Q: Can you comment on some of the reviews that say that additional parts, supplies and configuration is required to use it on non-gasoline fuels? Or is it ready for tri-fuel out of the box?
by JP from Massachusetts on October 19, 2012

A: The unit is ready to go out of the box but the items needed would be the connection fittings to your fuel source which is not supplied by the generator manufacturer. You must also make sure you have the proper fuel pressure at the generator to make sure it will start and run properly.

With that said, yes you would need to make sure you have the proper connections and proper tanks and fuel pressure to get the unit running.

We do offer the owner's manual on the site for your review so you can make sure you are ready to go before you get the unit.

Q: Will this generator (HPS12000HE) deliver full rated power while operating on Propane?
by Joseph Smith from New York on January 21, 2012

A: Per page 3 of the owner's manual you would Derate 10% for LP and 20% for NG.

This is true on all Winco Tri-Fuel models.

Q: What is the LP gas line in pressure required to run this generator.
by Joseph Smith from New York on January 21, 2012

A: Correct fuel pressure cannot be stressed enough. The most common cause or inoperative systems is an inadequate or incorrect fuel pressure.

Power and performance of the engine is in direct relation to the correctness of the fuel system.

There are several fuel delivery systems mentioned in the owner's manual and should be referred to when connecting system.

Whichever fuel delivery system or type of vapor fuel used, the fuel pressure at the demand regulator installed on the engine generator must be between 4 and 6 oz. (7-11 inches of water column). Any lower pressure and the unit will starve for fuel under load. Any higher and the unit will ‘flood’ when attempting to start.

There is some very important LP tank sizing requirements in the owner's manual which needs to be reviewed.

Q: Will the Winco Tri-fuel generator work with small propane tanks like a gas grill uses, and can you use quick connect hose.
by Dennis Fry from Michigan on February 26, 2011

A: Yes, you can use the 20# (Approx - 5gal) LP tanks with the small portable generators, just keep in mind that the run time may be low due to fuel amount. Using quick-connect connectors would be based on your city, county and state codes.

From The Manufacturer
Hps6000he Package
The HPS6000HE is EPA certified to run on natural gas and gasoline only. WINCO understands the need for reliable power, which is why we have equipped this generator with a Honda GX340 commercial grade engine. The HPS6000HE also features a 7 gallon fuel tank, full receptacle package with circuit breaker protection, 100% copper windings and has less than 6% total harmonic distortion which is safe for sensitive loads. Things I Wish I'd Known
Don't plan on running this on propane or NG out of the box! You will need about $150 in parts plus the $35 battery to get it working-I had read from others how vague the instructions were and now I understand. The Winco Support tech informed me that I need the following items to make it work.

Low pressure Regulator with a 7-11 water pressure rating
Corrugated steel tubing for gas in a 34" size
Flexible gas tubing in a 34" size
34 " natural gas pipe nipple

Be warned the... more

I ordered this generator with the kit (dolly wheels, cover, manual transfer switch, & solenoid shut off valve). I ordered it Oct. 12 2011 and it was backordered; it arrived about the last week of Jan. 2012.

I assembled and installed it 3 month after it arrived. I started running it on LPG and it runs great. I connected it to LNG for assurance of a continuous fuel supply. Then I wired it to the house grid using the manual transfer switch to reduce risk from using extension cords.

Initially Very Disappointed
We ordered the PSS6H because it appeared to have all that was needed in a completed kit.

It should be noted that the generator is shipped without oil or a starting battery. The wheel kit is difficult to assemble (Part 10 must be POUNDED into the handle! Common Winco! A very expensive piece of precision machinery with parts that must be pounded in. As previously stated, the shipping brackets are difficult to remove, and the bolt on the engine side is difficult to reinstall because of the... more

Winco Pss6h - 5500 Watt Dual Fuel Power System W/ Electric Start Honda Engine Review
I'm very impressed with this unit.

We have it wired to the house on a manual switch, but also have a 4-way cable for it in case of other need.

We've had it for a year, and it still starts first time, even when cold. Electric start is a dream, and useful to have cord-pull backup.

Great power/economy balance.

Very solidly built. Great documentation.

This is a quality unit.

Great value for money - you get all the hook-up gear, mobility kit, cover, low-pressure kit for great... more

Could Use Better Instructions
I think that the generator will perform as designed. the delivery was as promised. My only problem has been with the instruction manual. Without the help of Customer Service I would never have been able to get the generator running.

Specifics: I had a difficult time removing the shipping brackets- there must be an easier way to remove them than the one I used.

The installation of the inserts on the handles should be easier. Without a vise to hold the handles, I found it difficult to... more

Your property is at stake- if you don't have the skills needed to install the unit, consulting a professional is a wise course of action. Many areas have laws that require installation be done by a licensed electrician and/or plumber; or your insurance may require it.

We publish a lot of helpful information on our web site, but we need to be aware of, and tread carefully around, liability issues- as do all the major manufacturers. This influences how much novice instruction you see online.

The Owner's Manual says, on page 6 about changing from gasoline to LP or Natural Gas:

"6. Units have two different hose fittings on the top of
the demand requlator. One is for LP and one is for
Natural Gas. Make sure the hose is attached to the
proper fitting."

Since the fittings are physically different, the manufacturer may have felt color coding was not necessary. The cover is flexible and can be tucked behind the wheels if need be.

We include the Owner's Manual and Installation Specs whenever they are available- you can find the links on the "Specs" page, on the right hand side. And, Winco Technical Support can be reached at (507) 357-6831.
