Great Choice
Spent weeks researching brands and models. Selected this one with the bigger engine for our big yard with lots of prunings. The local big box stores couldn't order it. Arrived within a week in perfect shape. Put in the included oil(pay attention to the specs-not normal car oil). Added gas and it fired up on the first half pull. Amazing. Shredded our last 2 years of branches in about 4 hours.

Never died or clogged. Harder to start when hot. A hot engine has more friction than a cold one. An... more

Earthquake 3" Is A Beast!
My Chipper / Shredder arrived on-time and well packaged. The assembly instructions were easy to follow. (Thanks to other reviewers who remind us to NOT drop hardware pieces in the openings! I was VERY careful.)

Spend the money for the Tow Bar. I'm 6'2". Trying to maneuver the Earthquake without the tow bar *may* work if you're about 5', but the angles are all wrong for tall people. The tow bar is a snap to hook up and use. Spend the money for the Tow Bar. (Yes. I wrote that... more

Powerful Chipper / Shredder
Box arrived and Chipper / Shredder was easy to set up.

Shortened two bolts that obstructed the flow of material into the hopper and removed the cover at the feeder tube into the chipper.
Engine starts easy, always on first pull and is quite powerful. Used it quite extensively over the past days and I'm very satisfied with the unit.

Works as advertised and as shown on various videos.

You need to wear safety glasses and use a stick to push material into the shredder if it is stuck in... more

Powerful!
Excellent machine for the price. I am especially pleased with the 305cc engine. It was well worth the extra cost. Very simple assembly. Pulled the guards, of course, and will likely grind off the bolt heads in the chute, though I haven't had any real problems with feed as long as I poke it in with a soft-wood board. I know the manufacturer's hate to hear this, but I've never owned a chipper yet that didn't need the guards taken off, and the use of a pokin' board.

Sort of like the... more

Good Gear
My chipper / shredder arrived on time and in perfect condition. The shipping carton was made of super duty cardboard and did it's job.
With fresh gas and the included oil added to the engine it started on the second pull. I can't comment on the engines sound level because I always wear hearing protection.

The only negative I've found is the claim of a reduction ratio of 20:1. I was shredding some ornamental grass and the reduction seemed closer to 10:1. On the other hand I also shredded... more

I am glad to hear that you are enjoying our chipper shredder. I wanted to provide some information about the reduction ratio.

Reduction ratio is a little different on all types of debris. It mostly depends on how dense of product is being used. To establish the 20:1 ratio we took the average of the most popular items used. Some product (dry leaves of larger size will come close to 40:1 grass is (moist and shorter cut) is closer to 10:1 an average was estimated at 20:1

Thank you for choosing our product and have a wonderful day.

I got this last fall, added oil & gas, then three pulls and I was off and running. Tried to start it today. Oil was fine, I added gas, but no go. Tried for 10 minutes. The spark plug wire was on also. It's only been used one time.

Monster!
This thing is a beast, 3 in. branches no problem. Pulverized everything I threw in it. Shreds everything to a fine mulch! Stable doesn't move. Only negatives are it's not the easiest thing to move around. Awkward is best way to describe. You have to lean it over and pull at a certain angle.

Its chute is plastic, so while it may not rust it also may need to be replaced sooner if hit with an unseen rock. Occasionally you have to use choke even when warm. Not a big deal. Generally starts every... more

Chop Chop!
This woodchipper is great. I've used it for small tree limbs, brush, and leaves.

There is a certain learning curve to using it efficiently and not getting it clogged by stuffing too much stuff at once down the top chute but, once you learn it you'll be very 'chipper'.

This thing breaks limbs down small. I removed the tri-hammers once to see if I could get bigger chips but they were still very small.

Next time I do larger limbs I will try removing both tri-hammers and j-hammers. It... more

Shiiping And Assembly Processes Needs Help
I ordered the 305cc Earthquake chipper. Chippers Direct apparently contracts an independent shipping Co. to deliver the equipment.
One of us had to be home in order to receive the chipper, This was inconvenient since both my wife and I work, and had to take time off. I understand though that it ensures the delivery is made to the right customer. I wasn't home, but my wife was and the chipper was required to be inspected for damage before being accepted. More Than I Expected
After looking at various model chippers I settled in on the Earthquake with the larger motor. I am glad I did because this thing is great. More than enough power to handle yard cleanup without bogging down at all. The bag hooks on kind of goofy but does work and it is cumbersome to move with such a low handle. Being its so small though it is a lot easier to store. Not as loud as I thought it was going to be. The safety guards do make it hard to work with but are removable if you choose. Hands... more

Good Machine
I previously owned a Craftsman Chipper Shredder. The engine eventually seized and was irreparable. At first I was hesitant to buy a new machine as I was sure I needed a larger one, but couldn't see spending $1500 for it. Also, my property is not level which means that the machine has to be moved around by hand including up and down some stairs.

After a lot of research I selected the Earthquake machine with the larger engine. I appreciate all the time people have put into writing reviews,... more

You stated that you added oil before you started the engine and made no mention of an oil leak. Provided you added enough oil I don't see how they determined that the motor was run without oil. After the first 15 seconds of running a 1.5 inch diameter limb through the chipper, it completely stopped. A wood chip lodged in the blade. I removed the cone and the wood chip, replaced the cone and restarted the chipper with much difficulty.

Powerful 305cc Engine
I needed a small chipper recalled a 5HP used years ago that was underpowered so I got this one with the largest engine available. The 305cc engine has plenty of power, I have not bogged it down yet and I have put in 3" dia. branches (hardwood and bamboo) .
I did have restart of warm engine issues at first but I found that about 5/8 to 3/4 choke would restart the engine with no problems when it was warm. A larger catch bag would have been nice for leaves, but, for hardwood, the bag... more

Well Worth It
Needed something to shred lots of Oak leaves, branches and other shrub material. I compost all material and return the compost to my yard and garden.

WHAT I LIKED:
1-Dry (mostly) leaves are broken up reasonably well on the first try and if you have the patience and time, re-running the leaves through the hopper, really breaks them up. Limbs up to 2 to 3 inches thick were no problem, IF they were reasonably straight. Otherwise, don't even try.

2-The shredder motor is very, very... more

I live in TN on a 5 acre parcel, about 75% uncut woods. It has a beautiful log cabin, but there are too many trees that are close to the house, and when they drop acorns, it sounds like a bomb on the metal roofs.

We can use the firewood, but needed a way to dispose of the small branches and small limbs. I did research on the 'Net and ended up purchasing the larger Earthquake chipper/shredder. I have had it about 6 weeks now, and have about 10 hrs. with it.

Expectations Not Exactly Met
Had same issues as Timothy H. Hopper assembly not easy because safety flaps obstructed the view. Also had to use needle nose pliers to open both oil caps. While one of them is more accessible than the other having the filler tube would make it easier. Had to use a file so the holes would line up. Was missing a couple of nuts that they shipped to me after I called. I'm not an engineer but it seems like it could have a better design.

Hopper Fit Probelms
Received shredder. Corrugated box was partially damaged coming off delivery truck but did not believe it was enough to cause damage to shredder. Basically all that had to be assembled was to attach hopper and handle. Main issue is the hopper and the metal throat to the shredder area. Hopper and metal throat guide are very poorly matched. Metal throat guide should feed to the inside of the shredder, they are not a good match. Even now that I have removed the hopper and tweeked the metal... more

The Machine Is Powerful And Does What The Manufacturer Claims.
I can understand the negative feedback from previous buyers. However, the cost of this machine is at least $1,000 less than comparable other brands, therefore the lack of better user friendly features. My only negative feedback would be the way the bag attaches. This is a very poor design and could be improved with little to no added cost.

Hard To Start Due To The Design
I've had other units in the past that had a belt tensioner that allowed me to start the engine before engaging the blades. It makes it much easier to pull it. This unit is direct drive and you have to pull all those hammers and blades to get it spinning. My wife isn't impressed with it because she is not able to start it and it's hard for me to pull to start also. Maybe it will loosen up with wear.

Like other owners I found the hopper to be difficult to fit and of poor Quality material and unreinforced fastening points. I used fender washers instead of those supplied in order to strengthen the clamp area around the bolt holes. I also had to tweek the metal hopper throat insert in order to make it fit into the unit.

Once this was done the chipper ran great. Took 3' (measured) branches without a pause. Glad I got the large engine. Chipped up a 10 X 20 X 3 ft pile of branches in no... more

Had a little difficulty putting it together but once you get it together it seems good. Good Powerful Chipper
It starts easily (so far) and is better at chipping rather than shredding. The hopper entry point is on the small size, probably to make it harder to clog, but given the power of the engine, may be over cautious.
Reduction ratio is very good and I've only jammed it once (probably my fault).
Because it is so heavy and compact it is hard to move around. A longer handle would be helpful.
Overall a useful tool - I have a half acre of woodland to maintain, so it's probably about the right size.

Chipper is easy to assemble, start and chip. Does a great job on leaves (especially with leaf vacuum kit) and small twigs. Chips small (straight) branches very easily.
1) Bag "attachment" needs some work. It is difficult to put the bag on, and unless you really have it cinched down tight, it will blow shredded material out easily. I am contemplating "designing" a better chute/bag holder.
2) Handle sits a little low if you want to move the chipper a very short distance.... more

This is one serious shredder. When you pull start it for the first time, you'll be impressed. There are a number of improvements that could be made in the design, and a couple you may want to try yourself. The front port has a hard rubber cover that you have to push past to feed in a limb. Remove it. Not much comes back out that port to justify that rubber cover. The hooper's rubber shield is basically useless, because it lays flat on the wall. Product Expert
Steven,
You want to be sure you're using fresh gas. Old gas breaks down and will clog the carburetor. There may be something else going on since your chipper is so new. I included the starting instructions from the owners manual below. You may also contact Earthquake's technical support at 1-800-345-6007.

Starting the Engine
1. Set the throttle to FULL.
2. Close the choke.
NOTE: A warm engine may not require choking.
3. Place one foot on the front support leg to hold the
unit firmly in place.
4. Pull the starting rope out to begin turning the engine
over. Pull slowly at first and increase speed with
each successive pull.
5. After the engine starts, open the choke and move the
engine throttle control to SLOW. Warm up the engine
by running it for at least a minute.
6. Set throttle to FULL and begin chipping/shredding.

Earthquake Works Well
My order through Mowers Direct was very smooth. The chipper arrived within the same week. The only assembling required is to mount the hopper. I filled it with gas and oil and it started on the first pull. The rope pull is a bit different in that you have a heavy rotor to turn.

The unit easily handled everything I put in it and the material was all dry wood. Inside the hopper is a metal liner that attaches to the rotor housing. The mount holes were not drilled correctly and the... more

Shrub Shredder
So far I love this machine. It is loud but works great.

Only time will tell how it holds up, but I checked and there are hardly any used ones for sale on e-bay or Craig's List, so I suspect it will fit my needs perfectly.

Very Pleased 68 Year Old Homeowner
Live in Pacific Northwest on one acre with 15+ large maples and 15+ evergreens. At times weather conditions and age cause many branches to break and fall plus numerous leaves in the fall. No burning allowed and only limited yard waste pickup.

Recently purchased my Earthquake chipper/mulcher and it has been a lifesaver. Very user friendly and it started on the first pull right out of the box.

While it is compact (easy storage) it is very sturdy and durable. I would recommend it to... more

Holes Off
When installing the hopper the two outside holes pre-drilled on hopper are a little off of center to screw the (2) bolts & washers. With the (2) nuts hand tightened inside the hopper enlarge the holes on outside of hopper so the (2) bolts & washers will screw in place to strengthen hopper installation. After this is done, the hopper is installed. The reason for hand tightening the (2) nuts inside the hopper is to hold the hopper in place & tilt the hopper to see & increase... more

Great Little Machine
Contrary to my expectation, this little machine has been extremely effective and reliable. Starts immediately on a single pull, and shreds with a vengeance. Many hours of use without a hitch. Hopper chokes up occasionally, but easily cleared. Very happy with this product.

Bad To The Bone!
Mine arrived in perfect shape and it only had 2 nuts and bolts that needed installing. they even give you a quart of oil.

The motor started on the first pull and ran fine all afternoon. It is surprisingly compact yet extremely powerful, and to steal a line from the USPS, "if it fits, it chips".

It's also easy to move around and fits in my shed. I think this is the perfect machine for my 1/2 acre of trees and gardens.

"Could not have been easier. After reading reviews and watching youtube videos I finally decided on this machine and ChippersDirect had the best price. I called them before I ordered and a very nice lady was happy to answer all my questions. The machine showed up on time and in perfect shape and performs great, I couldn't be happier. Thanks!"

Chipper Shredder
Discharge chute is too low to the ground, should have a overhead chute so the chips could be blown into a pickup box.
Pros: Price, Easy To Store
Cons: Difficult To Use
