By  | Generator Product Expert

When a hurricane hits, you need to be prepared with the essential backup supplies. Your power is likely to go out, and even with the help of a generator, you want to make sure you are ready for the worst-case scenario.

Below is a list of things you should keep stocked in your Hurricane Supply Kit. Many of them are also recommended by the United States government and Red Cross.

Water

It should go without saying that hydration is of the utmost importance, especially when your air conditioning may be out. At a MINIMUM you should plan on one gallon of water per person per day for at least three days.

Food

Plan to keep yourself sustained with at least a three-day supply of non-perishable food.

First Aid Kit

Prepare yourself for any basic medical needs with a small first aid kit.

Flashlight with Extra Batteries

When power is out you’ll want to see where you’re going without having to use your phone flashlight power.

Battery-Powered or Hand Crank Radio

This allows you to hear the local news and other important weather information.

NOAA Weather Radio

Stay up-to-date with all of the storm information with a weather radio.

medication

Medication

At least a 7-day supply of medication will help you get through a hurricane when you’re not able to leave the area.

Cell Phone with Charger

Keep your phone charged, and look for ways to minimize power use. You may want to look into a solar charger or an emergency cell phone that runs on AA batteries.

Wrench or Pliers

You can turn off utilities with these tools if you need to.

Manual Can Opener

Enables you to access non-perishable canned food.

Candles and Matches

You want to make sure you have the ability to still light your rooms when power is out.

hurricane batteries

Extra Batteries

Keep extra batteries around in case you are running low on power with one of your devices.

Portable Generator

If your power goes out it's extremely helpful to have a portable generator around to keep your electrical essentials running. These items can help sustain you in the midst of a storm so you can be prepared, not scared.
