Q: When Breaking hard new ground your supposed to run the tines in reverse while you run the tiller forward. Does the blades and tines run just backwards and/or forwards or is there a setting to run half the tines one way and the rest the opposite simultaniously?
by Tim Tuttle from Tennessee on May 11, 2015

A: Tim,

Using counter (reverse) rotating tines is the most aggressive approach and is best when breaking new ground. This tiller is "Dual Rotating". At anyone time the tines are all rotating in the same direction either all forward or all counter (reverse). Dual rotating allows you to select either forward or counter rotating tine directions.

Q: Can you get this tiller with an electric start?
by B Rutherford from Louisiana on March 12, 2014

A: The Cub Cadet RT65 tiller is not available with an electric start if you want the Honda engine. The RT65 only comes with an electric start with the Cub Cadet 208cc engine: RT65E

Q: Hi - I'm building a fence around my garden and am interested in the width of the Cub Cadet RT65 and Husqvarna DRT900/DRT900H so I know how wide I need to make the gate. Don't want to build a fence and find I can't get the tiller into the garden!
by Roger from Colorado on September 02, 2013

A: Roger,

We are looking at a max width of about 23" when the RT65 is fully assembled, and the DRT900/900H are the same size with a max width of about 20.5".

If you have any further questions, always feel free to contact me directly at 800-710-7499 Ext. 133.

I'm always happy to help!

Q: Hello,

Are there other attachments that can be used with this tiller? Perhaps a hiller/furrower?

Thank you!

by Katie from Vermont on February 11, 2013

A: Katie - sorry, but Cub Cadet no longer offers a hiller/furrower for their rear tine tillers. They did, but they dropped it from their offering a year or two ago.
by Robert, Product Expert

Q: What size wheels does the cub cadet rt65 tiller have
by Wendell Kratz from Arkansas on February 08, 2013

A: Wendell - the Cub Cadet RT65 series tillers have a 16-inch pneumatic ag tread tire.
by Robert, Product Expert

Q: looking at the Cub Cadet RT45 and RT65
RT 65 has a honda engine
who makes the RT 45 engine ?
Are the tilers identicall except the engines?

by Jim Ace Rental from Minnesota on February 05, 2013

A: Jim,

The RT45 uses a Cub Cadet engine. Cub Cadet build their own engines.

The 45 has counter rotating tines, 13x5 tires, 12 inch tines and five depth adjustments up to 6 inches.

The RT65 has dual rotating tines-all forward or all counter(backward)-, 16 inch tires, 13 inch tines and six depth adjustments up to 6.5 inches.

The Cub Cadet RT65 dual rotating rear tine garden tiller is built tough and it's priced so that any homeowner can afford one! This workhorse will dig deep and turn over the most compacted soil with ease.

Recall Needed
I have the same concern as I have found 33 other complaints with the same concern after one season of less than 20 hours of use the gears are now stuck in the forward position and the tines are not turning, up until then it was doing a great job I till the same garden plot I have had for 10 years in sandy soil with no rocks or roots. Now something has came loose in the gear box and free spins 120 degrees with no engagement of any of the 4 positions stuck in forward gear and no tines turning.... more

Great Product
Starting tilling today for a garden in virgin soil with lots of rocks! After tilling and cross tilling the grass layer in forward tine I lowered the tine setting and tilled in reverse tine the tiller lifted the rocks out with no problem. I think to go slow and throttle down is the best way to handle the rocky soil. The Honda engine has plenty of power!
Pros: I'd Buy It Again, Easy To Use, Quiet
Cons: Bad Instructions, Packaging

Great Product
I purchased this tiller locally. I live in Yucca Valley and we had loads of rain that brings in the weeds. I am 84 and this tiller keeps me exercising. I have tilled my 1/2 acre behind my home and my large front yard. I do not have the Honda engine but no complaints with the one I have. I have hit many rocks up to 3 inches, but not a problem. Love the product and am happy I did not go smaller. I am a pool retired California Contractor and dug my own pools. So this tiller is a fine... more

Cub Tiller
This is a great tiller. I used it now for about one month. It arrived by truck in great shape, no damage. I just had to attach the handle and control cable. They even included a quart of oil. It is nice and quiet and starts very easily. Plenty of power to get the job done. The only drawback is that it is a little difficult to turn around with the axle being locked, I wish they would have a steering system like snow blowers do, where you can unlock one wheel to make turning easy. One other thing... more

Great Tiller
I bought the Cub Cadet because of the front weight, dual rotating blades, the larger wheels and the Honda motor. So far it has done a great job. It is very easy to use, as a woman I was concerned about being able to control it. Not a problem at all. We have very rocky soil and it goes through it very well. The pull start is very easy to pull and starts after a couple of pulls when cold and 1 after warmed up. The self propel feature is great too. My garden is at the bottom of a steep hill... more

Rotilling In Hard Clayey Soil
This tiller did a great job preparing our garden. It has plenty of power and starts right up. One caution that I learned was the reverse gear operation. One needs to be cognizant of what's behind you when you put it in reverse. I learned to basically step aside and let the tiller go beside me. The tiller will give one a great full body workout and the end result will be a garden ready to plant. I especially like the large diameter wheels and the counter-rotation of the tines. The latter... more

Stuck In Gear
I have about 15 hours on mine and it is stuck in forward gear and forward tine rotation. This seams to be a very common problem. All I can suggest is read more than one review online. I would not buy this tiller again.
Cons: Unreliable, Durability

Works Great If You Till With Something Else First.
The Engine and transmission seem to work well and it seems well built, although, I have only used it a couple of times now on pre-broke dirt. My only complaint is that it can't take a very deep "bite" on any single pass. It may take more practice running it and getting used to it though. I can only compare it to my front tine tiller which was a piece of cake tilling up a 3000 square foot garden. With the front tine I could do the whole thing with one pass to get about 6-8 inches... more

Cons: Expensive

Great Tiller
This Tiller Is Far Easier to Operate Than I Thought It Would Be. Setting the Tines to Rotate in Reverse,This Tiller Just Digs Down and Creeps Along. Very Easy to Handle and Starts On the First Pull. I Have Only Used This Machine Twice But I Am Very Pleased With Its Performance.
I Looked At Several Tillers Before Buying This One and I Think I Made the Right Choice, Both For the Price and the Features.

Don't Waste Your Money
This tiller is junk. The Honda engine is great otherwise the design is poor. The ground speed is too fast and cannot be controlled except to reduce engine speed. The designer knew nothing about gardening.
The gearbox is clunky, sometimes you have to rock the tiller to get it into a gear, there is a squeal noise that happens randomly (not the belt). It seems MTD has taken over the tiller world and they are producing junk that is not worth $700. The only value on this machine is the... more
