Drain Gas, Replace carb, Avoid Ethanol!
By Toby W.
Fairmont, West Virginia
Review Posted 09/12/2018
I purchased this Lawnmower and ran into the same problems a multitude of other people have. This phenomenon is clearly documented across YouTube the reviews on this page and multiple lawn mowing websites. The mower did not run well almost from the beginning and everyone that takes it for service gets told they have dirty gas, etc.

Ordered a new carburetor off of Amazon, drain the gas, and find the nearest boat or sporting good gas station that sells ethanol-free gas. There are websites also that direct you to where to buy ethanol-free gas. I also took the added step of adding a five dollar quarter inch gas line filter I bought at AutoZone. The mower now starts on the first pull and I have not had any issues since I switched to this method. Apparently, the ethanol quickly degrades rubber and plastic, which easily clogs the carburetor. Also, the gas cap design is poor (as well as discontinued!), and grass tends to accumulate around there so wipe it off carefully and avoid getting grass in the tank. I am hoping the fuel filter I added which is clear, will take care of this issue. When I drained the gas there was debris in the bottom of the gas tank.

There are a lot of people that go back-and-forth about the ethanol issue online, but I am solid of the camp that is destroying small engines. People blame the manufacturers and think the quality is going downhill but it’s the ethanol. I have been doing a lot of one line and personal research with people that use small engines every day. The general consensus is we all ran machines for years and years without any problems and in the last few years the machines have become hard to start, and many have quit running altogether. I have yet to talk to anyone who has switched to ethanol-three gas after clearing or replacing the fuel system, that is still having these problems. I would say that the government forcing people to use ethanol has greatly increased the number of machines that have gone into the landfill needlessly. Just my two cents. Good luck. I am mowing like the old days!

I bought this mower in 2015, a self-propelled Craftsman with a Briggs and Stratton engine and still under a two-year warranty. It works well when it works, but in the first two years I've had to take it in for repair twice. The first time, when it wouldn't start, I took it to a nearby hardware store, who found a part was broken but said Sears would not pay for it under the warranty, so I had to pay, and they made it seem like it was my fault. After that it worked okay for awhile, but then it wouldn't start again- this time it made a loose rattling sound when I'd pull the starting cord. This time the hardware store told me that that type of problem is not covered under the warranty. So I called Sears customer service and had an agonizing shuffle through several persons with hard-to-understand foreign accents, each of whom told me that the next one to whom they transferred my call would be the one to help me.

Bottom line is that I learned that the local Sears stores had just stopped taking machines in for shipment to the area service center, so I had to take it there myself, about 20+ miles away from me in a neighboring state. Once there, I was told that they have a backlog of repairs and that it would be several weeks before they got to it. So that's how it stands now- I'm without a mower, waiting to hear back from them to see if it will be repaired under the warranty.

Sears is going down the tubes, unfortunately, and it does not seem wise now to buy one of their products.

I bought this model 4 years ago. At the end of last season, the piston came out of the side of the head....Kabaaammmm! I had a previous Craftsman mower which I used for 23 years.....and never changed the oil in it.....go figure. I need a new mower, but definitely will not get another Craftsman.

I got one brand spankin new. When I start it, it blows smoke out and there is no oil in the gas. I didn't want to give it a one star rating, but I had to do it so I could submit my review. It doesn't deserve even a one star rating.

Service Center LIES: Must be using dirty gas...
By Justin A.

crap mower. Something wrong from the manufacturer with this carburetor or something. Three times the service center within the first year says it wont start cause I used dirty gas. They never even took the carb. apart to clean or inspect. Now I see all these other reviews with the same thing. BULL CRAP. This whole model is a lemon. I finally took it back a fourth time at the beginning of this season due to same issue and demanded my money back or else.

I got on Facebook and twitter and lit Sears up like a Christmas Tree with bad comments and reviews. Finally, a manager contacted me. They sent my mower to have the carb. rebuilt and cleaned. They also offered me a new display mower off the floor, no questions, no guarantee, no paperwork, said "you didn't get this from me" kinda deal.

I also got my old mower back from the rebuild and it has worked every time this season since then. HMMMM. Maybe it was a bad carburetor. Ya Think. Come on Sears. Come on Craftsman. Where did your quality and customer service go.

The blade adapter, believe it or not keeps breaking. Two so far have broke. The tits on them shear off without even hit anything hard. I've tried using a bolt with fiber washer as Sears suggested. Hey, worked a couple of cuttings. After that, total frustration. Junk. Do not buy this mower. You have been warned.

Simple but effective

This is no Cadillac of mowers rather it is more along the lines of a entry level economy car. There aren't a lot of features, no blade stop, no electric start, you have to adjust the height at all 4 wheels...But what it does have it does well enough.
Deck washout port, discharge, mulch or bag. Fwd self propel works good and at less then 300$ it's a good value. This year I will find out how durable it is.

I had this mower for about a year and I took it back once already about 6 months ago. It has never started right the whole time I had it. I took it back to Sears and they try to make up stuff like I'm using old gas etc. I hate it. Now it does not work at all and I don't want to take it back. I will just by a new one. I owned a Craftsman mower before and had no problems with it. This particular mower has been a nightmare.

I bought this mower because it was a Craftsman and was made in the USA. It worked for one month and then could not maintain power and eventually kept stalling. During the first Summer, it was in the service center four times and I was told it was dirty, it used the worng gas, and that they could find nothing wrong with it. The last cut of the season it ran and this Spring it ran well again twice. then it started doing the exact same thing. I paid $150 for a complete rebuild after being told I must have used bad gas. It worked for two custs and started losing power and stalled. It is headed for a landfill and I will not use Sears mower products again. It was a model 370410, Serial # 013112M008761. No one can find out what is wrong with it and the Service centers are inconviently located to discourage people taking them for repair. I was a loyal Sears customer but I guess all companies eventually decline.
