I opened the box to my new cp7740 and I was very surprised with the build quality of the impact. The grip is a little small but has a nice shape to it and the impact is amazingly light and the weight is well balanced over the grip. The finish on the impact looks great but does not wear well and I had several scratches within the first few minutes of use.
The performance of the gun was another story. I oiled the gun fired up the garage compressor and attempted to remove the lug nuts on my Cummins 3500. To my amazement at 90psi the gun could not crack them loose. I continued to use the impact on several other front end bolts all under 90ftlbs and the gun had no trouble removing them. The next day after a good amount break in on other fasteners I took the impact and hooked it up to the shop air and tried again on the lug nuts. Again the impact failed to remove the lug nuts within the first few seconds. So I sat there and gave the gun short controlled bursts. After about 2 minutes I was able to crack a single lug nut loose. I threaded it back on and hit it with the impact and to test the torque I pulled out the lug wrench and I was not surprised to see that it could be easily removed.
I'm not sure whether I got a bad impact or if this impact just doesn't live up to the hype. While I have had success with CP in the past I don't think I will be buying more of their products anytime soon.
ACD RESPONDS: You may want to give the folks at Chicago Pneumatic a call, toll free at (877) 861-2722, about warranty service for your impact wrench.

Speedy help

I love my Campbell Hausefeld air compressor and 12" impact wrench...
I have to rotate my tires every 1,000 miles because they are low profile, 22" diameter, and very expensive.
It is usually a long and tiresome operation to rotate all 4 wheels every 4 weeks or so. With my impact wrench and compressor, I have been able to rotate all wheels with 5 lug nuts in just about under 25 minutes. (It used to take me an hour and a half or more to get the job done.)
This has given me a lot more time to build tables and chairs that I donate to a few local Boys and Girls clubs here in the Bay Area region.
I just can't thank my new tools enough for the fast and speedy help that they give me every 4 weeks.
