What are the full dimensions of this check valve, with and without the rubber unions? What is the outside diameter of the two connection points?

Answer
Thank you for your interest in Sump Pumps Direct.
The Camis check valve dimensions that you requested are:

Total Length including Rubber Unions: 11-1/4"
Total Length without Rubber Unions: 6-1/2"
Diameter with Rubber Unions: 2-1/8"
Diameter without Rubber Unions: 1-7/8"

Reading through one of the previous Q&As, you wrote that the check valve is generally installed about 1/2 - 2/3 up the vertical section of the discharge line (assuming 5'-10' vertical section). Why so high? I've seen a few installations where the check valve is right near the base of the line. Don't know which way is better.

Thank you for your interest in Sump Pumps Direct. While either installation is feasible and will work, my suggestion will reduce stress on the pump when starting due the the extra weight of the water sitting on top of that check valve when it's located at the pump discharge port. In addition, it makes for an easier access point for any servicing that may be needed on your system.

can this be installed vertically and horizontally? Thanks

Thank you for your interest in Sump Pumps Direct. The Camis check valves can only be installed in a vertical position.

I have a 11/4 flexible discharge line from sump to drain only about 10 feet long do I still need a check valve?

Answer
The purpose of the check valve is to keep any water that's inside that discharge or drain line, from returning to the sump basin once the pump shuts off. Typically, you will have a PVC discharge pipe connected to your sump pump that will extend vertically, usually anywhere from 5'-10' and then attach a 90 degree elbow to extend the run to your back yard or municipal drainage system. The check valve is generally installed on that vertical section about 1/2 - 2/3 up from the pump. It would really be your decision weather you think you may need one in your personal application but they can help avoid rapid or continuous cycling of the pump.

what does the check valve do for a sump pump and do I need one if Im buying a sump pump?

Answer
You definitely want to install a check valve along with your sump pump. The check valve will keep most of the water left in your discharge pipe from returning and emptying back into your sump basin once your pump shuts off, thereby preventing any rapid re-cycling or continuous cycling of your pump.
