  1 Question
Q: What will a 5000 watt generator power in a house? Furnace, well pump?
by Ken from New York on August 27, 2011

A: A 5,000 watt generator will get your basic survival appliances running at the same time.

This buying guide will help clarify.

How to Pick Perfect Emergency Generator

You can connect them with extension cords, but the better idea is to install a power transfer system. A furnace, for example, doesn't have a cord to plug into.

Instead, it's hardwired. You'll need a transfer switch to get the furnace running during a winter blackout.

They are much easier to connect and safer to manage the power.

After October Of 2012 We Said "never Again"
I had planned to use my generator in an outage but never had actually done it when the October 2012 storm knocked out power for 8 days here in Connecticut. It took me a few hours to run all the cables and extension cords and to figure out how to shut things off and on again and keep everything balanced.

It was a nightmare but we endured it. As soon as possible I ordered this kit and had my electrician install it. It must be good because it's always back ordered! It looks great and runs... more
