Q: Just received Model 9010400 in good order. When facing the engine I see TWO yellow plugs. The literature says the RIGHT one is the oil fill (thanks Briggs and Stratton for making it so accessible - not), but what is the LEFT one for? Nothing in chipper or B&S literature about that one. Thanks.
by Louis Benjamin from New York on July 21, 2015

A: Louis,

Both plugs are likely oil fills. Companies typically make an engine with two access points for oil. This way the engine may be used on all different equipment in many different positions that will block access to one of the oil ports. You may contact Briggs (800) 743-4115 with your engine model and serial number and they will verify this for your specific engine.

Q: why is the earthquake Model 9010400 not on your good, better or best list?
what do you use to push the leaves down into the hopper?

by Ron Marble from Arizona on February 02, 2014

A: Ron - you would use a larger piece of material (branch or limb) that is being chipped to push leaves and other material into the hopper. You do not want to use a 2x4, broom handle, etc.

Chop Chop!
This woodchipper is great. I've used it for small tree limbs, brush, and leaves.

There is a certain learning curve to using it efficiently and not getting it clogged by stuffing too much stuff at once down the top chute but, once you learn it you'll be very 'chipper'.

This thing breaks limbs down small. I removed the tri-hammers once to see if I could get bigger chips but they were still very small.

Next time I do larger limbs I will try removing both tri-hammers and j-hammers. It... more

Shiiping And Assembly Processes Needs Help
I ordered the 305cc Earthquake chipper. Chippers Direct apparently contracts an independent shipping Co. to deliver the equipment.
One of us had to be home in order to receive the chipper, This was inconvenient since both my wife and I work, and had to take time off. I understand though that it ensures the delivery is made to the right customer. I wasn't home, but my wife was and the chipper was required to be inspected for damage before being accepted. My wife had to have the delivery guy do... more

More Than I Expected
After looking at various model chippers I settled in on the Earthquake with the larger motor. I am glad I did because this thing is great. More than enough power to handle yard cleanup without bogging down at all. The bag hooks on kind of goofy but does work and it is cumbersome to move with such a low handle. Being its so small though it is a lot easier to store. Not as loud as I thought it was going to be. The safety guards do make it hard to work with but are removable if you choose. Hands... more

Bad Everything
Purchased the product and it blew up (literally) within 2 minutes of operation. Can't seem to get anyone from Chippers Direct, Earthquake, or Briggs & Stratton to take responsibility.

Good Machine
I previously owned a Craftsman Chipper Shredder. The engine eventually seized and was irreparable. At first I was hesitant to buy a new machine as I was sure I needed a larger one, but couldn't see spending $1500 for it. Also, my property is not level which means that the machine has to be moved around by hand including up and down some stairs.

After a lot of research I selected the Earthquake machine with the larger engine. I appreciate all the time people have put into writing reviews,... more

The service from Chippers Direct was great quick ordering, quick delivery and that's were it ends. Now the nightmare unpacked it oiled it fueled it used it for 10 minutes died. Never ran again called it in Chippers said it was an engine problem so I called Briggs they had me send it to a local dealer got word back it was a broken rod dealer got in touch with Briggs on the warranty and said no coverage because the motor was run without oil..... Really !!! Sorry I'm not that stupid now I have a... more

Jim,
You stated that you added oil before you started the engine and made no mention of an oil leak. Provided you added enough oil I don't see how they determined that the motor was run without oil. You may contact Briggs & Stratton directly at (800) 743-4115. Please also give us a call as we would be happy to investigate this further with Briggs & Stratton. 800-710-7499

Broke Immediately
After the first 15 seconds of running a 1.5 inch diameter limb through the chipper, it completely stopped. A wood chip lodged in the blade. I removed the cone and the wood chip, replaced the cone and restarted the chipper with much difficulty.

Within another 30 seconds, the engine blew up, leaving a hole in the side of the engine about the size of a silver dollar. A pretty harrowing experience. ChippersDirect sent me to Earthquake who sent me to a local retailer to piece it back... more

Powerful 305cc Engine
I needed a small chipper recalled a 5HP used years ago that was underpowered so I got this one with the largest engine available. The 305cc engine has plenty of power, I have not bogged it down yet and I have put in 3" dia. branches (hardwood and bamboo) .
I did have restart of warm engine issues at first but I found that about 5/8 to 3/4 choke would restart the engine with no problems when it was warm. A larger catch bag would have been nice for leaves, but, for hardwood, the bag... more

Well Worth It
Needed something to shred lots of Oak leaves, branches and other shrub material. I compost all material and return the compost to my yard and garden.

WHAT I LIKED:
1-Dry (mostly) leaves are broken up reasonably well on the first try and if you have the patience and time, re-running the leaves through the hopper, really breaks them up. Limbs up to 2 to 3 inches thick were no problem, IF they were reasonably straight. Otherwise, don't even try.

2-The shredder motor is very, very... more

Decent Unit
I live in TN on a 5 acre parcel, about 75% uncut woods. It has a beautiful log cabin, but there are too many trees that are close to the house, and when they drop acorns, it sounds like a bomb on the metal roofs.

We can use the firewood, but needed a way to dispose of the small branches and small limbs. I did research on the 'Net and ended up purchasing the larger Earthquake chipper/shredder. I have had it about 6 weeks now, and have about 10 hrs. with it.

It comes with thin plastic... more

Expectations Not Exactly Met
Had same issues as Timothy H. Hopper assembly not easy because safety flaps obstructed the view. Also had to use needle nose pliers to open both oil caps. While one of them is more accessible than the other having the filler tube would make it easier. Had to use a file so the holes would line up. Was missing a couple of nuts that they shipped to me after I called. I'm not an engineer but it seems like it could have a better design.
