Q: I like the Q310A transfer switch. However, I have space problems. It is not possible to install a transfer switch beside the power panel. Can the transfer switch be installed directly above the power panel? by Chuck K. from Maine on December 11, 2012
A: You can install the transfer switch in any location that you require, you just need to make sure the proper wiring is used when you change out the prewired whip....consult with your installing electrician since they will be familiar with your local codes.
Q: hello, I want to install a transfer switch outside, next to the panel (90A sevice). My questions: 1. this nema1R enclosure is reliable for exterior? 2.if I get the Q310A what generator would you recommand 3. I see that this transfer switch come with the outlet, so the only accessorry that I would have to buy is the cord?
Thank you for your reply! by Florence from California on September 22, 2012
A: A NEMA 1 enclosure is indoor mount only and cannot be mounted outdoors.
The Q310A is rated for up to 7500 watts so any generator up to that capacity will work well with the switch.
The outlet can be mounted on the face of the switch as long as your local code allows it. Otherwise you will need to purchase a power inlet box.
Here is a link to the outdoor switches we offer.....
Q: Is the Reliance Q310C a good choice for my Generac XP7000E. My electrician indicates a need for a 20A 2pole and a 15A 2 pole as well as several single pole breakers. Are the replaceable breakers similar to the Murray that are so available. Is the Reliance PB30 inlet box a good choice? by Allan Peck from Massachusetts on May 24, 2012
A: You cannot use the Q310C with the Generac XP generators. The control panel on the XP models is GFI protected so you must use a GFI type transfer switch. The Reliance Controls "X Series" switches are recommended. Here are a couple models and they are very versatile....
Q: I have 200 amp service, with a 30 amp 5500 wattt generator, looking for a manual transfer switch. I plan on selecting the circuits that I want to have on. Just a transfer 200 amp....which one do you suggest.. by Richard from Arkansas on April 30, 2011
A: The following switch would be the perfect switch for your needs.
Q: Can you replace the factory breakers on the transfer switch with piggyback/tandem breakers so that you will be able to power more than 10 circuits with the Q310A by Joel from Louisiana on February 08, 2011
A: The way this switch is set up internally you cannot use the mini breakers in this unit to increase the number from 10 to 20. The top on off switch only operates each breaker location and to have multiple breakers in one slot it will not operate properly. To have better control over your existing panel a whole house type manual transfer switch should be selected based on your panels amperage rating.
Q: I have a 5550 watt portable generator but i noticed that in the manual it states that it has a starting wattage of 8550 watts. Will i need a transfer switch that can handle 8550 watts? by Lou from Pennsylvania on February 06, 2011
A: Transfer switches are based on the running wattage of generators as the starting wattage is normally only run for a matter of milliseconds.
You will want to base the transfer switch size matched to the largest outlet you have available on your generator. So, if you have a 30A 4-Prong outlet then you would want a 30A transfer switch and a Power Inlet box that is 30A with 4-Prongs. The 4-Prongs allows for 120/240V operation. by Jim, Product Expert
Q: Does the Q306C come as pictured with 6 breakers installed, or do I provide the breakers? by Bob from Maryland on February 05, 2011
A: This product is supplied with a combination of 15- and 20-amp circuit breakers. In some cases, a 30 amp double-pole breaker may be supplied in the A and B positions. All circuit breaker positions will accommodate 15- and 20-amp circuit breakers, and may be easily changed in the field. by Jim, Product Expert
Q: On the Q310A, could I pull the 20 amp 2 pole breaker out and install two 20 amp 1 pole breakers? Also is the only difference between the Q310A and the Q310C is the plug in that comes with the Q310A? by Steve Bill from Minnesota on February 04, 2011
A: Since both the Q310A and Q310C have interchangeable breakers, yes, the 2-pole breaker can be switched out to two 1-pole breakers.
The only difference between the Q310A and the Q310C is the addition of the plug outlet included with the Q310A model.
Q: Hello. What are the main differences between the Q310A and the 31410CRK switches? by Raegen Carr from Florida on January 23, 2011
A: The "Q" Series Reliance Controls transfer switches have interchangeable breakers and their "Pro/Tran" Series do not.
Advantage of interchangeable breakers allows you to adapt the switch to your specific needs. by Jim, Product Expert
Q: I have a new Honeywell HW7500E portable generator that I wish to use for backup in my manufactured home. I'm looking at your Reliance Model Q310A 30 amp transfer switch. I can mount the switch under my panel where it will be about 2 feet from the outside wall. On the other side of that wall is my generator which I would like to keep about 20 feet from the house. My question is this: What components, other than the switch, will I need to get the power from my generator, through the wall and into the house and from there, into the Model Q310A 30 amp transfer switch? by Terry Miller from Arizona on January 22, 2011
A: You would need to purchase a outdoor power inlet box which is basically an outlet you plug the generator into outside. This inlet box is then wired directly to the transfer switch providing the needed power from the generator.
Jim Baugher, Product Expert Power Equipment Direct
Jim's Recommendation
The Reliance Q Series features 1-inch interchangeable circuit breakers. A 30A double-pole circuit breaker and a 20A double-pole circuit breaker, to handle heavier loads on the generator side, are included on each model. The balance of the circuit breakers are single-pole 15A, in the transfer switch these may be connected to 15A or 20A circuits in the load center. Circuits are limited to 15A only on the generator side of the switch.
One of the largest benefits we see is that the circuit breakers in the transfer switch are easily replaced. The spaces containing the 30A and 20A double-pole circuits may be replaced with 15 or 20A single-pole breakers if desired.
If you have a portable generator less than 7500 Watts this transfer switch can be an easy way to avoid running cords all around your house. Plan ahead and have this transfer switch installed to save even more headaches during a power outage!

Ready For The Next Storm
After Sandy, I figured it was time to get a generator and transfer switch. Bought this unit because I have a 100% electric house and need a 30 amp twin breaker for the 50 gallon hot water heater. I took my time and installed the unit little by little until complete. Probably took about 3 hours total over the course of 2 weekends. I have basic residential electrical knowledge, but this unit is unbelievably easy to install. Hardest part for me was mounting the unit because the conduit is too short in my opinion, and my garage is very tight. Overall, great quality unit and great service from Electric Generators Direct..

Q310A
After about 6-8 weeks on back-order status, it shipped. Arrived in good order. Next job was to line up a qualified electrician to install it
I know other posters have installed this unit themselves with seemingly little expertise and minimal stated time expended, but I did not want to take any chances of a costly or dangerous mistake and so hired an electrician. No regrets. He had 30 years experience and indicated that he was seeing more and more customer transfer switches being installed lately. He also is installing more home owners buying the high-end whole-house permanent gen units. He charged $75/hour and took 2.3 hours working diligently (I watched him, no wasted time). He discovered that one of my main breaker switches was mis-labeled and corrected it. He double-checked each of the 10 circuits under generator load after install, and all worked properly. The unit watt meter recorded about a 2000W draw when I turned on our 1,600W microwave. Voltmeter showed a gross voltage of 256V at the generator. Measured 121.5 volts at sockets being powered by the genset, not bad.
Electrician commented that 1) this was a quality unit (he has seen many), and 2) he wished that the manufacturer (Reliance) would include a longer electrical conduit section than what was shipped. All the necessary parts were included, no drama. The new switch/cable/8Kw generator worked flawlessly on first try. All in all, it went well and my home is now 100% generator-ready. Money well spent, about $2200 for the project (gen, switch, cable, electrician). No regrets, great unit and service buying it.

Transfer Switch very nice
Although it was back ordered for about 2 months, we didn't have any outages during the wait. The switch seems well built and the electrician thought it was well designed and was able to install it in short order. Has plenty of switches (of course, more would be better) but it was flexible enough.

Now I'm ready!
When I saw the power outages in NY and NJ after Sandy, I decided it was time to buy a generator and transfer switch. These storms that knock out power seem to be happening a lot more frequently, whether you believe in global warming or not so I'm going to be prepared. I did a lot of online research and decided on the Generac 7500E and the Reliance Controls 30 amp, 10 breaker transfer switch.
Very happy with both. I just finished hooking up the transfer switch today and it took about an hour. There is a great set of videos on YouTube from Reliance Controls on how to do it yourself and they are very helpful. Just type in "transfer switch" in the search and they should come right up. Actually looking forward to my first power outage to see how smoothly everything goes.

Best 30-amp 10-circuit transfer switch
We ran 60 feet of #8 wire from the our shed to this transfer switch (in schedule 40 pipe), then had an Electrician buddy wire the panel for me- it was a lot easier than you would think. Just make sure you distribute the loads evenly. He was impressed with the versatility of this unit because the wires and unit were clearly labeled.
We needed a 30 amp double pole to power the 55 gal. electric hot water heater and this was the only transfer switch we found that had a 30 amp circuit. (You just have to make sure you shut down other breakers when heating the water). This bad boy allows us to run the LR/ DR/ MBR/Mbath/ Kitchen/ Refrigerator/Furnace/well pump and of course, the hot water heater.
I go the generator, transfer switch, power inlet box, #8 wire, and conduit all for well under $2000. You can't beat peace of mind- even if I am not home the wife can easily get this system up and running. My generator has electric start, and there's no need to shut down the House main- just flip on the circuits on the Transfer switch and she is set to go.
If you are thinking of getting a 5500 watt generator or smaller, don't- spend a couple of extra dollars and get a 7500 watt unit. You'll have lots of power to spare.
When Sandy hit we were ready. I even ran a couple of cords to my neighbors house. Are you ready for the next storm?

Easier than you think
I was a bit intimidated by the sheer number of wires, but the actual wiring process is almost foolproof. And, the safety and convenience of the installed switches is great.
I would suggest that at least half of the included single pole breakers should be 20 amp rather than 15. In my case all but one had to be changed, but then they are not expensive.
EGD RESPONDS: We need to remind folks that some towns and some insurance companies require changes to the circuit breaker box be certified by a registered electrician. Be sure to check with your insurance agent and zoning board.

So good my electrician wanted one
I ordered this switch when it was on backorder, but it was shipped and received as promised.
I already had a six circuit transfer switch on my 200 amp home service and a reliable 6500 generator. My intent was to upgrade to whole-house by using manual load sharing, including my high efficiency 3 1/2 ton Trane air conditioning that covers my 2400 sq ft residence, using the dual 30 amp breakers to do so.
I had abandoned the idea of putting in a whole-house natural gas standby generator when I picked affordable models and got estimates for installation that, for me, were cost prohibitive.
I hired an small electrical contractor to install the transfer switch. He advised against covering the air conditioner because of the size of my generator, replacing the 30 amp breakers with 20s. I was able to cover 2 refrigerators, microwave, gas furnace, garage door opener, and all lights and receptacles in my master bedroom, master bath, kitchen, breakfast room, and great room. This included my home theatre set up and the ceiling fans that I have in each room.
We fired it up after installation and I brought the higher wattage items online first and watched the meters. I did not use the microwave or the gas furnace, but neither of the two meters ever got over 1500 watts. I balanced the loads to ensure neither side would overload.
I understand that I may have to manually adjust the loads to protect my generator, but I am a happy man. I have two bedrooms and two other baths not covered but they are on the other end of the house and they will always be warm; and there always extension cords if absolutely necessary. My situation is made better by the fact I also have a gas water heater.
A few days after my electrician did the install he called to find out where I got the switch because another customer wanted a similar system. It may be for another customer but I suspect it was for himself. He was impressed during my install by how easy it was to swap out breakers for a custom install, but I knew what I was getting.
Thanks.

Great Switch!
Local power outages lately seem to coming more often, and of longer duration. In July 2012 west suburban Chicago had a huge storm, and we were out for 5 days.
I wanted / needed a transfer switch for safety, and ease of hook up (the wife might need to hook up sometime).
Jim helped me select a Reliance Q310C, and I’m very satisfied with the choice. It covers all my essentials, and delivers power to hard-wired items like the furnace, well, bathroom and kitchen lights. No more extension cords for the fridge, microwave, laptop and phone charger. The switch is prewired, so it was only a couple hours for an electrician to hook up.
An email to Reliance went unanswered, but luckily Jim at Electric Generators Direct was very helpful and reachable. I recommend these folks.

Very Honest Product
This transfer switch is very easy to install yourself. If you know how to change a circuit breaker in your home's service panel then this job will be simple for you. The transfer switch is pre-wired and everything is labeled and color-coded.
I didn't need the included double-pole 20A breaker so I just went to the big box store and got myself 2- 20 amp singles for $3.50 each and inserted them in the sockets. Now I can control 8 circuits plus the 30A double pole for my electric water heater.
I call this an honest product because the product description is accurate and the instructions are very well written, even for a non-pro. I'm glad I found and bought this transfer switch.

Best transfer switch
I bought this for my in-laws. They bought a Generac XG8000 and needed a transfer switch. They originally bought a six circuit from a bog box store, but it wasn't big enough.
Then I ordered this one and what a difference... great product and by far superior to what the big box store was selling.

Excellent product and workmanship on this Reliance control box.
I found the price to be very fair, and it was very easy to install by the DIY-er if you have the basics.
Easy to read installation instructions are included. I am not an electrician by any means, and found easy to do on my own; it went very well with no problems or issues.

Excellent Transfer Switch & Good Service
First, I want to thank EGD for their excellent customer service and fast shipping.
Its amazing to me, that the hardest part of installing one of these switches is the mounting of the unit and channeling the conduit. Especially if your load center is flush mount. That part took me the better part of 2.5 hours and a trip to the hardware store. Connecting the wiring was the easiest part done in about 45 minutes.
The nice thing about this switch is you can run one heavy duty appliance with the 30 amp breaker. I also wound up replacing the double pole 20A breaker with 2 single pole 20A's which also was very easy with this switch. The breakers are available most places.
Once I tested my install, I found that switching back and forth between line and gen was seamless. Its really nice that you can see the load on the watt meters. I had planned my install to balance the load and the watt meter showed it.
The only issue was I had a GFCI breaker in my panel that tripped every time I switch back to Line from Gen. If I understand correctly this is due to the generator being neutral bonded. I could be wrong on that but in any case I fixed it by removing the GFCI breaker and making the couple of outlets it powered GFCI instead. I was also told by a friend with one of these to connect the generator ground to the house ground if possible to balance things out.
Good luck on your install.

So Easy, Even A Knuckle-Dragging Mechanical Engineer Can Do It
Bought this transfer switch after the June 2012 VA land hurricane to hook up my Generac 6500 to the house. Haven't had to use it yet (spending the $$$ seems to be the best 'outage insurance' available), but the installation was MUCH easier than I expected. I bought some butt splice connectors at Lowes, which seemed to work better than the typical 'wire nuts' used to join wires together. The wiring was totally straight-forward and easy. The only hard/frustrating part was mounting the switch in such a way that the conduit reached an available hole in the bottom of my breaker box. Took about 3 hours total, but a good portion of that was solving the mounting/conduit problem. Actual wiring time was probably an hour or so.

A Good Example Of An Inter-Changable Model
Installation was pretty easy... Planning ahead on which circuits to use will help quite a bit.
If you double click on the Transfer box, the far left came as a double pole 30 amp breaker.I removed it swapped over two 15 amp breakers. If we had an electric water heater, it would have stayed. Also replaced 5 of the 6 -15 Amp breakers with 5- 20Ampers. Electrician friend and I swapped. We kept the double pole 20Amp for a thru the wall large Air Conditioner..24Kbtu.
Electric stove, washer, dryer etc were not connected. Too much draw and really not needed in a crisis...
So, we managed to get 9 circuits energized via the transfer box. The power assist box is located on the outside wall of our deck and was drilled thru into the basement. The 30Amp Power cable was bought at the big box store along with the male/female ends as we were not sure at the time where we were going to locate the outdoor power assist box. We changed our location 3xs...
So all and all, about 4 hrs including a trip to the store for the extras..I also realized that to test, I didn't have to shut any panel box circuits off.The double throw switches prevent any backflow....Very impressed with the equipment and am sure it will be a lifesaver next power outage.

I purchased my Reliance Q310A transfer switch from Electric Generators Direct after hurricane Irene left us without power for five days. It arrived earlier than promised and impressed me as a well-made and well thought-out product. After watching Reliance’s on-line instructional video and determining which circuits I wanted to route through the switch, the actual installation took only a few hours. The Q310 has interchangeable circuit breakers and I had to swap out a few of the supplied ones to accommodate my needs. Fortunately it uses an inexpensive style breaker that I was able to pick up at the local home improvement store for next to nothing.
I wound up installing a Reliance PB30 Input Box on the outside of the house, so I could have bought the Q310C (without the receptacle) for $10.00 less. But I wasn’t sure what I was going to do when I ordered it, so I wanted to keep my options open.
The bottom line is: I’m very happy with the Reliance Q310 and with Generators Direct (who had it at an excellent price with free shipping). The instructions were very clear and the installation went off without a hitch. I would heartily recommend the Reliance Controls Q310 transfer switch and Electric Generators Direct to anyone.
One final recommendation for anyone installing this switch themselves: Plan everything before doing anything - Then it will be easy.

I did alot of research on transfer switches verses an interlock switch. After deciding the transfer switch was the way to go, I looked at what my local stores and what the internet had to offer.
The Reliance internet site was the best I found and the video they have on installation was great. I then found Electric Generators Direct web site to be the best. The details, selections, and ability to email questions was awesome. Their prices were good and in my opinion the reliance Q310A is the perfect model and design. Nothing else comes close.
If you get something smaller you will probably regret it someday and if you get a larger model you better have a big generator hooked up to your gas line.

Easy set up
Purchased this set up for occasional power outages.
Instructions are fantastic and easy to follow. The whole set up took me no more than 3 hours to complete and that included a trip to the local store for black, white, red, and green 10-gauge wire for the power inlet box, some 20-amp breakers because I wanted to change the box around a little and, some other small items.
Watch the videos on Reliance Controls web site as well as read the directions a few times prior to install and you should have no problem getting this installed.

Very Happy
A very good product. It was very easy to install if you understand electricity and you are a good DIYer. I
t works just like they say it does and I'm very happy with it.
EGD RESPONDS: Please check local ordinances for electrical panel installation and/or modification; some require work to be done or certified by a licensed electrician.

Heavy Duty & Easy To Install
The transfer switch is heavy duty and easy to install. The instructions were simple and you can even see a connection video at the company site.
I managed to power up the entire house with the exception of the stove. If I run the electric water heater I obviously have to limit other loads.

Nice piece of equipment
I have a 6500 Watt generator and own a home with geothermal heat and electric water heater, and a gas fireplace for backup heat.
This 10 circuit switch is a tad bit large for my generator, but I wanted the capability to have lights, microwave, sump pump, and refrigerator circuits powered, or by turning these circuits off during the day, I can turn the hot water heater on to heat our water.
Once the water is hot, I can shut the 220 circuit off and turn all eight of the remaining circuits on which would allow us to live normally.
I used the Q Series recess kit to recess into the wall. The total installation time was approximately five hours at a relaxed pace.
Anyone with basic carpentry and electrical skills can achieve the same results I have. Instructions were excellent.
Once I identified the circuits I wanted to operate on the generator, I used an amp clamp to pre-plan balancing the generator load, thus actual installation was a breeze.
I used small color dots, seen in the picture, to identify importance and these match up with the identical color dot placed in the main fuse box on the circuit breaker.
I have given a picture to display how nice the panel looks recessed. It's a nice piece of equipment.
In the future should the need again arise for either a generator or transfer switch, I definitely will buy from this company.
I found their help to be superb and highly recommend them.

First class equipment, honest company
I just want to pass along the excellent service and equipment your company provides.
I placed an order and within days the components started to arrive, and the generator was delivered right to my doorstep.
I received this equipment just as the second major snow storm arrived in Texas.
First class equipment and a wonderful, honest company- need I say anymore?!

American Made With Pride
Reliance Controls has helped to restore my faith in AMERICAN and MADE with PRIDE.
It is high quality, built well, and functions perfectly as advertised- well worth the investment.
I give it a five star rating... I made my own hinged plexiglass cover to prevent dust intrusion from the shop.
Excellent experience and service from Electric Generators Direct, I would definitely purchase from them in the future.

Great Product
I installed this unit without a hitch. I recessed the switch in the wall.
I took the NEMA Plug out and Hard wired the switch. The directions were good.
Don't mind the patchy drywall. It is temporary until I get a new sheet to cut a one-piece replacement.
I would buy Reliance from this website again.
Fast shipping, no problems.

The generator seems to fit my needs perfectly. I purchased an EMERGENCY unit since it will only receive limited duty but will have excellent care and maintenance. I do expect longevity of this unit using it as stated, time will tell. The customer service at EGD is nothing short of the best I've dealt with. Kris is extremely knowledgeable, polite, and most helpful with any and all questions asked of him.
The Century cable is capable of doing what it was designed to do.
The Transfer switch is a neat package with many options to suit most anyone's needs.
The Reliance PC3040 also purchased appears ok, but there are issues that are being addressed ongoing. They (Reliance) also have an excellent service orientated dept. represented by Nick who is working on these issues with me. Hopefully all will work out in the final analysis.

And ComEd didn't let me down. Four days after having transfer switch installed, ComEd is down for six hours. Our neighborhood is cursed. My one practice run through after installation made things go perfectly. Generator fired right up, flipped a few switches and we had lights, TV, fans, freezer and fridge and peace of mind. Only house in neighborhood that had power. And I was worrying that I had talked my wife into a big ticket item that we would hardly use. She's Generac's biggest fan now.
Only two concerns: I was told in a q and a with your firm that unit was made in the U.S. Not the case. Made in China. I would have gone to a bigger model to get made in the USA. And ad on the web site talked of "handles." But model has only one, which is ok for me but more difficult for my wife.
