Thank you for visiting Electric Generators Direct.

In regards to your question, proper sizing of the generator is crucial to the success of any installation and requires a good working knowledge of electricity and its characteristics, as well as the varying requirements of the electrical equipment comprising the load.

When analyzing the electrical load, consult the manufacturer’s nameplate on each major appliance or piece of equipment to determine its starting amperage. The following formula can help determine the starting wattage. (Starting Amps x Volts = Watts) When choosing the generator output select a rating that is approximately 20 to 25% higher than the peak load (for example, if the load is about 8 kilowatts, select a 10 kW generator).

A higher rated generator will operate comfortably at approximately 80% of its full capacity and will provide a margin of flexibility if the load increases in the future. A certified electrician should be consulted for proper sizing and installation of any generator.

I have attached an estimated Generator sizing calculator is help you estimate the size to get started.

Can the air cooled unit operate in warm weather conditions and not overheat. We just had a 122 degree day and if the electricity had failed, would this generator be able to handle the load in the heat?

Can aluminum wire be used to feed the breaker on a Generac generator?

Thanks for your inquiry.

When wiring the generator it must be in accordance with local jurisdiction and codes. If ALUMINUM conductors are used, apply corrosion inhibitor to conductors.

Hi Jim, I am interested in the 22KW Generac standby generator. How long are the electrical cables that feed the disconnect switch? On television Generac is offering a free wireless monitor, do you also include it? They also include the 5 year warranty?

Answer
The standby generators that include the whole house style automatic transfer switch does not come with a wiring harness. Due to the multiple application installations the manufacturers will not estimate a wiring length so it is not provided. You will need to have your installing electrician provide the installation wiring. Wire sizing is based on installation distance and local electrical code requirements.

We do not include a wireless monitor with the generators. Occasionally Generac will run a promotion for such items which they sponsor but the order needs to be placed within the specific promotional time frame to qualify.

All of the Generac units have a standard 5 year warranty.

On your website, you list the Generac 6551 as having the capability of putting out 92 amps @ 240 volts. Based on that information, I ordered a generator and accessories from you. I will have a natural gas feed and according to Generac, this generator will NOT start my AC unit which requires 82 amps to start up. I am curious to know why your site listed the output as being rated at 92 amps, when in fact it will only put out 81.3 amps for a natural gas feed. I would like to speak to someone as soon as possible about this by phone or response to this email.

Thank you for your inquiry....

The Generac model 6551 has a rated output capacity of 22,000 Watts when operating on LP and 19,500 Watts when operating on NG which is posted on our site under the specs tab. We also show the maximum rated running amperage for the unit and we have the manufacturers spec sheet, owner's manual, installation guide and switch manual available under the download document section to help with sizing and installation.

All of the home standby generators have a surge output capacity which is well beyond the posted running loads. The surge ratings are not posted within the manufacturer's specification sheet or on our site.

Specification Sheet

The Maximum Surge Capability (LR Amps @ 30% voltage dip) for Generac model 6551 is 209A @ 240V 1P. Which is enough output to handle a standard AC system with an 82A starting requirement. However, if your new unit cannot handle the load when the AC system comes on then there is more load present in the entire system that is causing the generator to shut down.

It is our recommendation that you have either your installer (certified electrician) or a local Generac technician come out to verify all of the loads on the generator at start-up and also to make sure the unit is operating properly and producing the correct output. It is also recommended that the AC system is connected to the generators load shed manager to help alleviate the initial starting when the unit first comes on.

How big of a generator can I run with a 1 inch black pipe gas line. I would connect within a foot of the house gas regulartor, the generator would sit 10 feet from the regulator and would be an ell and a tee where I would connect. Please recommend an automatic transfer switch that would work with this generator and I could wire in after the main service power breaker for the house. Looking for a package recommendation

Answer
Mike,

Generator sizing is based on the starting loads of the major equipment in the home and the generator fuel pipe needs to be the first item after the gas meter.

For the 22kW model you should review the installation guide below and on page 19 it shows the fuel requirements and the pipe sizing is a couple pages after. The manual covers all models from 8kW to 22kW.

I was trying to guesstimate how large an LP tank I would need to keep it running for 2 days, which unfortunately happens sometimes in the winter in the mountains. Got any help? I realize running at full power vs. scaled down run affects consumption. In the winter, I would need to run electric heat pumps(2), water heater, and refrigerator constantly, but other things, like well water wouldn't be all the time.

Answer
The problem with cold weather and LP tanks is the BTU output drops drastically when the temperature drops.

Here is an example of the BTU output changes based on a typical 500 Gallon LP tank.....

40 degrees F - Output 792,540 BTU/HR

20 degrees F - Output 528,360 BTU/HR

0 degrees F - Output 264,180 BTU/HR

The Generac 22kW model 6551 requires 333,960 BTU/HR at start-up. So, if the temperature drops to 0 degrees F the tank will not have the output capacity to handle the starting requirements of the generator so the generator will not start. Going to a 750, 850 or 1000 gallon tank would be preferred so the unit can handle the starting load.

With that said, these tank sizes can handle several outage days.

Regarding your generator sizing requirements, applications that have heat pump systems or geothermal systems require special installation procedures and a certified electrician must be contacted to evaluate and install these types of systems.

Due to the tremendous starting load requirements of a heat pump system generator sizing is extremely important because even a 20 or 22kW generator may not have the output capacity to handle these high starting loads.

When analyzing the electrical load, consult the manufacturer’s nameplate on each major appliance or piece of equipment to determine its starting requirements in terms of amps and voltage which can be calculated to watts using Ohms Law (Amps x Volts = Watts).

When choosing the generator output select a rating that is approximately 20 to 25% higher than the peak load (for example, if the load is about 8 kilowatts, select a 10 kW generator).

A higher rated generator will operate comfortably at approximately 80% of its full output capacity and will provide a margin of flexibility if the load increases or loads are added in the future.

Another thing you will need to consider since you are in the mountains is generator output degradation due to high elevations. Generators lose 3.5% wattage output for every 1000 feet above sea level so again proper generator sizing is extremely important.

Answer
We have a grading scale on every model along with a Good, Better and Best listing.

The grading scale we offer on the site has our unique algorithm which is the secret sauce that powers our rating system.

It incorporates manufacturer ratings, expert analysis and customer reviews.

Due to the variances in the rating this can alter a products overall grade.

As you see from our recommendations we rate the Generac home standby system as the best on the market today. This is due to their new line of product for 2013 which incorporates over 80 upgrades and the newest technology on the market today.

And now with their new 22kW (only one on the market) air cooled model with engineered advancements and better full consumption rates, Generac really stands above the rest.
