Don't believe everything that you read

Learned one thing for certain. Just because you do your home work. Read the reviews, access the options, and receive good service does not insure you will get the mower you hope to get.
I purchased the Troy-Bilt TR30R from Lowes after reading all the reviews I could find. I chose it over the Craftsman primarily because of the Briggs & Stratton engine vs the new MTD engine used in the Craftsman. Even though I liked the features of the Craftsman better. (Both mowers are made by MTD and are very similar)
Lowes offered free delivery to me after returning 3 times to pick up my new mower only to be told they had none assembled, "come back tomorrow". So when the mower was finally delivered I was anxious to get cutting. I found all the features to be comfortable and good quality but less than ten minutes in to cutting the engine stalled when the deck suddenly dropped to its lowest setting and scalping the grass at the soil level. I figured this was probably user error since this was my first time to use the mower. But after having it happened two more times I decided to investigate more closely.
Not really able to determine the problem other than something was obviously not right, I decided to call Troy-Bilt where all they did was tell me it sounded like an assembly issue and where the nearest authorized repair center was located. Three more calls to three different repair centers only insured my fourth call was to Lowes, where I will be returning the mower tomorrow and then going to Sears to purchase the Craftsman that is $70 cheaper. Add the $30 mulch kit and I still spend $40 less. "Hope their engine proves to be quality".

Don't Judge a Mower by It's Cover!

I wanted to wait until I used the mower a few months before I would give it a review. I bought this mower back in March '13 under good reviews and with the confidence of owning Troy-Bilt mowers in the past. Good experience with the purchasing, receiving and start-up sections (however, I did have to follow-up with MD to get my free mulching kit). Because this is a relatively light-weight mower, the front end does not turn easily around trees and on slight hills. In fact, after making a recent turn I noticed the front tie rod sticking out from the front of the mower. Somehow the clip securing the tie-rod either broke or came off and steering became very difficult. I have temporarily solved the problem using a bent nail. Other problem areas I found are getting at the battery terminals for servicing, loose gear-shift knob, front axle caps popping off, and difficulty adding gas due to control levers in the way. MD is not very customer friendly as they do not list my mower as a recent purchase and the operator's manual could not be found online. The only real positive thing about this mower is that it cuts very well.

Expert Response
We do apologize for any confusion you may have had. In terms of the mulching kit, this was something which was supposed to be included with all of these mowers. The problem was Troy-Bilt went ahead and discontinued this feature without actually notifying anyone of the change as the specs stayed the same. In terms of the recent purchase, the mower would not be listed any longer as Troy also decided to come out with a unit with a larger engine. We are not sure as to why they chose to do this during the season, but these are issues we cannot always control. Again we do apologize and are more than willing to assist in any issue you may have.

I have only used it 4 times but I have found it very rewarding. It cuts even with every pass. When my yard is finished, that's exactly what it looks like, finished. It starts on the first turn of the key. Not the best turn ratio, but easy to put in reverse back up and then keep on mowing. A great machine for the buck. Just love it. Uses less gas than my push mower did. Kinda makes ya wanna ride around for awhile, if ya know what I mean.

First riding mower I have ever owned

Retirement saw the need for something other than a walk behind mower for doing lawns for ourselves and our rental next door. Finding a riding mower cutting size less than 38" was difficult, but this one seemed to stand out because of its 30" size and good review comments. Once I figured out which lock outs needed to be in place to start it, I was mowing within minutes. I have mowed twice and it gets easier to operate at the proper speed, mower deck level and use of the brake gets more familiar. I would have given it five stars all the way around except for one glaring issue. Connecting the battery cables to the terminals took me longer than setting up the entire mower. The terminals are virtually impossible to get at and have less than two inches of clearance between the battery and the shroud. With the extra cap on the positive terminal cable (for protecting the terminal from corrosion) in the way, there is hardly any room for a wrench to tighten the bolts for a sure connection. I can hardly wait to try to remove the battery in the future! Other than that, It appears to be the right mower for my situation.

The unit was shipped very rapidly, and package good. Putting it together was very simple. I have only used it a couple of times, and am still getting use to it. I found it not as stable as I thought it would be, and stuck going around trees, which I have in my front lawn. Had to get off mower and push it by hand at one spot. The turn ratio is not to good, can not complete a four foot circle. It could have slightly more horse power for going up a grade. I don't think it is any better than a standard riding mower. I still have to use the hand mower in a lot of areas. If I know when I bought what I know now, I would have gotten a zero turn mower. If you go into reverse without cutting off the blade, it stalls on you. It does give you a nice mowing job and if you have a perfectly level lawn it would be a nice mower. I got a mulch kit. I paid the $50 for a lift truck on delivery, and I don't think it would have been necessary.

Carburator problem right out of the box

Mower started right away but engine ran roughly and would surge. I called Briggs Stratton and their tech listened to it run over the phone and said there was definitely a problem and to take it to an authorized repair shop. Fortunately my neighbor has a pick up and helped me haul it to the shop. Repairman is still working on it. He tells me it is the second Troy-Bilt with the same problem he has had in two weeks. If I had known a new model was coming out I would have waited. I wish I could trade it in for the new model. Hope it runs better when I get it back.

Snapper Knock-off

I purchased this mower back in March and I believe it was my worst investment ever. Not only did it cut my lawn uneven, it scalped it even on a number three setting. I had trouble with the seat from day one, the steering wheel always seems to be out of alignment and the deck lacks extra wheel support. Traction control is rated poorly and it gets stuck on inclines often. The child protection cutting in reverse button works when it wants to work and the deck was covered in rust in no time. I finally returned it to Lowes and got a larger model when I rolled it over on its side and down a 3 foot hill with the blade in gear while hanging on for dear life. The deck should be made wider to help it balance the mower and prevent tipping. Two complete flips on this mower with a spinning blade was not my idea of having a perfect lawn!

Happier after each mowing

Shipping was fast. Arrived in a timely manner. Didn't appreciate paying extra for a lift and definitely couldn't have gotten it off the truck without the lift. The assembly directions were good, except connecting the battery should have been done before assembling the seat and motor cover. Very hard to get to the battery as a last step, but that's the order things appear in directions. So, all set to mow! Well, not really. The battery was finally hooked up, but dead, probably from sitting on a shelf waiting for a good home. So, I jumped it from a portable charger and it started, but was really rough. My first mowing involved a number of jumps. So I bought a trickle charger and charged it over night. Absolutely you want one. Around $30 and easy to use. After this charge the mower has started every time. I'm sure I will need to do this again when I bring it back into service next year. On to mowing. I'm purposely waiting until now, after eight mowings, to write this review. After 2 I would have given it 2 stars. After 5 I would have made it 3 stars and now after eight mowings I give it 4 stars. The engine has smoothed out over time. I strongly advise purchasing a small bottle of Stabil, and putting a tablespoon or so in every tankful. Be careful on hills as it's really not intended to do much of an incline. However, for the price, I'm happy with it. Tight turning, nice cutting results and I will absolutely say I'm happy to have discontinued my lawn service and taken over with my new Troy-Bilt. It took time, but ultimately a happy customer!

Suggestions for future purchasers

The mower arrived 7 days after placing my order (instead of the two days that was shown at the time the order was placed). I would strongly suggest that you or Troy Built include a comment about trouble shooting, specifically the interlock mechanism on this mower and how to enable this interlink, since the mower will NOT start without this information. My son spent a frustrating evening trying in vain to start this mower.
After speaking with a technician at the local Troy Built service center the following day, the mower started without further problems. A customer would be well served if this information was included with the shipping documents. Further, a customer's experience with Troy Built And MOWERS DIRECT would be more positive.
