  1 Question
Q: I noticed that the Oregon splitter with the Honda engine is a lot more expensive than the model with the Kohler engine. Is this the only difference between the machines?
by Mario from New York on April 13, 2013

A: Mario - yes, the Oregon log splitters are basically identical in features and design other than the engine that powers them. A Honda engine is considered to be a premium grade engine in terms of performance and reliability, thus the difference in the prices of the two units.

Poor Design
do not buy this splitter without the log catcher (cradle) the wood falls on the Hydraulic cap and will damage it, the engine also is vulnerable, wood debris build up under the hydraulic cylinder and fall on the motor muffler and burn very annoying to smell burning wood while splitting, bark jammed the throttle and was difficult to get out, the filter and hose is too close to the operator you drop a log and it will break, an inexperienced operator wound damage the splitter in minutes, I think... more

28 Ton Oregon Splitter W/ Honda Engine
This thing works great, I have been splitting 40" plus diameter Spruce with 6-8" knots and it plows right through it. The machine quality is top notch, there are no weak points on this machine. It starts right up on the first pull and runs great.

I ordered the Honda engine because I got it for the same price as the Kohler (different website, their mistake) otherwise I think I would have ordered the Kohler because I do not think the Honda is worth $500 by itself.

There have been... more

Well Built
This is no cheesy log splitter.

It is very well made, beefy and strong- it works and runs great!

I would definitely recomend it, I have no regrets.

So Far So Good
Other than renting a log splitter once before purchasing one, we don't have much experience with log splitters. This one is easy, the instructions were very clear, the Honda motor purrs quietly when idling, and it cuts through large Oak logs like a hot knife through butter. Overall we are very happy so far.

My only issue, and it's minor, is that it's delivered in 3 large pieces and a bunch of smaller ones in one large wooden crate. The 3 large pieces were a little difficult to maneuver when... more

Needs Better Engineering
I have been cutting and splitting wood for almost 40 years. Last year I split about 45 cords. I used a bigger home made splitter that was very slow. I have split about 12 cords this year with my new splitter. It is very fast and powerful.

my complaints are this. First of all, the splitter should not be sold without the work tray. Big pieces can fall off and hit the motor. The tray should also be big enough to protect the motor. Secondly the ram stops a good 2 1/2 inches from the end, i... more
