Had problems with Mantis 2-cycle 9" tiller
By Don H.

Review Posted 09/29/2015
I bought a Deluxe 2-cycle tiller April 2014 and had mostly nothing but problems keeping it running. I used recommended fuel/oil, kept air filter clean. After a few hours of use the engine would either fail to start or if it did, quit soon. The engine was replaced and same result. Was not able to return it for a 4-cycle since it was after the 90 day period. VERY UNHAPPY!

Manufacturer Response
I am very sorry to hear of the problems you have had with your tiller. Could you please be more specific on recommended fuel/ oil? We have had a lot of problems with fuel and the quantity of ethanol which is especially hard on 2 cycle engines. I am speaking from experience my 140hp 4 cylinder outboard engine was a victim. If you can buy non-ethanol gas, if that is not available from a local gas station try checking with a local power equipment dealer and see if they sell fuel in a can (I know PED has it), worst case buy only premium gas and use it within 30 days, using the proper oil mixture.

I was growing weary of hand tilling and turning a clay-based soil. My weariness has been resolved by my new Mantis. Light and powerful. I start it and turn the dirt, then pat myself on the back for making my purchase decision! Awesome!!!

Not worth the hassel

Purchased the Mantis tiller/cultivator to help in our garden. Assembled it and used it once, it has never started again. Purchased a 2 year warranty, but nearest service center is in Indiana! Not pleased as it will cost for shipping, to have it looked at.

This is my second Mantis mini-tiller and I'd have to say, they don't make them like they used to. My first one purchased 12 years ago was a dream. I didn't start having trouble with it until about 2 years ago. I'm already having trouble getting the new one started. Well, actually it starts ok, it just stalls out after a few seconds. I've learned to try to start it before the flower bed is ready to be tilled, then the second attempt 20-30 minutes later is usually successful. That was the trouble I was having with my old machine, prompting me to buy the new one. Go figure!

I'm happy with my Mantis.

The Mantis performs even better than I anticipated. Used as a cultivator, it destroys weeds and keeps them down for an extended period of time due to the depth it turns up the weeds. An excellent device!

If I can ever figure out the proper idle setting, it would even be better. As is, it runs much too fast and can cause a lack of control at the high speeds when cultivating. I'm still experimenting with the idle settings. Other than that it's a great little machine. I'm happy I have it. I threw my hoe away.

Hard To Start
By Old Biddy

I have no idea why engineers are unable to design an easy start small tiller or why Mantis does not design this stiller to be electric start capable with a hand drill. Not only that but once it is started it dies easily. I am 80 years old and I still like to garden. The big, heavy tillers are too much for me to handle and the small ones are a b***h to start and keep running. My big, well-muscled son even has a hard time getting this tiller started and it takes multiple pulls on the pull starter even for him. :-( I wish I knew of a good, light weight tiller that was easy to use and easy to start.

Expert Response
We are sorry to hear about your poor experience with the starting on your Mantis tiller. Like all 2-cycle engines, they can sometimes be difficult to start from time to time. With 2-cycle engines being so temperamental when it comes to easy starting, if you are already not doing so, I would suggest looking into a pre-mixed fuel, as the carburetors on these engines really seem to hate any ethanol at all in the gasoline and this can lead to hard starts and no starting at all. If this does not assist a little, I would suggest giving Mantis a call and see if they would be able to offer some assistance.

Most expensive tiller in History
By Clarence P.

Review Posted 05/10/2015
I have spent a fortune on my mantis 2 cycle tiller. Today I pulled it out again (still has the repair tag on it from last week) and it will not start again.

I have spent $160 in repair charges on this piece of junk in the last 3 months for 1 hours run time. Anyone who is stupid enough to fall for this piece of junk deserves what they get.

Can you be more specific as to what repairs were required? Were they fuel related?

As good as you're going to get in a small tiller.......

......but I still wish it were easier to use. I'm 80 now, so my review won't mean a thing to anyone under 60 since I don't have the strength I had at 60 and earlier. which makes all the difference when using a small tiller. My local small engine repairman recommends Mantis as he says they hold up better than other brands.

I just wish Mantis would make a model that has electric start capability as I don't have the pulling power to get it started. (My son starts it for me.) The Craftsman I just threw away (It lasted 2 years and died) I could start with an electric drill which was the only good thing about it but it was a pain in the butt to use. Didn't like it. Mantis does the job best for light weight tillers but all small equipment like this is a PITA in the long run.
