Leaks On Its Side
By Donald M.
Idaho
Purchased 08/06/2023 |
Review Posted 10/13/2023
Overall, I'm happy with this purchase. It started easily, restarted easily, runs smoothly and quietly, and delivered decent power. It mounts right up to my boat and with the correct fittings, takes an external tank with no trouble. It has an internal tank you can use for a reserve as the motor will run for 40 min on the internal. Now for the not so great - it leaks oil when laid on its side. There are two bosses on one side for you to be able to lay the motor either on its side or on its back (5 sides of the cowling down) for transport. Mine leaks engine oil when on its side OR back. I built a wooden stand for it that I transport and store the motor on because of this problem. I think it's a good motor with an annoying problem.

Shipped without oil. No obvious instructions to add oil. All it would take is a simple tag attached to the motor saying to add oil. Engine seized up.

Honda 5 HP

Perfect fit for my 10Ɖ" RIB dingy. Self contained fuel tank with the ability to connect to larger fuel tank. Lighter weight vs. 9.9 HP was the main reason for selection.

Disappointment

Starts 50% of the time. Nothing like being on the river and your motor won’t start. It also bogs down at full throttle. Assumed I would lot have to take it to the shop being a new engine. If I knew that I would have bought a used one off marketplace. I was told and assumed a Honda would be a great engine. Not the case. Find another brand.

First and foremost, thank you for your purchase. We are sorry to hear you are having issues with your unit and want to reassure you factory warranties cover defects in materials and workmanship. Honda would need to be contacted directly at (770) 497-6400 to start the warranty process if you have not done so yet. If they are unable to troubleshoot the issue over the phone they have Local Service Centers that can also assist you and apply the warranty for servicing the unit. If their service doesn't meet your expectations, or if there's anything else we can please email us and we will be happy to help. We will forward your review to the manufacturer so they are aware of the situation.

VERY Temperamental When Starting
By Todd
Maine
Purchased 05/21/2023 |
Review Posted 06/26/2023
I bought this based on other reviews and I wish I didn't. The motor works great - when it works. Purchasin was good, delivery was good, power is good, features are good, but it is extremely temperamental when it comes to starting. Probably 3/4 of the time it's fine. The other 1/4 is a whole different story. It acts like it is out of gas or is flooded - when it's always full of gas and every flooded starting technique doesn't work not to mention that you can't smell gas like I have with other flooded engines. Wait 10 minutes, try it again, sometimes works sometimes doesn't. Not at all consistent.

I've had a number of outboards over the years and have never run into anything this finicky. It makes zero sense and follows no pattern. I've tried everything, internal tank, external tank, making sure the internal never gets below 3/4 full in case the fuel pickup is too high, giving it more time, less time, you name it. Nothing helps.

There is nothing like being out on a lake a mile or more from the nearest house with an engine that won't start. Very unreliable and not very useful in the back woods of Maine.

If I could, I'd send it back and get a different brand in a heartbeat. What a waste of money. Not happy at all with this purchase.

Honda 5 HP Outboard Motor
By Ronald B.

Review Posted 12/16/2022
I love this motor, it works great on my 16-foot Cataraft, for running rivers, or trolling fishing. I purchased an extra prop in case I hit a rock river running. I also installed a river prop protector.

Layed motor on the side in pick up & motor oil leaked out all over, was on the side with 2 stops as recommended, and had problems starting many times. Not reliable.

Oil Leaker
By Steve P.
New Jersey
Review Posted 09/12/2022
We love this engine, but whenever it is stored on its side, then lifted up and put in a vertical position it leaks a lot of oil and makes a huge mess. Ruined our driveway, our clothes, and shoes as we lifted and held it to put on the boat. Not sure why this keeps happening. Not even sure how/why/where oil could even get out? Cap is on tight. Engine works fine, but oil keeps coming out after stores on its side.

Would Not Run
By Ken B.
California
Review Posted 08/17/2022
Finally got it started and it ran for about 10 minutes...cut it down to see tool speed and the engine coughed and quit. Would not start again. The motor is now in the shop in Sacramento for warranty work. Purchased the engine because I had had really good luck with Honda motors/equipment. Not real happy at this point.
