  1 Question
Q: Does the Simer 2330 Automatic Submersible Utility Pump function only when there is water present? Am I correct in assuming that I need only to connect a hose to it and plug it into an electrical outlet, no timers, etc?
by Terry Weygandt from California on March 23, 2012

A: The Smart GeyserTM is fully automatic in operation. The
“smart” controller starts the pump every 2-1/2 minutes
and causes it to run for 5 seconds. If it senses that there
is no water to the pump, it stops. If it senses water, it
continues to run until the water is pumped down to 1/4"
deep, and then it stops. It then goes into a
7-minute quick-detection cycle, starting 4 times the first
minute, twice the second minute, and once a minute for
the next 5 minutes. If by the last check it has not detected
water, it resumes its cycle (running 5 seconds every
2-1/2 minutes) until it senses water again.

The Smart Geyser, is just that, smart. This pump is like any other utility pump, except most other utility pumps run continuously. That means you have to stand around and watch the pump until the water has been pumped dry. The Smart Geyser will turn on and off automatically every 2 1/2 minutes. This pump comes with thermoplastic construction for impact and corrosion resistance. It also has thermal overload protection so you don't have to worry about walking away from the pump while it's... more

Not So Smart
I bought this item not once, but twice. I had an old Simer one-sixth HP pump for years, but it finally called it quits. I figured I would upgrade to an automatic pump for my basement, so I wouldn't have to stay up all night to turn it off when it is done.

So, I plug it, rest it in my basement filled with 6 inches of water, and away it goes, pumping out a steady stream of water...for five seconds, then shuts down for 2.5 minutes, then away it goes...for five seconds, then shuts down for 2.5... more

Most likely the reason you're only getting 4 GPH is because the pump is losing it's prime. Due to the design of the pump, air getting trapped in the discharge line will cause the pump to not operate correctly.

Can Not Rely On This Product.
My house is built into a hill and the driveway wraps around with the garage underneath the house (basement level). When there is spring snow cover (I live in New Hampshire) and then a good steady rain (or even a warm day with a lot of melting), water will puddle in the corner of the driveway and then build up enough to get 2-3 inches of water in my garage and basement. I bought this Simer 2330 thinking that if I could put it out in the AM when I left for work when I knew it would rain,... more

2330 Pump. Poor Water Sensing
Bought this pump because of the internal auto detect feature and because it would drain water to within 1/4" of the bottom. I have a 14" round sump hole two feet deep. I have a back flow valve and a 1" pvc discharge hose. The pump started and stopped 6 times to drain that hole and then does its auto detect every few minutes. So all summer even if there is no water in the hole the pump still starts, checks and stops every few minutes. Probably the worst pump I have ever bought... more
Pros: Easy To Use, Quiet
Cons: Poor Control For Water Sensing

I'd suggest using a sump pump for an application like you described. While this pump may work in an application like yours, there are better options.

Ivan the pump is working as designed. I suggest you purchase a sump pump instead of this utility pump

Pump Does Not Run With Garden Hose
My pump runs fine until I attach a herder hose then it shuts off and goes thru the water detection cycle. I reported this to the tech assistance at simmer and they to old me to install a one inch tee a attach two hoses. They say that restricted flow make it think it has no water, what a joke....not a very smart pump. Maybe this should all be laid out in the operating instructions and they should keep the one inch by hose adapter if it creates to much restriction. Besides that great pump.

For small pumps like these, try using the shortest length of hose possible. It will prevent air-lock and maximize your discharge rate.
