Machine is exactly as described. Works great.I have been actually used this machine for 30 years, I just needed a new one, as the one I used belonged to a friend who now lives 50 miles away, so I purchased one of my own.All other units are "Mickey Mouse" and don't last very long.If you are serious about gardening, this is the only unit to buy.

Unhappy!
2 red battery cables?? Decals are either bubbled or not completely put on, paint is not perfect either.

The gear keeps "popping out" that I have to remove the tiller assembly and reconnect the "engagement" device into the "dog".

No, not happy at all. :( :(
Cons: Expensive, Low Quality, Unreliable

The Big Red Disappointment
My new $2,500.00 tiller came in perfect shape on the outside, but not 20 minutes into using it the tines quit turning, so took it apart and found a bunch of rusty metal filings and a small piece of threaded metal that was what should have been holding the clutch.

So I went to the Troy website and found out the socket head bolt was a common size, I bought a new bolt and installed then the lever that is to hold it in or out was not indexed to do either position so I have been using a rubber... more

Nice Tiller, Although Some Improvements Detract From Functionali
I purchased a horse model with the 6 HP Tecumseh engine in 1979. After that engine wore out I upgraded to an 8 HP Kohler engine, which after about 20 years is still going strong.

This year I lost gear oil while tilling and damaged the brass worm gear in the rear, which prompted me to purchased the new model.

Nice features on the new model include the ability to disengage the tines while still engaging the wheels and the electric start on the engine. The engine has adequate power,... more

Indestructible
I beat on this thing, I hit rocks, it fell off my tow trailer, I get it snagged in tree roots and it keeps working...although i had to replace the motor once because i wasn't checking the oil levels after 10 years of abuse. This roto-tiller is one tough unit.

Just one suggestion, buy tubes for the tires. I never liked tubeless tires because they are always flat in spring from sitting in the shed all winter.

You cant kill this thing.

Starts Easy - Tills Up Anything
Electric start and battery make this easy to garden work started. Multiple speeds add versatility over the Pony. I also have a Pony. The Pony is smaller and better for cultivation between rows as the garden plants mature. The Horse is what I needed to get the garden broken up in the spring and fall. Also, I read in the manual that the Horse will take down green corn stalks. I've been slaving away with a corn knife chopping up stalks of corn so the Pony can handle it. The Horse will take... more

Poor Quality
I owned a Troybilt horse tiller that dated from the early 1980s. I bought it used and ran it hard for 15 years with about 2500 square feet of garden...and not the best soil. After 30 years of use it was getting worn out, so when the engine died last year I bought a new one. I am VERY disappointed in the quality!

The control knobs are just held on with crimped metal rings and the knob comes off in your hand if you pull on it. I have to constantly tinker with the belt tension, half the... more

Still Tilling After All These Years
My Troy-Bilt Horse is a former U-Haul rental unit, put into service in the early 1970's as best I can tell. The only things I've repaired or replaced on the thing are a spring, the tines (which had worn down), and the metal gas tank. This year I'll rebuild the carburetor. Although it doesn't get constant use, I'd say over 40 years of reliably starting and working says quite a bit about the Horse's design and build quality.

To Alice M.of Chestertown, MD who asked (two years ago) about the... more

Setting Up
Tiller works great but instructions on unpacking are a little vague. Parts to compete assembly are there, but they are not shown in a picture diagram with a number to associate parts with diagram of how to assemble like other devices I have put together. Took a little more thinking and trial error to get assembled.

Proud Owner Of A New Rototiller
The tiller is great except for one thing- I never received a dip stick to check the oil level. There are two plastic plugs in the oil tank, and I think that one of them should be a dip stick. Right or Wrong?

TD RESPONDS: We checked the Owner's Manual and didn't see a specific reference either way. Please contact Troy-bilt Tech Support directly, toll free, at (800) 828-5500. Be sure to have the serial number of your tiller handy so they can look up the correct version of your model.

Absolutely Necessary For A Large Garden.
I bought my first one 35 years ago. I would still be using it but it is a pull start and I recently had major surgery on my right shoulder. The old one is in excellent shape and runs perfect. Just put a new set of hardened tines on it. This one, with an electric start, is perfect. It even has an engage and disengage option for the tines. The rest is practically the same.
Pros: Durable, High Quality, Reliable, I'd Buy It Again

Big Red
I purchased a Troy-Bilt Horse in 1982 and just retired it this year. The tiller would start first pull 33 years later. I am very pleased with Big Red and anticipate it will perform like its predecessor. Awesome machine!
