Poor self propel
By Kenneth S.

Review Posted 04/20/2014
I wish I had never bought this mower. The tires wear out extremely fast due to the poor design of the self propel. Trust me, you will not like this mower after you had it for a while. The tires will not last and as they start to wear. You will lose your self propel.

Manufacturer Response
We are sorry that you are having trouble with your Ariens Pro-24 High Wheel Mower. I reached out to our Technical Support group and they said that the drive system is a belt drive with a gear driving a soft rubber wheel on both sides. The self-propel system is adjustable to obtain the proper amount of spacing between the gear and wheel. If these are not adjusted correctly, the gears can start tearing at the tire. You can find the correct adjustment for these in the Owner's Manual.
Please try this to see if this will help with the performance of your mower. If you are not able to do the adjustments, please visit your local dealer and they should be able to help you.

Instructions are poor, mower didn't operate

The photos and instructions with the mower were of poor quality, and were for a different engine. After spending several hours assembling the mower, it failed to operate so we had to drive 100 miles to the nearest Ariens dealer and leave it for them to troubleshoot. Had we known buying the mower online would have resulted in this extra cost and inconvenience, we would have purchased it locally fully assembled.

What I needed

I walk about an acre and a half of lawn, taking about 2 hours. My old 21" Ariens mower, while a great mower, just wasn't dealing with my thick spring lawn anymore, so I figured that the 24" Ariens would do the job, which it has. The adjustments are not nearly as easy. Height and speed adjustments require time and tools to perform, but when I get it where I need it, it will stay at those settings all year. It cuts with absolutely no problem, with the mulching plug installed. No clogging or bogging-down. I keep my old 21" to get in close to fences and trees, because the 24" is not as maneuverable as the 21". The only mechanical problem so far is the safety switch, which needed to be tweaked to keep the machine running. The cable was not pulling the switch completely off, making it hard to start. Once I figured that out, it starts on the first or second pull every time.

Nice weed cutter. Poor tires

This cuts pretty nice and knocks down weeds at about the 8" level. No conclusion yet as to the "knotty tire" self propel design. Either cheesy or brilliant. Time will tell. Had flat tire in first hour. Inflatable tires in a weed environment is questionable. One small thorn or such and you're toast. Tires need to be more durable. I also question as they start to wear. The self propelling feature is dependent on the tire treads. Once they wear, the propulsion will be hampered I believe.
Quality of unit good. I have to address this tire issue however.

Lots of research led me to top out on and spend $ to meet the challenge of my special situation. It's a beautiful house on a good hill, ranging from 5-15% grade, with mixed greens, areas of tall grasses, and edged with woods. It's beautiful to view. I let the grass areas grow to catch water, reducing downhill running water during rain (like a bio-swale concept) and that works well. I cut and mulch these tall grass areas in fall before snow falls, and let them grow again the next year.
I see why they added a parking brake and clutch on the next year's 36" model. This 24" one doesn't have either (stopping on a hill is a runaway danger- happened once and then I learned). The engine shuts off when you remove your hand- there is no idle to allow you to step away to move branches. So it becomes an art to move with this machine while always touching it. I mastered that.
It is fun to use. The swivel wheels (a kit) make it dance in circles. The giant wheels climb stairs, rocks, & logs when you tilt it back. It is perfectly balanced to prance up the front wheels. I like the width- 24 inches- because I can drive it through normal doors with the mulch kit on (not with the default side chute).
It cuts my tall grasses easily. Runs and Runs. Simple, clean, open design which I like- nothing hidden or too fancy. Strong, and well built. I cut and mulch grass all summer and in fall, I cut the tall grasses and fall leaves.
The power to drive uphill has it's limit- the steepness of my hill in spots challenges the motor- and I think I might just again splurge and get the high traction kit for it.
I love how unique this machine looks with it's big 16-inch wheels and back-set motor on a platform with a low front blade pan.
So I'm happy and would buy it again just for the fun I've been having, and I look forward to more!

Living Up To Its Reputation!

I purchased this model at the end of the season after some significant research, to replace my 22" Craftsman High Wheel of 16 years.
So far the machine is easy to maneuver, powerful and steady; the noise level is low, engine efficiency is very good, and the 24" swath is efficient and time savings.
Down sides are minimal: deck height adjustments are manual and time consuming, but not an issue if you don't need to adjust it after; and the "engine on" handle becomes awkward and tiresome to hold down if you are using the machine for long durations--I have an acre to mow.
I love the machine, with its side exhaust and mulching configurations. Oh, still trying to figure out how to adjust the speed of the "self propel" mechanism as I am a fast walker and the mower weighs about 130 lbs to push.
10/29/12 If adjust the self-propel feature isn't covered in the Owner's Manual, please feel free to give the folks at Ariens a call at 920-756-4688.
Please be sure to have the serial number of your machine handy when you call Ariens so they can identify the model correctly.
