  1 Question
Q: I have had an electrician install a 50A RV type plug out side that handles 240 volts. I have plugged in my 3.5kW generator and after turning off the main switch in my panel for safety it worked fine. But, now I'm looking to buy a 8kW Generac generator. My question is what would the transfer panel do for me and do I need one?

by Bob Crawford from Florida on April 08, 2011

A: When properly connecting to a home circuit panel a manual transfer switch is required as the NEC (National Electric Code) states the plastic covered breakers (standard) in a panel are not suitable for connecting primary power/generator power.

With this said; your original connection did not meet NEC code and could have caused a fire in your home due to overheating plastic coated generator breaker that your electrician wired the inlet box to.

A manual transfer switch has the correct mechanical breaker internally that will properly disconnect your generator from utility service.
