Stanley CH5 Reviews & Ratings
Variable screens and sturdier bag
By Dennis G.

Review Posted 04/28/2015
My Stanley 15-HP is two years old now. Last summer, fuel started dripping out from under the motor. It was under warranty, but the warranty did not cover what was wrong with it. It seems debris got into the 'float valve'. It has been 'purrin' ever since. The collection bag is a joke. Should be twice as long and twice as thick.
The grommets ripped out the first two months' of use, and the 'cord tighter' that holds the bag to the machine came apart in two weeks. The threads holding the bag together have now ripped out. Needless to say, I'm looking to purchase another bag that will fit, but much sturdier.
The 'start cord' popped on me three weeks ago, but a quick trip to Northern had a new one on in no time. Would love to see this machine to have variable screens, possibly a smaller hole size for smaller mulch, and a larger hole size than what comes with it. I'm still trying to figure out why they did not put a blower on this monster. I have to clean out the screen each and every time I fill up the bag.

The chipper part works fine but-

See the trailer hitch? See the base behind the wheels? When you try to tow the chipper, the base acts like a cultivator, and digs a 1" ditch behind you. See the wheels? They are about 15' apart, and that is much to close together for this top-heavy machine. It will tip over on you when towing, for no good reason.

Some Problems

Chipper came and works as expected. However, the towing bar does not tip the unit sufficient to avoid dragging the stand, causing it to rip the turf.
After a few hours of use, the brackets holding the belt cover fractured (two of the three) but I was guaranteed a replacement cover - which has not arrived yet.
As a final comment, the grommet holding the bag tore off during the first use. I don't think using the bag is a truly supported feature since it doesn't fill well either. In most other respects, the chipper works as expected.

Chips Ahoy!

We have been using the Stanley Chipper for about six months and are chipping quite a lot of small trees into compost (from twigs to up to three to four inches - don't over do it). The Stanley chipper does quite a good job once you learn its limitations and adjust the drive belt. The electric start is excellent. It uses quite a lot of gas but rarely needs oil added. It takes a long nose funnel to add oil. The machine is quite noisy, but that is to be expected. All in all it is good value for money. We would buy it again.

A big mistake

I bought this "top-of-the-line" product last April. I used it briefly just to make sure how to start it, engage the blades, etc. In November, barely 6 months later I had a pile of brush to deal with so I put it to the test. In less than 1 hour of use I had to remove the chute twice to unclog the cutting blades. Then the blades stopped cutting entirely. Many phone calls later I was directed to take it to a factory authorized serviceman. The verdict was that the belt had frayed and broken. Remember, that with less than 2 hours chipping. The serviceman took pictures of the belt and explained to GXI that the belt was an inferior product. GXI refused to cover the repairs because the belt isn't covered under warranty. I left after paying a repair bill of $115.56. I can't even sell the chipper for fear that I would be ripping off the buyer. This has really soured me on Stanley's products and service.

I looked and looked for a good c/s and saw all small, high priced units. Then I came across the Stanley c/s. Well when I got $130.00 knocked off for being a vet? I could not pass the sale. It is one strong machine, in quality and looks. It looks like a heavy duty monster.
It is very easy to use, starts wonderful with the electric starter, and if anyone buys this unit. The instructions are a must to read. ***** Do not put any big branches in to the top hopper. Well I did, jammed the blades up. Cooked the belt in 5 sec. My mistake. Put large branches in side shoot only...only...only. Other wise, I love this machine and would recommend it. I just love it.

It eats trees

This was my 3rd chipper. The bag was a bust. One of the grommets broke (duck taped it back), the bag ripped in two spots (duck tape again), and the bag choked up the discharge so that the belt burned up on the second use of the chipper. Clean out was not easy until I used my blower to clean it out. About 3 hours of work.
I loved the way it swallowed the 2 to 3 inch diameter trees.
It is not easy (for me, an 83 year old) to push it around by hand. Much care has to be used when one gets it to the balance point of tipping so that it does not come back at one and hit your face with the funnel and knock you down. I did have a nice bruise on my chin that people thought my wife caused.
I am looking forward to my 3rd shot at using the chipper and its electric start.

It was simple to get ready: added oil as instructed, assembled chute and tongue as instructed, added gasoline, plugged starter in, set choke, and it cranked and started almost immediately.
Attached it to my lawn tractor and pulled it to where I had a bush that had been cut down and immediately began shredding. By the way, I am 71 years old so if it was easy for me it would most likely be easy for anyone.
The packaging was exceptional and delivery truck had a power lift and the driver brought it to my garage where I could work on it.
Good experience.
