What type of fuel does this standby run on?
Gerald
from Florida
May 16, 2018
Answer
The 22kW standby unit runs on either Natural Gas or LP (Propane). The unit will come from the factory setup for NG but can be converted very easily to LP at the time of install.
+
Can this generator be set up without the auto start feature? I want to set it so I would have to manually start it and shut it down. It would be tied to the bottom side of a 200 amp main breaker that controls all the power to my home. It would be on a pad and connected to a LP gas tank just like a normal set-up would be.
Jimmy J.
from Mississippi
January 05, 2017
Answer
Due to the control wiring and the communication from the Generator to the Automatic Transfer Switch this unit cannot be manually started and operated. This is for all standby generators that we sell. I would recommend one of the Prime Power units that can be manually operated and are rated for continuous use.
+
What size LP gas tank is recommended for this generator and how many hours of run time is expected for the generator operating at 1/2 load?
Glenn R.
from North Carolina
January 04, 2017
Answer
The minimum LP tank size per Generac is 250 gallons. If you are on a colder climate that drops below 40 degrees you will need a much larger tank. It is very common for people to use 500-1000 gallon tanks for their standby generators. The run time will always vary since the LP tanks are not full capacity and a typical 250 gallons tank only has 150 usable gallons. This unit uses 2.16 gallons per hour @ 50% load and the run time would be approximately 3 days. The sizing should be calculated using 100% load and would recommend checking with a plumber and/or LP company to properly size the tank for your application.

Do I need the automatic transfer switch in order for the generator to exercise itself?
John A.
from Missouri
December 21, 2016
Answer
A Generac automatic transfer switch is needed in order for the unit to exercise and run. This is due to the control wiring that is needed from the switch to the generator.
+
Is there a cold weather kit for this?
Joe B.
from Oklahoma
December 20, 2016
Answer
Below is a link to the three items for the cold weather kit. The breather heater is not needed unless you are in a very cold climate such as Montana or Northern Minnesota.
Generac 9-22kW Air Cooled Battery Heater Kit
Generac 9-22kW Air Cooled Oil Heater Kit
Generac 9-22kW Air Cooled Breather Heater Kit

Do I need to add a pressure regulator for the gas or does the unit have one already?
Joe M.
from Texas
December 18, 2016
Answer
The regulator included in these units is intended to fine-tune the pressure entering the engine. A primary regulator may need to be supplied in the field if gas pressure entering the unit is too high. Generac requires a pressure of 3.5"-7" w.c. for Natural Gas and  10"-12" w.c. for Propane.  This would have to be determined by a local plumber and/or gas company. Further details can be found on page 17 of the installation manual.

Hello Mike. Will the Model RTG16EZA3 transfer switch work on this model?
George
from Pennsylvania
December 15, 2016
Answer
According to Generac the transfer switch listed will not work with the 20kW generators or larger. This switch will only work with the smaller 8kW to 16kW units.
+
Hey Mike. Would it be possible to run this generator using the LP version and an 8 gallon propane tank if we only need it to run for 2 hours? I need to run temp power for a construction site to back up some of the emergency lighting with a small generator.
Pius K.
from California
December 14, 2016
Answer
The Generac standby units are for emergency backup power only and must be tied to a utility source for them to operate properly and to maintain their warranty. The generators internal controller needs to have utility power present to operate properly otherwise the system will error. These units cannot be manually controlled and are not Prime Rated. Prime/primary power type generators are built specifically for off-grid applications. A prime power generator must be 1800 RPM and liquid cooled. Any air cooled or 3600 RPM generator is a standby generator only. If you attempt use a standby generator in a prime power situation the generators life expectancy can be shortened considerably and the potential for premature failure is increased dramatically. Prime Power Generators.

How do you properly size a generator for a 1500 sq. ft. to 2000 sq. ft. home?
Kenneth F.
from Arkansas
December 13, 2016
Answer
Properly sizing the generator is crucial to the success of any generator installation and requires a good working knowledge of electricity and its characteristics, as well as the varying requirements of the electrical equipment comprising the load. A certified electrician needs to be consulted for proper sizing and installation of any generator. When analyzing the electrical load, consult the manufacturer’s nameplate on each major appliance or piece of equipment to determine its starting requirements in terms of amps and voltage which can be calculated to watts using Ohms Law (Amps x Volts = Watts). When choosing the generator output select a rating that is approximately 20 to 25% higher than the peak load (for example, if the load is about 8 kilowatts, select a 10 kW generator). A higher rated generator will operate comfortably at approximately 80% of its full capacity and will provide a margin of flexibility if the load increases in the future. Note: Applications that are commercial, all-electric homes, have heat pump systems or geothermal systems require special installation procedures and a certified electrician must be contacted to evaluate and install these types of systems. I just bought 22k Generac it will be 70' from the propane tank what size flex piping should i buy?
Dennis K.
from Wisconsin
June 30, 2016
Answer
Below is a link to the Install Manual that will cover the pipe sizing using LP. I recommend checking with a plumber or LP company for installation of the gas line.

Can the air cooled unit operate in warm weather conditions and not overheat. We just had a 122 degree day and if the electricity had failed, would this generator be able to handle the load in the heat?
Gene H.
from California
June 27, 2016
Answer
Thank you for contacting us.

Generac Air-Cooled Standby Generators are tested in accordance to UL 2200 standards with an operating temperature of -20 ºF (-29 ºC) to 122 ºF for normal operating range

Please let us know if you have any other questions.

Should I pour a concrete base to place this unit on or can you place on a level dirt pad?
Jim
from Iowa
September 03, 2015
Answer
Thank you for contacting Electric Generators Direct.

I would advise pouring a concrete base. Or I would advise looking into a GenPad.

Can aluminum wire be used to feed the breaker on a Generac generator?
Glenn
from New Jersey
December 11, 2014
Answer
Thanks for your inquiry.

When wiring the generator it must be in accordance with local jurisdiction and codes. If ALUMINUM conductors are used, apply corrosion inhibitor to conductors.

What type of oil should I use in my Generac home standby generator?
Jim
from Illinois
November 11, 2013
Answer
The maintenance section in the Generac's home standby owner's manual lists that the oil type is based on temperature ranges specific in your area.....

SAE-30 above 32º F (0º C)
10W-30 between 40º and -10º F (4º and -23º C)
Synthetic 5W-30 for all temperature ranges

All new models come with SAE-30 oil in them and have been test run at the factory for 25 hours and no break-in is required. The first oil change would be at 2 years or 200 hours, whichever comes first.

I'm not sure if this falls into the repair area but, I'm concerned about the sound this generator produces. Is there a way to lower that? Is there sound proofing approved for use for the interior walls of this type of home standby? My neighbors bedroom window will be 20ft from where I plan to install the generator. I would prefer doing something inside the generator as apposed to some type of fencing or other external methods.
Mark H.
from New Jersey
October 23, 2013
Answer
The manufacturers make every effort to reduce the sound of their generators as best they can keeping within NFPA and UL requirements. There are currently no options or parts available to install inside home standby systems to reduce their db(A) levels.

Your only option is location or sound barriers installed around the unit while keeping within NFPA and manufacturers distance requirements for proper fire protection, air intake and exhaust output.

We recommend consulting with your local inspector or AHJ (Authority Having Jurisdiction) as to the specific local code requirements.
