondering about unloading it into the back of my Chevy Truck. The tail gate lift worked great and the generator was in good shape. After the driver and I unloaded the generator into my truck I took the generator home.
I had a 2x6 set up to lift her off my truck, with the generator being at that point 605 pounds. I used a wide strap and looped it through the crate it was in, and lifted it up off my truck bed- that was a lot of weight. I eased the generator slowly to the ground with my Red Devil, all the while hoping my 2x6 would hold the weight; so that part worked out.
From there I knew I could put the generator in place with my electric winch. Over the next day or so I dug out a level area and winched the generator into place. Since I'm an electrician I wired her into my outside electrical box.
Then I set up a 100 pound propane tank that should give me a few days run time when the power goes out. Your local hardware can help with plumbing your propane. By the way, I did install the new jet for propane. After checking for leaks with soapy water, I was ready for a test run.
To my surprise the generator fired right up and I did an electrical test to make sure I was getting all my power; and sure enough I was.
I feel better having this generator so I'll not lose everything in my refrigerator next time the power goes out for a week or two. I think with the stronger storms people need a Home Standby Generator.
