Best 21" Mower Made
By Michael C.
Xenia, Oregon
Review Posted 11/25/2015
This is the most durable, rugged 21" mower I have ever seen. It has steel wheels, pressurized oil system for hilly terrain, ninja blade mulching system, a very solidly built drive system, welded deck and the best overall mower in this category you will find. Well worth the cost, you really do get what you pay for.

Proven Commercial Mower
By Earl B.

Review Posted 11/27/2014
I purchased my 1st 21" Snapper "extra tough" in 1990 and it is still in good operating condition as a trim mower for my Simplicity rider.

I bought the new Snapper commercial 21" this month. My new machine has many of the same proven features, and is a bit beefed up. I appreciate the fact the Snapper and Briggs 850 professional are built in USA. I imagine it will last me another 24 years.

Wonderful,,, as expected

Review Posted 07/29/2014
I bought this to use along with the Snapper I bought 17 years ago. I am not one to participate in these type of reviews, but decided to because of all the negative reviews here that made me nervous to buy this mower. The mower is a great product, I have had no problems. I had an elderly friend recommend Snapper 17 years ago and bought one, paying way more than other mowers that were available. It has provided many years of mowing and continues to until this day. This new mower seems to be a machine with like qualities. I have used it this season with no issues at all. A wonderful mower.

Pros:
Durable, Reliable, High Quality, I'd Buy It Again
After 6m of looking, glad I bought this

Well, if you are like me finding a lawn mower is not easy. Features appear the same, no clear HP / torque comparison? Who is good quality. I have a 20 degree 1 acre rough farm yard to cut.

Looked for 6m. Needed side discharge, largest engine. Didn't want a huge Billy Goat (aka old Gravely). Looked at all sorts, Craftsman, Honda, had a Husq for 6m which was absolute garbage (paint came off, cord frayed, side chute broke x3). What to do?

Then you add the ethanol problem - manuals say E15 okay, dealer says drain carb every use, manual says store with gas...

I trusted my gut after at least 15 hours of looking and bought the Snapper. Never had one before. Had old Lawnboy and old Gravely.

This one is excellent - very well built, excellent drive disc system, pull start #2 each time. Cuts 10" grass well (again, a rough farm cut), NEVER has power problems.

Drive up steep hill and very uneven is perfect. Wheel size great.

Pricy but worth it. I like the construction.

It is a pain to assemble, but I bought it at the dealer and they did it. Anyone can assemble, just do it and reviewers should stop complaining.

Great mower.

One thing, I would find E0 gas at a marina or buy Trufuel from Lowes. You get better performance, and also better MPG so to speak. One tank lasts much longer.

After months and endless hours, this was a great buy.

Snapper is not what it was 40 years ago
By Mark H.

First, my situation is not MD fault, but Snapper. My grandfather, my father and I have used Snappers since at least 1962. Built well and last for decades. I'm not sure where they lost there way, but here is my experience. I purchased two Snapper Commercial Ninja self propelled mowers. I read all the reviews on MD website before I purchased, so I was already suspect of the packaging/shipping. Though the handlebar issue of damaging the bed has been fixed, both of our mowers had damage to the bed paint from poor packaging by Snapper. Also thanks to the review, I was also suspect of the trans not having any grease in it. The directions, nor the mower had any warning signs, stickers or verbiage that the trans was shipped empty. I had to buy two containers of "00" grease for these two mowers. This was filled before the first use, so no damage occurred there. The first mower works fine, has paint problems on one side and needed the grease. The other mower still sits un-used, due to the pulleys being out of alignment and the belt comes off when used. Snapper has used this design for at least 30 years and yet they can't get the pulleys in alignment before shipping. Other reviews noted this too. The alignment is not minor, it is off about a 1/2 inch. I did talk with Snapper and they said I would have to take it to a dealer and they would likely try to shim it or they would have to bend the bracket, based on which way it was out of alignment. The main support is welded on and cannot be moved. The stud for the mulch cover is off about 1/2" too. I think my bed was not sitting on the jig properly when this unit was built. I have always used my Father and Grandfathers hand me down Snapper and this was my first new purchase. I guess this is the end or an era. Other than these issues, that Snapper should not have come out of their factory, these commercial units are built tuff, almost all steel, very little plastic, heavy and solid feel to them.

Can Take the Texas Turff

I read the other reviews and was surprised this mower rated only a "B"... I saw it at my local repair shop (who swears by Snapper and they repair everything) after I killed off my 21 year old Honda HRV commercial grade. A Honda commercial grade not available on this site so went with this Snapper to replace my Honda when I hit a newly placed (and unknown) survey pin, placed right next to an old ground level stoop that kept it from moving at all, bending the blade and shaft beyond a reasonable repair cost for the old girl.. At any rate, this Snapper arrived just four days after my order.. Assembly was straight forward unlike other reviews... no missing parts, you just need to be a bit handy. Crank case was fine and full, again unlike other review. I added oil and gas and she started on the very first pull... Very smooth, very quite, very powerful, happy so far... Hoping she will give me 21yrs of service or more, like my Honda commercial...

CRAP

Last Snapper was 5.5 hp and was 15 years old. NEVER had any problems. Upgraded with a commercial Snapper with more hp. Been in the shop 2x already after 5 residential yard uses. 1st time - clanging noise. The whole red steel deck had to be replaced due to bad stamping. $400 they said it was the 2nd one they had seen like that. 2nd time- hex drive screw in drive train, nut stripped right off threads rendering drive inoperable. $40, all under warranty but if it's a sign of things to come, I wish I had my old one back! Very poor quality, disappointed...Garbage...

I Pretty Much Agree With Most of the Reviews Here

Opened the box. Missing some nuts that are necessary for assembly, but had extra assembly parts not needed for my model. Instructions are not good. Didn't come with any oil like other mowers. Had to run out and buy a couple of quarts. Can't tell if the transmission has the correct quantity of 00 Snapper grease in it. That stuff is expensive and from what I read doesn't mix well with other brands. This 00 grease is very important for the transmission, so I had to order some more online.

As far as operating goes, it started right away. Very nice comfortable design, with a cup holder too! Speed controls are very nice and easy to operate. Speeds go from comfortable to fast paced. Nice. The throttle control is easy to use and nice and smooth locking into high gear nicely. The forward clutch lever is also very easy to use and I was comfortable with it immediately. The engine shut off bar is a pain in the butt, but I haven't found one I like yet. It is uncomfortable to hold for any length of time. The foam wrap around the push handle is garbage. I mowed for one hour and it is ready to come off. No biggie, but come on guys. The mower cost over $700 you can't put a better grip on it?

Cutting performance is awesome. I even went into my field where I normally brush mow. It ate everything up effortlessly except the ultra high grasses which are actually longer than the mower itself. Doesn't bog down and turns everything into vapor. I think the 8.5 engine is the difference there. Really sweet.

All in all I think it could have been made a bit more heavy duty. I am really not a fan of plastic stuff on commercial grade equipment, but for something in that price range it's not bad at all. So, I am quite happy with the mower. Good luck.

Good commercial mower
By Steve

We use the mower in commercial property management. The mower starts well and has plenty of cutting power. The Tecumseh engine seems cheap with a lot of weak plastic parts, but so far we have not had any problems with it. The only drawbacks of the mower is the high cost and the weak documentation for setup.
