Q: What type/size battery is recommended for this generator?

by Lou from New York on September 09, 2013

A: The recommended battery per the owner's manual - Group 20 or 24HL 300CCA (Cold Cranking Amps)

by Mike, Product Expert
Q: Jim,
What else would I need beside a manual transfer switch to hook up the Winco HPS6000HE to my 200A service to my house.

by Curt Geigle from Wisconsin on March 05, 2013

A: The main items required to properly connect a generator to an electrical panel would be the transfer switch, power inlet box (outside receptacle) and the power cord.

by Mike, Product Expert
Q: Jim,
Can the Winco HP6000HE-5500 Watt TriFuel generator be hooked up to a small 2000 sq ft. house and supply it with enough power to run basic appliances and lights with out damaging the unit or the house.

by Curt Geigle from Wisconsin on March 05, 2013

A: You can run the basics with a 5500 watt generator. This should be enough to run a refrigerator, sump pump and some lights without overloading the unit. The best way is to use a manual transfer switch and then manage the loads as needed. This load management can take a little trial and error to get exactly what you want running at the same time but with proper management it can be done.

by Mike, Product Expert
Q: I want to run my hps6000he tri fuel on a small propane btl like the kind for a gas grill...so can i just use the same kind of hose like the kind on gas grills with the normal regulator on it or can i just use a black hose without the regulator on it? Doesn't this generator already have a built in regulator for lp? thank you
by Tim Gilmore from Texas on October 20, 2012

A: These units "cannot" be used with a 5 gallon (20#) propane tank.

Here are the tank requirements from the owner's manual which are based on temperature (Found on Page 7)...

HPS6000HE

60 Deg. F - 40 gal.
30 Deg. F - 50 gal.
0 Deg. F - 125 gal.
-20 Deg. F - 350 gal.

by Mike, Product Expert
Q: Is there some kind of shutoff or check valve of sorts when using propane or NG to prevent leaking if the generator shuts off because of low oil?

by R DeFrancesco from New York on September 27, 2012

A: Winco offers their Emergency Fuel Solenoid Shut-Off for their Tri-Fuel generators....here's the link...

Winco 64854 Emergency Shut-Off

by Mike, Product Expert
Q: Interested in a tri-fuel generator. NG spec 160ft/ hr. I have a half inch line off my main manifold to the backporch for a gas grill. Should that provide adequate flow?

by David Distel from Minnesota on September 16, 2012

A: Length of Fuel Line* -Fuel Line Size

Less than 25 feet -3/4 inch black pipe
25 to 100 feet -1 inch black pipe
Over 100 feet -not recommended**

by Mike, Product Expert
Q: I have 200A service. I am considering the winco 5500 watt as back-up for my house. Are components available that would allow me, in a power outage, to trip the main 200A breaker, then all the individual breakers, plug the generator into my main service box, ramp up the generator, then re-set essential circuit breakers, keeping within the 80% max start up load on the generator? If so, What components would I need, beside the obvious?
by Thom from Arizona on July 27, 2012

A: The best option for whole house set-up with a portable generator is model TWB2005DR which is a 200A rated whole house manual transfer switch allowing you to manage your existing circuits.

Reliance Controls TWB2005DR

by Mike, Product Expert
Q: Will this generator (HPS12000HE) deliver full rated power while operating on Propane?
by Joseph Smith from New York on January 21, 2012

A: Per page 3 of the owner's manual you would Derate 10% for LP and 20% for NG.

This is true on all Winco Tri-Fuel models.

Owner's Manual

by Mike, Product Expert
Q: What is the LP gas line in pressure required to run this generator.
by Joseph Smith from New York on January 21, 2012

A: Correct fuel pressure cannot be stressed enough. The most common cause or inoperative systems is an inadequate or incorrect fuel pressure.

Power and performance of the engine is in direct relation to the correctness of the fuel system.

There are several fuel delivery systems mentioned in the owner's manual and should be referred to when connecting system.

Whichever fuel delivery system or type of vapor fuel used, the fuel pressure at the demand regulator installed on the engine generator must be between 4 and 6 oz. (7-11 inches of water column). Any lower pressure and the unit will starve for fuel under load. Any higher and the unit will ‘flood’ when attempting to start.

There is some very important LP tank sizing requirements in the owner's manual which needs to be reviewed.

Owner's Manual

by Mike, Product Expert
Q: Seriously considering buying the Winco 5500 Watt TriFuel generator for emergency backup. Does this model have overload protection, or is it necessary? Can you damage your generator by overloading it w/ too many watts? Please explain how this works and if it is something I really should consider in buying a generator. Thanks.
by Jim from Utah on January 21, 2011

A: Self-excited generators respond to severe overloading differently than the power line. When overloaded, the engine is not able to supply enough power to bring the
electric motor up to operating speed. The generator responds with high initial starting current, but the engine speed drops sharply. The overload may stall the engine. If allowed to operate at very low speeds, the electric motor starting winding will burn out in a short time. The generator winding might also be damaged.

CAUTION: EQUIPMENT DAMAGE
RUNNING THE GENERATOR SET UNDER THESE CONDITIONS MAY RESULT IN DAMAGING THE GENERATOR STATOR AS WELL AS THE MOTOR WINDING.

It is always best to consider the items you are planning on powering and calculate their starting amperage loads to find out the wattage need at start-up. It is best to size a generator to 80% of its running capacity to help prevent overload, voltage drop and damage to the unit.

Quality Control Problems...
I was super excited about purchasing a dual-fuel generator (NG + Gasoline), especially after experiencing fuel supply issues last fall with super storm Sandy. My house has a properly installed transfer box, as well as a brand new NG supply line, especially installed for this unit. All up to code. Don't do a backfeed or modify your genny with an aftermarket conversion kit, you will void your warranty, and you are putting your home and loved ones at risk. Get a unit like this one, that is... more

Follow Up From March...big Nasty Fall Snowstorm/power Outage
Well...I wrote back in March that I Loved this gen/set, but had never had to use it much. Well, we got hit here in CT a Big Wallop over Halloween weekend. 750k folks w/o power, some for a week and more. 16 inches of tree bustin wet snow...BAM !!..Had just changed the oil on the Winco. Limbs down all around, cut my way out of the driveway 400 feet.

But FIRST...Started the Winco and was worry-free. Funny thing, just last month I had thought to myself "Will this thing EVER get used... more

Purchased this generator 3 years ago. I have it wired to a transfer switch. It has more than exceeded my expectations. Installed a ghost trickle charge and after using a gas model for about 20 years the lp gas operation is great. The area I live in has many ice storms and snow fall so I use it quite often. A great product and has made my life a lot easier.

Good Thing We Had The Generator
We bought the Winco Tri Fuel generator two years ago, broke it in and stored it in the garage for two years. Then we had a major power outage and needed to power some lights, two refrigerators, and most importantly our marine-battery backup sump pump. We pulled the generator out and it started right up and saved the day (and nights). Good investment for peace of mind. Plan to hook it up to natural gas.

I am pleased I chose EGD to purchase the generator and necessary switchgear I needed . Everything went flawlessly & being the generator was on three month backorder, no advance billing to my CC by EGD.

Being a mechanical tradesman, I was able to properly install and wire the 10 circuit Reliance transfer switch, remote PIB and NG connection myself while waiting for the generator to come off backorder. I did check & verify my NG pressure and pipe sizing before placing the order. I do... more
