Q: We are trying to implement watering the inrun and landing hill on an all weather ski jump. We have 8-40 psi sprinklers and use a watering wand. At the bottom of the landing hill we have somewhere around 15 psi, so we need an outdoor electric pump to boost the pressure for adequate sprinkling. Will the Red Lion RL-SP-150 suffice. Oh yes and we have serious budget issues. We live in British Columbia, Canada - no choice available, but state required
by Jim Vanderhook - Sea To Sky Nordics from Washington on July 01, 2016

A: Thank you for your interest in Water Pumps Direct. Before I can answer your question, I would need to know the following:

Total head (suction & discharge lift)

Total pumping distance from the water source to the pump and from the
pump to the furthest sprinkler head

Piping diameter on your suction and discharge (if already laid)

Total GPM & PSI requirements

Once you can provide this information, I'll be happy to assist you further. Also, please note that we only ship within the Continental United States.

Q: under your pros and cons, quietness, etc. is rated from 1 on up. is 1 being the quietest for the loudest?
by Ray from South Dakota on May 06, 2016

A: Actually, the number rating simply reflects the number of people that have selected that value, in this case, quietness, as a pro or as a con. For the RLSP-150 Red Lion 1-1/2HP Sprinkler Pump, 4 people have listed "Quiet" as a "pro" to date.

In reality, as long as the pump is installer properly and per the manufacturer's installation instructions, all of these pumps should operate quietly.

If you have any other questions, please let me know.

Q: Is there a switch to run 110 instead of 220?
by Bill Connors from Montana on June 21, 2015

A: Thank you for contacting Water Pumps Direct.

This pump is 115/230 Volt. Please see the owners manual regarding changing voltage.

Q: I need a recommendation. I want to pump water from a pond 100+ feet up an incline and have it go down a waterfall to oxygenate the pond. I need the size of pump needed to push enough water to make the water falls to look good. I need the pump to be electric. I also want to use it as a sprinkler pump. Will the Burcam 3/4 hp be enough? It seems to be adequate. As I said I don't need Niagra Falls, but to look good. Do you sell a protective box for pumps to be mounted outdoors?
by Ron from Oklahoma on January 12, 2014

A: Thank you for your interest in Water Pumps Direct. You might check out THIS LINK to help you calculate your required GMP & PSI.Once you know those specs, please feel free to check our website or I'll be happy to assist you further.
by Jim, Product Expert
Q: What kind of warranty do I have when I buy this pump.
by Andrew from Colorado on August 05, 2013

A: The Red Lion RLSP Self-Priming Cast Iron Sprinkler Pumps come with a 2 year manufacturer warranty. If you should have any problems with the pump, you would first contact Red Lion tech support. If they deem your pump defective, you would contact us with the name of the tech you spoke to and their diagnosis and we would handle the warranty for you.
by Jim, Product Expert
Q: Can the RLSP150 be used outside unprotected?
by Frank Wilhelm from Michigan on June 13, 2012

A: While any of these sprinkler pumps can be permanantly mounted outdoors, it does need to be protected from the elements and should be covered with some type of housing that also allows for adaquete ventilation.

Per the instruction manual:
Keep motor operating area as dry as possible. Install the pump in a clean, dry, and ventilated location that provides adequate drainage, room for servicing, and protection from freezing temperatures. Bolt down the pump evenly on a good foundation, preferably concrete, to prevent the development of unnecessary stress. Locate the pump as close as possible to the water supply to reduce friction losses in the suction pipe and to provide for maximum capacities. A foot valve
must be used.

This cast iron pump is designed for years of service and reliability. Sprinkler pumps are designed for proper lawn and garden saturation when you have an alternative water source.

This 1-1/2HP model is self priming, which means you only need to prime it once! This means less time to get going after the initial set up.

A great pump at a great cost and it takes our "Good" recommendation as well!

Works As Expected
Pump wiring instructions were pretty vague but I was able to wire and install the pump myself (I am not an electrician or plumber) in just a few hours. It would have been quicker but I had to make several trips to hardware store for extra fittings, etc. The pump itself works as well or better than the previous one and is much quieter. I am using the Red Lion pump for my lawn irrigation pumping from a lake.

Didnt Last
The first red lion was purchase on 2013, broke down on 2014. Still on warranty, new one arrived 2014. It broke down this month 2017. Now warranty is over. So I have to find a better brand that will last for more then 3 yrs.
All that money, and this product very disappointed.

Customer service was very good before in sending me a new replacement, but I hate that the pump doesnt last. It was install professionally, and always covered. They just do not make products to last.
Pros: Price, Easy To Use
Cons: Low Quality, Unreliable, Durability

Well Made Pump
This Red Lion 71 GPM 1-1/2 HP Self-Priming Cast Iron Sprinkler Pump 614672 is well made and it is my intention to make use of it for a long time to come. The option to use 110 and / or 220 volts is a great built in feature in my opinion.

Great Product Except For A Minor Problem For Me
Works great. Ran 250 feet of 1 1/2 inch pvc pipe with 5 3/4 hose hookups along the outside of two sides of the property . Run all 5 at one time with no problem. Pull the water out of the lake through 20 feet of 2 inch pvc at a 5 foot slope. The only problem with the pump is i cannot get the fill plug out. Tried a wrench and a just able wrench using a hammer to try to loosen it, does not work. Called pumps direct.. Said to try a lubricant on the fill plug. That does not work. All the help they... more

I Got Burned On This One. Luckily I Had My Old One...
Generally I think the Red Lion pump is solid. But this motor failed me. I salvaged the new pump casing, and put it on my old pump, so I'm back in business with my old Red Lion. Basically I paid $300 for a pump housing.

I Think, I Purchase The Wrong Pump.
I think, I purchased the wrong pump. Pump is to big for my system, draw's to much G.P.M. Because it draws to much water from the feed line. Feed line is 5/8". Which feeds house and sprinkler system. The sprinkler system needs the pump to boost the pressure up the hill. With out starving the system.

Which pump should I use. Should I use the 3/4 h.p. motor with the 35 G.P.M.
Pros: Price, Quiet, High Quality, Exceeded Expectations
Gary Recommends This Red Lion Product
Jim, the Water Pump Expert
Product Expert
Gary,
All of these types of pump required a 2" suction line. Based on your comment that you're using a 5/8" suction line, I'd suggest you contact a licensed plumber to determine which pump would be compatible for your application.

Product Works Fine Once You Get It Going
This pump does an excellent job once you get it operating. For a self priming pump it doesn't meet my expectations. It is difficult to get it pumping. Any small opening in the input piping makes it cavitate I'm still working with making it work for me.
Pros: Price
Cons: Heavy, Difficult To Use, Unreliable

This pump is all steel, well built. Can be 115 or 230 volt, currently using 115 Volt. I will switch to 230 Volt for better performance when I can, for now running great. Thanks
