My John Deere
I chose my John Deere because of the reputation. I got the d105 because I have about an acre to mow once a week. I've had no problems from it mechanically, but must say the hose adapter/clean out feature is useless. I still have to raise the mower and hand clean the deck after mowing. Overall, I am pleased with my choice.
Pros: Durable, Easy To Use, High Quality, I'd Buy It Again
Cons: Expensive

Defective Product, Poor Customer Service
Transmission stuck in reverse with only 31.4 hours on it. John Deere would not cover it because it was one month out of the warranty period.

Look at the reviews, (I wish I had) this is a well known problem and they continue to sell them. Cost me over $400.00 to repair.

John Deere D105
Transmission locked up wont come out of reverse. I bought the bags and the grass just gets clogged in the chute. Worse lawn tractor I ever had will never buy John Deere again.

Very Poorly Designed
Clutch grabs so hard, mower's front wheels practically lift off the ground. You better hang on when operating this mower. Local dealer in Greer, S.C., says it is designed this way and he cannot fix it!!! My next mower won't be a John Deere...

Horrible Customer Service
I have had mine for four months and the belt keeps slipping. And then it just snapped. It's still under warranty and now they say the belt isn't and I have to bring it to get diagnosed. What?! And I have to pay for that only to see if I have misused it! Wow never again. This is horrible customer service and I have never been treated this way and never had a lawn mower I have paid so much for be so crappy.

"stuck In Reverse"
Bought my D105 just over 2 years ago, only have 80 hours on it. Transmission is stuck in reverse. Dealer said "sorry it's out of warranty" Should have bought another craftsman.

The Last John Deere For Me
I was an avid fan of John Deere until I bought this tractor a few years back. It was constantly in the shop with a problem of not wanting to start after heating up. The John Deere authorized service rep could never find the problem and kept charging me for unrelated repairs.

Finally a neighbor of mine discovered the problem, the fuel line is built too close to the engine, and when it heats up, it causes vapor locks. When I tried to get JD Customer Service (a joke) to repair this, they... more

No Problems
Well I have had my D105 for 3 yrs and got a smoking deal on it from Lowe's. Someone bought it and returned it with less than 2 hrs. on the meter.

It does a great job on the lawn and pulled out some large bushes as well. I maintain it when ever the maintenance indicator comes on. Then tear it down completely every year and clean it all up sharpen blades and lube everything while changing filters.
Pros: Durable, Easy To Use, Reliable, I'd Buy It Again
Cons: small problems are my own fault

Nice Mower!
Have this mower with the manual transmission. It has been very reliable with over 160 hours on it. The deck works great, cuts very nicely without bogging down. Great power and nice, tight steering.

The only downside of this model is a grabby clutch engagement and notchy shifter, which the hydrostatic version would not have. However, I like the extra speed that the manual transmission has over the hydro version. These are nice mowers at a good price, however they are not heavy duty... more

Don't Waste Your Money
I bought my 105 last year and mow just over a acre at about 70 hours the transmission broke and was replaced under warranty. At just over 100 hours the pulley on top of the transmission come off and took out the gas tank brackets. some replaced on warranty. The rest I had to pay 300 dollars. now again the transmission is going out at 140.

So it lasted about 70 hours. I would not recommend this mower to anyone. the local dealer hinted that any mower bought from chain stores are not the same... more

I just bought one of these mowers. Being a quality control inspector in the steel industry, I check everything out very well before I even use them to make sure everything is put together correctly.

What I have found as a Briggs and Stratton fault, this is the manufacture of this engine on the john deere mowers, is the spark plug is dangerisly too close to the engine. what i did with my mower is, i bought a protective spark plug boot cover, such as they use on racing cars ( you can get... more
