UPDATE ON NORDIC AUTO PLOW
By John M.
Glen Gardner, New Jersey
Purchased 10/22/2014 |
Review Posted 02/07/2015
This is an update after using the plow several times in various conditions.
The most important thing to know about this plow is that it is NOT a $3500 plow that has the ability to raise and lower OR change angles. This lack of versatility is it's major drawback.
My driveway has two parts. A top part that is about 30 feet by 35 feet and a long part that is 11 feet by 300 feet. Thought and practice are required to figure out the best way to clear the top part. Turning must be done very slowly or the plow can drift off to one side or the other and then you have to get out of car to reposition the plow. This is a pain. The long part of the drive is much easier but any curbing is a problem and even then you can't just drive down the 300 foot drive, turn around, and come back up because of the curbing problem noted below.
I think the maximum this plow could do would be about 6 inches of medium heavy snow or 4" of heavy
snow. I haven't had a chance to see how much light fluffy snow it could do but my guess is maximum 8".
A few other tips I have learned:
1. Drive very slowly - maybe 2-3 mph at most.
2. Very important - do NOT try and go forward over any curbing or irregularity. IF the plow catches a hard obstruction in the wrong way - it will break. I broke the plow going over a 1" lip at the end of my drive doing this. Notice in the videos, the driver backs up over the curbing. Even 1" can be too much if caught the wrong way.
3. The good news is that the company that handles any customer service calls - Agri-Fab- is very good.
They answer the phone and sent me out replacement parts promptly and no cost since still under warranty. They must know that parts are going to be broken, especially by first time users. However swapping parts is time consuming, so in the future, I am going to baby the plow a lot more.
4. There is a real learning curve to operating this plow. IT is tedious if any turning is involved.
5. The plow will crack if any obstruction is hit going forward. The car is just too powerful and the plow has no give.
6. It is not going to do the whole job - some shoveling or snow blowing will be necessary.
Would I buy again?? I don't know yet.....I'll send in another update after further use now that I think I am familiar with some of the pitfalls. Hope this helps.

Nordic Auto Plow

Review Posted 11/26/2014
Okay, just had a chance to use the Nordic Auto Plow for the first time.
First lets talk assembly:
I am fairly handy with home improvements and familiar with using and repairing different kinds of equipment, eg, my snow thrower and my lawn tractor, which I do all repairs and maintenance myself. The auto plow took about 3 hours to put together. The directions are sometimes misleading, and the lighting on the online video on Youtube is poor so it's not always easy to see what area is being referred to. But overall, I would rate assembly as easy to moderate in difficulty. The hardest part is getting the plow to line up exactly with your car. This took some trial and error. Also I have a Subaru and we had to remove a section of the plow because with all sections in place it was just too wide. So I'm using 4 sections instead of the included five. Anyway, it is fairly time consuming but overall fairly straightforward. The assembled product is very heavy duty. Not junky at all. The plastic is thick, and designed with lots of reinforcement and multiple fail safes built into the design.
Using the auto plow for the first time:
I have a 300 foot long driveway and the top of the drive is about 40 feet by 40 feet for the turnaround. The snow today was extremely wet and heavy and was about 4 " deep. It was essentially one step away from slush.
The good: The plow did the job except for part of the top where maneuvering was too difficult. It worked well on the long part of the drive but because the snow was so heavy, I had to make about 5 passes to get it all off. There is a definite learning curve. For example, it sometimes goes off to one side and you have to get out of the car to adjust it (not hard). Maybe I need to tighten the orange straps more but I think the bottom line is that since the plow is not really connected to the car, it can have a tendency to drift off to one side. I can tell you this, compared to a snow shovel or snow caster, the car with plow on moves the snow much easier, even if heavy.
More good news even after over an hour of pretty hard use, the plow held up perfectly. No discernible damage at all.
Bad news: it's not as easy as the video online when dealing with heavy wet snow and a longer drive and the turnaround at the top. I asked my wife to come out to let me know how things were going, and because of this, she would give it a downgrade.
Overall, I would give it a B minus, because the drive would have been almost impossible without it. I tried my snow blower and it clogged repeatedly.
I definitely think that it will move light fluffy snow much easier. I will add an addendum after another snowfall.
Also even though it wasn't as easy as I thought and took longer than I thought, 90% of the time is spent in the warm car, so that is a huge plus.
At this point I would buy again and I have a feeling next time using it will be a bit easier.
Hope this helps.

Pushes snow but breaks easily
By Mel

Quite a bit of assembly is required for this puppy. I'd anticipate about 2 hours.
The product is of questionable quality and overpriced. The plow itself is made of injection molded plastic, the hardware is pretty cheap. Two bolts sheared off during my assembly and another two broke the first time I used it.
That said, it works, kinda. I use it with my 2001 CRV, had to install it on the tallest setting. It doesn't really seem useful for 1" or less of snow but does push more out of the way. Keep it slow, have somewhere to push the snow and it should work.
I don't think it costs them even $40 to make this, so really quite overpriced, but the only thing of its kind so consider it if you have a lot of surface to plow.
I'd have gone with a 2-stage blower in retrospect.

Have had parts of the plow break and the straps dug into the sides of car and pieces on the car broke, and that is going slow with the plow. Not good for lots of snow with weight to it.
