Q: Looking at buying a vertical tine tiller. What are the pros and cons of the vertical tine. I can not find any reviews on this tiller
by Mark Smith from Iowa on March 16, 2015

A: Mark - the vertical tine technology is BRAND NEW to the market this year (2015). That's most likely why you aren't seeing any reviews yet. The big benefit of the vertical tine tillers is that they operate much more smoothly and with a lot less vibration than a traditional tiller does, so there's not near as much fatigue on the operator. The tines also seem to pulverize the soil more consistently with less "clumping". The one downside thus far seems to be that users don't feel you can till as fast as you can with a traditional tiller - the forward speed needs to be slower for the vertical tines to work most effectively.

Q: I have been looking for reviews on this machine as I am quite excited about the new design. I am wondering how thick the tine steel is.
by Jay from Tennessee on February 24, 2015

A: Jay,

The tines are 0.180" thick. The reviews should be coming in soon as we sell tillers with spring approaching.

For reference a quarter inch = 0.250" and an eighth inch = 0.125".
by Robert, Product Expert

Q: The vertical tine concept looks sensible. Is the design too new to make final determination? I want a tiller that will dig deep in relatively hard/clay soil, and also continue to do the job of cultivating throughout the growing season. Will the vertical tine deal with rocks as well as the rear tine design? Also, is Cub Cadet the only vertical tine available?
by Robert Scottum from Wisconsin on February 13, 2015

A: Robert,

This is a newly designed tiller so the reviews will be filtering in over these next couple of months. The tilling depth ranges from 1"-6.5" which you can set using the depth set pin. Standard rear tine tillers will handle rocks better than this vertical tine tiller. One tine spins clockwise and one tine spins counterclockwise. These tines meet in the middle as they spin which could make a pinch point trapping rocks where the tines meet. Right now this is the only vertical tine tiller we carry.

Where Is It?
Sitting in a Trucking Company yard -----

It's been at their yard since Friday, so we missed the only day they come up our way ---

We are promised this Thursday for a PM delivery.

You need to use a better way to ship, like with another trucking Company ----

With all the good weather we are having I should have had the ground worked up several weeks ago ---

Easy To Use
We were able to till all the areas we needed in about half the time it would have taken with a larger tiller, and ease of use was all that was stated
Pros: Easy To Use, Price, Exceeded Expectations, High Quality

Like everything about it but speed is entirely too slow when using as a cultivator. Need to have 2 speeds or at least a faster one. Like the vertical tines feature.

Shipping was quick. No problems. Would buy from Tillers Direct again but not the VT 100
Pros: Easy To Use, Quiet, Price
Cons: TOO SLOW, TOO Slow

Not For Everybody - "the Snail"
First, I have talked to the seller who said his Cub Cadet rep was willing to swap my new VT-100 out for a new 2014 R65 H. Obviously I didn't like the VT-100, but there are also some good things about it. It can be a very good tiller for some people, but I suspect not for many.

- It is very stable. It doesn't jump all over the place like the typical horizontal tine tiller. Some of that stability I'm sure is related to how slow it moves.
- Related to the stability and slowness - it's... more

We appreciate the review and are sorry about your experience you had with this tiller. With this being a new design, we do believe this would be something Cub Cadet would appreciate getting feedback on as well. You were extremely detailed in your review this should allow Cub Cadet to assess some possible problems with this machine. Cub Cadet can be reached at 1-877-282-8684 if you would like to follow up and give them a call as well.

The picture is appreciated, but has been removed due to being out of focus, it is difficult to see the shims you had placed in the unit. If you would like to resend us the picture in better focus, we would be happy to add this to the review.

Not Recommended!
This tiller is slow and I had to push it to help it along.. It would spin rather then pull the tiller along.. It tilled fine but left a very rough finish.. It has a wide plastic wheel on each side under the shield and these left ruts in the tilled soil..

I needed to rake out the garden before planting.. I took the tiller back to the store for a refund.. The tiller was ordered online, in Feb, however the store took it back in June.. That says something for customer service..

Poor Design
The other reviews are correct about the slow speed. It is stable, but crawls along. The problem I encountered was one of poor design in the transmission. If you till in roots, tall grass, or weeds, the vegetation wraps around the tine drive shafts tightly.

This cuts the shaft seals at the transmission housing, causing oil leaks. I put my unit in the shop three times for this issue. The cub cadet people were unwilling to help. I finally gave up and bought a traditional horizontal shaft... more

Stay Away
My husband purchased this tiller and discovered that it was too slow, which hurts his back because he has back problems. When I called and spoke with customer service requesting a return or an exchange I was informed that if it had been used, with gas and oil in it they could not exchange or return it. Well, how are you suppose to know how it runs and works for you if you don't use it. Don't think we will be ordering from this company again. Don't you trade in a car that has been used with oil... more

Unfortunately we're not allowed to take returns in the mail once they've been gassed. It's federal law that regulates this for safety reasons. Since you don't mail a car to the dealership, this law would not apply.

We're sorry you feel mistreated. It was never our intention to make you feel that way. Our products all have specs listed, including weight and horsepower/cc. Our return policy also states that we cannot take returns on products that have been gassed.

If it's not running properly, we suggest you contact the manufacturer to determine if it can be repaired or replaced under warranty. Any further questions, please feel free to contact us back.

Slove Hard Turn
Based on what customer refers most problem of new vertical tine, the tuning. I believe it is a easy solution by braking wheel drive shaft to 2 pieces and have clutch at each side more like mini transporter transmission. To make a wheel differential. make turn to disengage one side of wheel .
