Jim, What else would I need beside a manual transfer switch to hook up the Winco HPS6000HE to my 200A service to my house.
Curt Geigle
from Wisconsin
March 05, 2013
Answer
The main items required to properly connect a generator to an electrical panel would be the transfer switch, power inlet box (outside receptacle) and the power cord.

Jim, Can the Winco HP6000HE-5500 Watt TriFuel generator be hooked up to a small 2000 sq ft. house and supply it with enough power to run basic appliances and lights with out damaging the unit or the house.
Curt Geigle
from Wisconsin
March 05, 2013
Answer
You can run the basics with a 5500 watt generator. This should be enough to run a refrigerator, sump pump and some lights without overloading the unit. The best way is to use a manual transfer switch and then manage the loads as needed. This load management can take a little trial and error to get exactly what you want running at the same time but with proper management it can be done.

I want to run my hps6000he tri fuel on a small propane btl like the kind for a gas grill...so can i just use the same kind of hose like the kind on gas grills with the normal regulator on it or can i just use a black hose without the regulator on it? Doesn't this generator already have a built in regulator for lp? thank you

Answer
These units "cannot" be used with a 5 gallon (20#) propane tank.

Here are the tank requirements from the owner's manual which are based on temperature (Found on Page 7)...

HPS6000HE

60 Deg. F - 40 gal.
30 Deg. F - 50 gal.
0 Deg. F - 125 gal.
-20 Deg. F - 350 gal.

Is there some kind of shutoff or check valve of sorts when using propane or NG to prevent leaking if the generator shuts off because of low oil?

Interested in a tri-fuel generator. NG spec 160ft/ hr. I have a half inch line off my main manifold to the backporch for a gas grill. Should that provide adequate flow?
David Distel
from Minnesota
September 16, 2012
Answer
Length of Fuel Line* -Fuel Line Size

Less than 25 feet -3/4 inch black pipe
25 to 100 feet -1 inch black pipe
Over 100 feet -not recommended**

I have 200A service. I am considering the winco 5500 watt as back-up for my house. Are components available that would allow me, in a power outage, to trip the main 200A breaker, then all the individual breakers, plug the generator into my main service box, ramp up the generator, then re-set essential circuit breakers, keeping within the 80% max start up load on the generator? If so, What components would I need, beside the obvious?
Thom
from Arizona
July 27, 2012
Answer
The best option for whole house set-up with a portable generator is model TWB2005DR which is a 200A rated whole house manual transfer switch allowing you to manage your existing circuits.

Will this generator (HPS12000HE) deliver full rated power while operating on Propane?
Joseph Smith
from New York
January 21, 2012
Answer
Per page 3 of the owner's manual you would Derate 10% for LP and 20% for NG.

This is true on all Winco Tri-Fuel models.

What is the LP gas line in pressure required to run this generator.
Joseph Smith
from New York
January 21, 2012
Answer
Correct fuel pressure cannot be stressed enough. The most common cause or inoperative systems is an inadequate or incorrect fuel pressure.

Power and performance of the engine is in direct relation to the correctness of the fuel system.

There are several fuel delivery systems mentioned in the owner's manual and should be referred to when connecting system.

Whichever fuel delivery system or type of vapor fuel used, the fuel pressure at the demand regulator installed on the engine generator must be between 4 and 6 oz. (7-11 inches of water column). Any lower pressure and the unit will starve for fuel under load. Any higher and the unit will ‘flood’ when attempting to start.

There is some very important LP tank sizing requirements in the owner's manual which needs to be reviewed.

Seriously considering buying the Winco 5500 Watt TriFuel generator for emergency backup. Does this model have overload protection, or is it necessary? Can you damage your generator by overloading it w/ too many watts? Please explain how this works and if it is something I really should consider in buying a generator. Thanks.
Jim
from Utah
January 21, 2011
Answer
Self-excited generators respond to severe overloading differently than the power line. When overloaded, the engine is not able to supply enough power to bring the
electric motor up to operating speed. The generator responds with high initial starting current, but the engine speed drops sharply. The overload may stall the engine. If allowed to operate at very low speeds, the electric motor starting winding will burn out in a short time. The generator winding might also be damaged.

CAUTION: EQUIPMENT DAMAGE
RUNNING THE GENERATOR SET UNDER THESE CONDITIONS MAY RESULT IN DAMAGING THE GENERATOR STATOR AS WELL AS THE MOTOR WINDING.

It is always best to consider the items you are planning on powering and calculate their starting amperage loads to find out the wattage need at start-up. It is best to size a generator to 80% of its running capacity to help prevent overload, voltage drop and damage to the unit.
