I purchased this pump from Sump Pumps Direct and love it. We've had the worst rainy week here in the last 2 years. The pump is triggering once a minute right now. My concern is that is not good for the pump. My pit is narrow but fairly deep, so each cycle is only pumping maybe 2 gallons. The 10 second shut off is not the issue as the pit is pumped dry. Is there any other float options, to allow more water in the pit before triggering. I have the float as high as possible given the piping and too high of course will affect the backup float.

Answer
Hi Anthony. These pumps and switches are designed to handle the rigors of the switching cycles during rainy days and periods so you need not worry as long as those cycle rates decline when things dry out. If you absolutely want another option however, you might consider the HydroCheck model HC6000 Electronic Hi-Lo Pump Switch. This would offer you two sensors, one for your "ON" level and one for your "OFF" level to give you complete control of your cycle rates. Please note however, that this is strictly for your main pump operation only and NOT for your backup pump.

HI. Comparing this to the Liberty combo. Liberty states it has solid handling. My washing machine drains into my sumo pit so that includes lint from clothes...can this pump handle that? And also, what battery choices are recommended for back up?

Answer
Dave,
While most sump pumps will work, they are not designed to handle the chemicals associated with laundry detergents and bleach and as such, a better option might be to consider draining this water to a LAUNDRY/DRAIN PUMP SYSTEM instead.

As for the pump you were looking at, How high vertically & How far horizontally are you pumping?

Can I use a maintenance-free marine battery with this system?

Answer
Yes, but you would need to connect the water sensor from the controller, to the positive terminal of the battery.

Are the switches adjustable so I can set the water height for them to turn on? Does the float turn off the pump or does it run for a set period of time?

Answer
The float switches can be adjusted and moved higher or lower, though you may need to get a bit creative to achieve this due to the actual design of the piping on this system. The float switches are timer based. The primary pump will operate for about 10 seconds once the float is raised and drops back to it's original position. The backup pump will operate for about 25 seconds once the float is raised and drops back to it's original position.

Jim I recently purchased this pump Unfortunately after a heavy rain with both pumps running I still had an overflow. Would running separate 1.5 discharge lines for each pump increase the GPH capability? Seems like the Y in the lines might create a bottle neck?

Answer
While the initial setup and installation of combination systems such as the PHCC Pro Series PS-C33, does make for an easier installation, running a separate discharge for each pump will definitely help to provide for each pump's true pumping capacity in cases where both pumps need to operate at the same time.

Jim - Any issue wth installing a redundant check valve on the discharge pipe prior to connection to the unit...in case one of the valves in the unit fails? Would it impede flow in any way on a 10' lift?

Answer
You would realize some additional friction loss and a slight reduction in GPH. Generally, you should have one check valve installed for each pump in your system. And those check valves should be replaced whenever you replace your pump.

Hi Jim, thanks for answering my questions about the PS-C33. It sounds like a great combination pump! One thing I’m concerned about is surge protection, as we get a lot of storms in Minnesota. Do you know what type of surge protector is recommended for this unit? Thanks, Terry

Answer
Thank you for your interest in Sump Pumps Direct. For all the PHCC Pro Series units, we recommend around 2000 Joules or higher surge protection.

Jim, why would you recommend this combo as "Better" over the "Good" Basement Watchdog 1/2 HP unit when the other unit has more power in the primary and backup pumps? I'm considering a combo unit and would love to hear your thoughts.

Answer
If you're looking for a heavier duty system, the Pro Series PS-C33 is actually a contractor grade system compared to the Basement Watchdog BW4000.

The main difference between the two is:
1. The BW4000 will handle 3200GPH at 10 feet for the primary pump and 1730GPH at 10 feet for the battery backup. The PS-C33 will handle 3000GPH for the primary and 2400GPH for the battery backup system. A bit less capacity on the primary than the BW4000 but considerably more capacity on the backup pump.

2. The PS-C33 will accept 2 batteries connected in parallel to double the run time. The BW4000 does not give you this option.

how long will this battery run with loss of power.

Answer
When using the recommended Basement Watchdog battery, you should get approximately 8 hours of continuous run time and 24-36 hours of non-continuous run time on a full charge. Please note however, that these ratings are based on a new battery and will diminish over time and cycles the battery has used. By adding a 2nd battery, you can double that run time to 16 continuous and 48-72 non-continuous.

PS-C33: Will it fit in a 12" dia sump pit? Can I use a sealed battery? Thanks.

Answer
The Pro Series Pair of Pumps combination system is compact and will fit in a sump pit as small as 12” wide. It measures 23¾” inches from the bottom of the pump stand to the top of the Yconnector where it will be attached to the discharge pipe.
The battery fluid sensor is designed to fit the Pro Series Standby batteries. Measuring the battery fluid is one of the most important features of the system, since about 80% of backup sump pump failures are the result of a battery that has dried out. If this is difficult to maintain for you, you can also use a maintenance free battery with this system.

what type of switch does the backup pump in the pro seriespsc33 use? Is the obove system a very good system? I don't need a wet basement when returning home. Jim

Answer
Each pump on this system utilizes a dual float switch.

The dual float switch on the primary pump contains two large floating rings enclosed within a protective cage. Water will lift the bottom float by ¼”, which will activate the pump. If for any reason the lower float does not activate the pump, the water will rise to the second float, and it will activate the pump. As the pump
evacuates the water from the pit, the floats will drop. The pump will run for an additional 10 seconds to extend the cycle after the lower float drops. The blue controller for the primary pump powers this switch.

During a power outage, or when more water is entering the sump than the primary pump can handle, the backup pump will automatically begin pumping. It also has a dual float switch, so if one float fails to activate the pump, the second float will activate the pump as soon as the water reaches that level. As the water
recedes below the float switch, a timer in the control unit will run the pump an additional 25 seconds to empty the pit.

This is probably one of the better high output combo systems that we carry and I would highly recommend it.
