Rebuttal To Darryl Y
So, I picked up a broken machine at the Menards clearance bin. When I got home, I discovered that it was the one that Darryl Y had reviewed so poorly. Well, here's the fun bit: I called Dirty Hand Tools to see if I could order a new axle shroud (or if I should just weld the old one) and they informed me that the machine was still inside the two year transferable warranty! So, they sent me an entire new lower unit! (See pic 1).

After about 10 minutes of work, I had a brand new machine.... more

Just Junk
Picked this tiller up from a local hardware store!
The weak link is the belt! Mine on the other hand, mine fell on its face! on only the second pass in the garden!
The whole drive shaft unit sheared off!
Store will not stand behind it have to take to a warranty center! Think I made a bad move with this one!

Not Impressed
I only write this review after contacting the company with no response. Also know I didn't buy the tiller from Tillers Direct and I only spent $380 for it new as the place I bought it from is no longer going to carry the line. I can't express my initial disappointment in purchasing a rear tine tiller from dirty hand tools/friction-less world. First after getting the tiller out of the box I noticed no matter how I adjusted the handle it remained out of alignment with the rest of the machine.... more

Look Elsewhere For A Better Tiller
Bought this tiller yesterday. Put together handle and read through manual and filled oil and gas. Fired it up and noticed some smoke on belt area.

Proceeded out to garden to till in some manure not even an inch deep, belt kept slipping and broke before I made one pass. Called customer service and no one around......from other reviews I now see the belt is an extremely weak link in this tiller and that is what I experienced, very weak link and not impressed at all.

Wheels Don't Turn.
New out of the box. Engine runs good. Tines turn. Wheels do not turn even when tilted where they are off the ground. Either the wrong gear was installed or there is no gear at all to drive the wheels. Will take back to store and get refund or a working tiller. Very dissatisfied.

Tom,
Sorry to hear that you are having an issue with the tiller. It sounds like the pins in the wheels need to be moved to the tilling position. Please give our customer service dept a call at 720-287-5182 and they can walk you through this, or it is detailed in the manual. DHT

Works Great For Me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I saw this unit in a local farm store next to MTD and Husq tillers. For the price the Dirty Hand Tools tiller was a much better buy especially since you get a Kohler engine with it.

We have used it vigorously and it has held up to everything we have thrown at it. I adjusted the cable after about 1.5 hrs to account for belt wear. Runs like a champ... Thanks PED.
Pros: Price, High Quality, Exceeded Expectations, I'd Buy It Again

They Know The Engineering Is Bad
I knew that the price was reflective of a bare bones unit, and I was hoping they were step above the MTD junk. Sadly, a few passes in and the belt burned up. I have never seen a belt burn up so quickly. The tines slipped, it smoked, and popped. I did not even have time to shut the unit off. I called DHT for a replacement and complained about the poor design.

They know the belt is a problem on this unit, but they will not re-engineer it. They will tell you it is a "professional... more

Price Is Cheap As Is The Tiller
I purchased this tiller from Menard's at a great price with a store rebate. I have been searching for a tiller and the price is what attracted my attention. I have found that you get what you pay for.

When I opened the box it was packed great. All I had to do was install the handle and wheels. I found that this tiller does NOT have a reverse nor neutral. If you want to roll the tiller to your garden you have to take the pins off the wheels and adjust the wheels which SUCKS. If you want to... more

David,
We are sorry that you were disappointed in your tiller purchase. The features that you are looking for are available in more expensive units. This tiller is a single forward gear which is very typical in this price range. We hope that you are able to find a unit that meets your needs.

Tough Tiller!!!
This tiller should be at the top of your list for a rear tine tiller. It is awesome!! It tears up our 2000 sq ft garden in no time. Engine starts on the second pull. It is a big tiller so beware.....but for bigger jobs it is perfect!! Thanks

Fixed And Fine.
Please remove my previous review. I was very disappointed when the the wheels wouldn't turn but the tines did turn. Wheels were locked in. The screw gear wasn't making contact with the drive gear. I called customer service and they sent a new transmission with tines attached.

It arrived in less than a week. It took about a half an hour to change. Tilled a new garden in hard ground. Adjusted the cable after an hour of use and finished with no troubles. The best Customer Service Dept.... more

Great Tiller If You Read My Review
I do not write reviews. This is my first ever. This tiller is fantastic, once you get it set up right. I read tons of reviews and but after looking at the tillers, they all that junky MTD transmission in it. Face it MTD makes tillers for everyone and their transmission is horrible, don't believe me, well you will if you buy one.

So, even though this tiller had mixed reviews I decided to try it after looking at how the transmission works. The first thing you need to do, is buy a new... more

Drive Belt Poor Quality/tensioning Mechanism Lacking
Bought tiller for counter-rotating tines. Initial use started OK with difficult clay soil. Took light passes but as tines loaded up, belt tensioning mechanism had to be adjusted multiple times. Belt continued to slip on heavy demand areas. Belt failed and replacement belt from NAPA store was guesswork. Manual does not state proper belt length and belt markings don't help either. 25" too short, 26" OK.

Counter-Rotating tines make tiller very manageable, doesn't try to run away... more

Where's The Reverse??
Got my new DHT Model 100983 tiller today. Looks great and appears to be a well built machine for the money. Unfortunately I should have researched more - THIS TILLER has NO REVERSE!! In fact, its only got forward - the thing is locked in drive its whole life. The only way to go anywhere but forward is to pull the pins in the axle to let the wheels spin.

Big time bummer for me as I have a fenced garden and use all available space so I need to be switching gears a lot to get the job done... more

Ryan,
Ryan,

We appreciate your purchase of the DHT tiller and regret that you are not having a positive experience. This tiller in fact only operates with a forward gear as called out in the specs. There are tillers available with a reverse gear, but they are generally more expensive. We want you to be happy with your purchase, if there is anything we can do please give us a call at 720-287-5182. Thanks

Run
I've had 2 of these in 24 hours and still my garden isn't tilled. The Koehler motor is great, the frame is good, the transmission is good but unless your going through butter, the belt is the weak link no matter how you adjust it. Taking the second one back tomorrow. I did not buy this from Tillers Direct.

Beast For Moderate Size Garden
We have some really difficult soil and honestly I wondered if this tiller was enough for our 2,000 sq garden we were installing. Have to say that out of the box it worked really well.

We adjusted the tension of the cables a bit but other than gas and oil that was it. Rode it hard and put it away wet. Looking forward to the fall when we mix in some compost. Thanks PED

Belt Is Weak Link.
I have clay and sand soil. I went to together smooth and started right up. I am impressed with engine and transmission. The tires are small and there is no tire cut out on the by rear tines by the tires. So, there is an issue with dirty and weeds building up. If there were taller tires and cut outs for tires, this would be less of a problem. I burn out 4 belts on this machine.

I have been on the phone with customer service at lease 3 times trying to adjust to belt. Finally, they had a... more

Dirty Hand Counter Rotating Rear Tine Tiller
The Dirty Hand tiller is an excellent piece of equipment. I had purchased the 22 ton Dirty Hand wood splitter this past fall, which exceeded my expectations, excellent equipment. Both pieces of equipment I have are powered by 6.5 H.P Kohler engine. Starts with 1/2 - 1 full pull to get it started, even while its cold.

I have owned/used a Troy-Bilt tiller for 31 years, as with anything mechanical, it finally wears out. After I purchased the wood splitter, I was looking on the Dirty Hand web... more

Missing Drive Belt
Just bought mine 10-20-15 at Menards and they would not take it back because I had put gas in it. LOL though they did pull a drive belt off the floor model for me. On 10-22-15 the drive cable broke and it looks like a part is missing on the belt drive tension pulley. I will be calling today for replacement parts. I'm not a real happy camper right now, we'll see how customer service treats me.

Better Than Expected!
I have seen this unit at TSC and other DHT products at Lowes. For the price it was a great value compared to the other counter rotating tillers out there. The Kohler engine has been great and got through our whole garden on one tank. We probably have about 5 hours on it now. We used it to till in compost in the spring. Great machine...easy to handle.

Awesome Tiller
We bought this 2 months ago. All I can say is this tiller is awesome. Assembled in no time. Put in gas and oil and it was good to go on the first pull. We had to adjust the cable tension a bit but it has run better than expected and really tore up our tough, clay soil. Great DHT product!
