Q: I have a customer running propane on a Yamaha genset. While burning propane the engine burns excessive oil, not a problem on gasoline. Any ideas?
by Shane Bland from Florida on June 24, 2014

A: The Yamaha portable generators are engineered and warranted to operate on gasoline only. The reason your customer is burning through oil is due to the excessive temperatures of the unit.

Gasoline burns at 485 degrees F whereas propane burns at 1008 degrees F which will cause excessive heat within the engine in turn burning off the engine oil.

Q: Can a GFI outlet from a generator be connected to a transfer switch?
by Vito L. from New York on January 24, 2014

A: Thanks for your inquiry.

You will need to go with a GFI type transfer switch if you use the GFI protected outlet on the generator. This will only apply to the outlet listed below since this is the only GFI protected outlet on this particular generator. Keep in mind that this outlet is not usually used to hook up to a transfer switch.

In order to get the full power from this generator you will want to use the 30-amp 3-prong outlet which is NOT GFI protected and can be used with a standard 120 volt only transfer switch.

When using the outlet that is shown above, we recommend the following items:

Reliance Controls 30114A

APC 32316-UTS6H Indoor Transfer Switch

Reliance Controls Inlet Box (PB31)

Reliance Controls Power Cord (PC3110)

Q: My EF2800i won't start. The plug boot and oil were replaced. I checked the fuel, cleaned the carburetor and air filter and it still does not start. Any suggestions?

by Jamie Doherty on May 11, 2011

A: Since you have performed all the basic customer checks the best thing to do would be to take the unit to a certified Yamaha service center. You can find one from the link below.

Yamaha 2800 Inverter Generator
This is a quality machine not a box store disposable generator you get what you pay for. Starts easily with minimum pull effort on the first or second pull purchased the hr meter along with it noise level is quite acceptable for an open frame machine at 69 pounds is quite easily moved with casters or wheels of choice the eco mode cuts down the noise level & fuel economy. Runs my 12000btu portable ac easily.

Manufacturer Response
Brand Rep
Gioverti,
Were happy you like the EF2800 watt Yamaha generator. This is one powerful compact generator with Eco Mode (engine speed drops down when power isn't needed to conserve fuel and becomes very quiet, 14.7 hours of run time on 1/4 load, GFCI 120V outlet, fuel gauge and more. With the open frame design its give you the versatility of using it camping, home back up, JOB SITE, cabin and more. What's really nice, its adjust engine speed to match voltage draw. So, its not like the box store units which go from low rpm to high rpm. Don't forget - Yamaha has the longest EPA rating (500 hours) on their generators in the industry.

Exactly What I Need
I love this generator. OK, it isn't as pretty and quiet as the other Yamaha inverter generators, but it is quiet enough and I don't need it to be pretty.
I use this generator to work on my 46' sailboat in the winter when it is hauled out and on jacks in the yard, The marine shore power cable plugs directly into the unit's L5-30R (30Amp 120 VAC) outlet.
This allows me to run the ship's battery charger and via the ship's AC system it provides me with enough power to also run a 1500W... more

Good Generator, But Won't Run Rv Ac Unit
I did a lot of research for generators. I saw the Yamaha 2800, and for the price, weight, features, I thought this could be it. I called Yamaha, looked at their spec sheet, and it stated that the generator should start a 13,500 BTU ac unit (per specs). I have a 2013 prowler Rev with a Coleman mach ac unit. I bought the generator, and it started right up. It was easy to use and lightweight. The big test. I hooked it up to my Rev and failure. It would not provide enough power to start the AC.... more
Pros: Durable, Easy To Use, Price, Easy To Store
Cons: Doesn't Meet Some Specs

Mike, the Generator Expert
Product Expert
David,
RV AC units can be a little tricky when sizing the correct generator for the job. We always suggest verifying that the generator will be compatible. The RV manufacturer, dealer or AC manufacturer should be able to provide this information to you. If you think that the issue maybe be the generator itself (not providing the rated output), you may want to contact Yamaha directly @ (800) 962-7926 or click here for a local Yamaha Service Center.

Yamaha 2800i
I owned a Yamaha 3000IS to run my 26' RV. The problem was it was to heavy for one person. I just purchased the Yamaha 2800IM which weighs only 70lbs and is very easy for 1 person to load and unload. I hooked it up, turned on my A/C and television and ran like a charm. I would recommend it.
Pros: Easy To Store, Easy To Use, Light Weight, Reliable

Quality But Altitude Challanged
The Generators Direct website was excellent and easy to order from and the generator was delivered right on time. The generator itself has high quality components. No complaints there. When we used it at an elevation of 9200 feet it ran so rich it fouled the plug and clogged the spark arrestor. We took it in for a $130 service and it is still way too rich and back in the shop.

We have used and still use two Generacs for years at this and much higher elevations (up to 12000 feet) with no... more

Best All Around Generator
This is my second one of these. The first one I bought in 2003. (nothing happened to it, I wanted another one to put in a different location) I have never pulled the cord on it more than 3 times to start. This new one started on one pull. I was a bit surprised given that it had not been run. (I'm sure they probably start them at Yamaha) If you can afford it it's the best all around generator assuming it's enough wattage.

Some of the reasons I like it are it's only about 75 lbs even... more
