Craftsman 88782 Reviews & Ratings
Worked well for what it is designed for

I've used this snow blower for 13 years without any major repairs at all. It works well for 6 or 7 inches of snow or less if it is light snow. If it is dense, not so much. The chute will clog. That's true of about any snowblower, especially a single stage. If the snow is heavy and dense, it has a tendency to push itself up on top of the snow as well. You have to wrestle it back down. For 80% of the snow I have, it works great! The only mechanical issue I have had is that the screws that hold the handle assembly together tend to vibrate out and get lost. Then I have to order new parts. Otherwise very reliable.
For the heavy snows, I just got a 2-stage snowblower. I will probably continue to use this one 80% of the time for the foreseeable future.

I bought Craftsman snow blower Model 31AM2T7G599-1 on Feb 16, 2019, and put gas and tried to start. Its start-up motor gave abnormal humming sound. Tried it second time - same thing. Went back to Lowe's store. They would not take it back and referred to contact Craftsman. This is a nightmare. Lesson learned: Never buy any gas operated machine from Lowe's.

I bought this machine in 10/2011, because the salesman said it would be easy for a woman to use. (I am a "senior) There was not a lot to assemble and all went well until one had to connect a "universal joint" to the "chute control." You just lined the two parts up and there was a small connecting part, which you screwed the two together with. The problem was that neither of the two "rods" came even close to one another let alone being to connect one to another. I complained to Sears and they said that their "protection plan" did not cover assembly issues. I argued that the pre-assembly had to be off and explained the problem. I got tired of arguing and gave up. A neighbor who repaired snow blowers came over and he could not even connect the two rods! I went back to sears and spoke to the Store Manager, who got a service person out to my house. He had to take the whole thing apart, because there was a problem with the pre-assembly. I used it once after he got it put together and then it would not start the next time I tried. Protection plan or not...I had enough for he winter and was tired of fighting!
I parked the new snow blower in the garage for the winter. The next year I thought it was crazy to pay that much for a blower and not be able to use it. It still would not start of course, so I had Sears out and the guy had to work on it for about a half hour adjusting this and that and said he had never seen such a dysfunctional machine! I used it a couple of times and then did not use it again. The next year (3rd winter) it would not start again and I demanded a new blower. I was told that before I could get a new sow blower, I had to receive 3 THREE service calls within the season! The snow blower has been sitting in my garage ever since and I have most likely used it 4 times max! Last year it would not start and when I was going sell it this year, I prayed a lot, but no luck. It sits nice and shiny in my garage, almost as pretty as the day I bought it.

I bought this snow blower in Sept 2014 to get ready for the winter months. I wanted a snow blower I could handle with ease (I am a woman) but that my husband wouldn't mind using, too. We have owned other snowblowers before - much larger ones - which we used when we lived in MA and Upstate NY. So we weren't sure what to expect from this smaller Craftsman snowblower.
Well, after two winters in VA including the big Blizzard we experienced in VA this year, we couldn't be happier with the performance, ease of use and durability of this product! It did a fantastic job and always started up with a couple pulls of the cord. We would highly recommend this snow blower.
Just keep in mind it is a 21" - so for instance - when we had 3' of snow from the blizzard, one of us had to knock down the snow with a shovel to lower the height of the snow wall while the other came through with the snow blower. That system worked great with really tall snow walls. Otherwise, under normal to moderately high snow levels, this machine just cranks right through with no trouble at all.

DON'T BUY IT!

Purchased this product just over one year ago. Didn't have a snowfall until the next winter. First time out of the box the snow blower fell apart. The bolts came loose and bent the frame. I exchanged it for a new one and when I took the new one out of the box it wouldn't start. I took it to a Sears store and the technician couldn't even get it started. Sears finally exchanged it for a third one. (Note: by this point I haven't even used my 'new' snow blower to clear even one snowfall.) I have now used this for the past three months. I have had to replace three skid plates and now the snow blower is cracking down the center. DON'T BUY IT!! Good luck trying to get anyone to help you at Sears. After approximately 15 phone calls and four returns to the store I have gotten nowhere.

I owned this model for a week. The first time I used it on a cold day in moderately deep snow. It seemed to perform OK. When I tried to shut it off the "key" wouldn't work. The machine just kept right on running regardless of what I did with the key. I had to use the choke to stall it out. Also the device that operates the shoot was just about worthless. The wind would blow the chute around so that I had to hold the discharge chute steady with my hand. It would not stay locked in place. I tried running it again & had the same issue with the switch. I returned it and bought a Toro.
