I want to add a battery back up system for my sump pump. Although the pump seldom runs it is about 18 years old. What is the life span of a sump pump?
Perry Crume
from Kansas
July 02, 2016
Answer
Perry,

Primary pumps have a lifespan between 3-10 years usually. They can go 20+ depending on the cycles and what type of water that is running through it.

In order to size a backup properly, I will need a few pieces of infomration first.

What size basin is the pump going in ?

How high vertically and how far horizontally are you pumping?

I've owned and used Basement Watchdog battery backup systems for a long time and they have always performed very well for me but I see all these new systems with notification, self-testing and other nice features that would be great to have in a lower cost system. Will they ever improve or upgrade this system?

Answer
Thank you for your interest in Sump Pumps Direct. And funny you should ask, Simon! Basement Watchdog has recently updated the controller in the BWSP. The newly updated system has been on the shelves and in circulation for about a year now. According to Basement Watchdog, the updated controller has proven its reliability, having sold over 10,000 systems - with only 5 defective units to date.

While this new controller has some similarities to our previous one, some significant hardware and software changes have been made. Those changes include:

• Remote Notification - We have added in terminals which allow for remote notification. This system is now able to communicate with an Auto Dialer, Home Security System or other device, to alert home owners to problems or required maintenance

• AGM Compatible - The most popular revision allows the customer to utilize wet cell, or AGM maintenance free batteries

• Improved Charging System – Improved battery monitoring and charging system

• Weekly Pump Activation – The system will run the pump for a few seconds every week to not only test the pump but to also exercise it which will help prolong the life of the pump

If i was to buy a watchdog combo unit and the main pump goes bad, do I need to replace the entire unit or can I replace just the 1 unit
Vance
from Michigan

Answer
All of the Basement Watchdog combo system pumps can be changed out easily. The primary pump for the 1/3HP system is the model BW1033 and for the 1/2HP system, is model BW1050.

I'm considering the Basement Watchdog SPD-BDKIT for $675. I see what appears to be the same pump (BWD12120C), without battery, for $479. So I figure the battery and acid must be about $200. I see the battery (30HDC140S) for $140 and the same battery with acid (SPD-WDBATTERYACID) for $250. Does that mean you're charging $110 for the acid? In one of the Q&A's, you say auto parts stores should have the acid for about $20. OK, what am I missing?

Answer
Everything that you see is true. Due to the corrosive and hazardous nature of shipping the acid, the cost is elevated. We sell the kit as convenience to those customers that want everything delivered to their door at the same time and we also offer the other options for those that don't mind making a separate trip for the acid to save a few dollars. And yes, most auto parts and big box stores should have the acid available for about $20. You do want to look for 1.265 specific gravity battery acid and it will come in a 6 quart box.

If the backup pump is activated due to heavy water flow (to help the main pump) and the AC power stays on, will the system keep charging the battery to allow the backup pump to keep running indefinitely?
Scott Mueller
from Connecticut
January 24, 2012
Answer
Yes, the controller will keep the battery charging and the pump running indefinitely if needed. This is true for the Basement Watchdog model BWE and the BWSP stand alone battery backup systems as well.

Hi Jim: Can I hook this up to an existing 1-1/4" discharge?
Jonathan
from Massachusetts
November 14, 2011
Answer
The Basement Watchdog model SPD-BWSPKIT is designed to be installed as a backup pump and can be configured to "sit" above or next to your primary pump. While it's ok to pipe the discharge from the backup pump into the discharge from your primary pump, it is advisable to install a seperate discharge for each pump to maximize the total pumping capacity of each pump.

Do I need to leave my battery backup system charging at all times?
Patrick Mcclone

Answer
To be completely sure your backup system is fully functional during a power outage or weather event, these systems need to stay plugged in at all times.

If I buy a Basement Watchdog pump do I need a Basement Watchdog battery?
Karen
from Illinois
January 03, 2011
Answer
You can use any deep cycle marine battery, as long as it is not maintenance-free. However, there are several advantages to using a Basement Watchdog battery. The Watchdog battery accommodates the system’s fluid sensor which will sound an alarm when the battery needs water…a very important feature, since a dry battery will not perform. In addition, Basement Watchdog batteries run longer per charge, and last years longer. A typical marine battery will last 2-4 years, while the Watchdog battery will last approximately 5-7 years. Basement Watchdog batteries are shipped dry (without acid) so they stay fresh on the shelf indefinitely, while wet batteries have a short shelf life.

Update 11/16/15: Basement Watchdog has changed this requirement around 2013 and their backup systems will now accept maintenance free batteries. Please refer to their updated installation manual for instructions on the proper method for this battery installation.

What kind of battery comes with it?
Jerry Whalen
from New Jersey

Answer
That kit comes with the Basement Watchdog Battery Model 30HDC140S (and acid) which will give the pump up to 7.5 hours of run time.
