Q: My backyard is more like gravel than dirt, I call is shale, but I'm not sure if that is accurate. Just digging holes for plants and trenching I use a pick-ax to loosen the dirt first and then scoop it out with a shovel. Will this tiller work well in this situation?
by Mike from Georgia on September 21, 2013

A: Mike,

These tillers were designed for more of a compacted dirt application. You might find yourself with too much resistance with a heavily rocky soil bed. The DRT900E would offer some success, but I think you would be looking at premature wearing of the transmission and the belts. You would probably lose a shear bolt or two.
by Robert, Product Expert
Q: What advantage is there to the dual rotation on the tines?
by Troy Johnston from Colorado on May 09, 2013

A: Troy-

Like the counter-rotating tiller, the dual-rotating machine has one extra feature: It can work in both forward and reverse tine motions. Considered a higher-end tiller, this heavy-duty machine choice gives you the most versatility. For example, you may be tilling some very softer ground using the forward motion but then move on to an area that is extremely compacted. You can automatically switch into reverse gear so that the tiller's tines cut deeply into the soil without much effort from you.
by Robert, Product Expert
Q: How many horse power is this tiller?
by Jeff from Alabama on May 03, 2013

A: Jeff - There is no true conversion from HP to cc's. A 205cc engine is roughly equal to 6 or 6.5 hp.

Great Tiller
I am a 72 YO man and have been using this tiller for 3 seasons. I agree with an above post something about difficult to turn however, this is a strong rear tine garden tiller and none that I have ever used was "steerable" as both wheels pull when engaged. Not for a "light weight" to operate because it is heavy and requires some strength to turn, takes getting used to for the new gardener.

Having said all of that, I till approx 1600 square feet of garden and have had... more

Great machine, Getting to that age that I want everything electric start. Love to work in the garden but it is harder to do even the routine task, this machine is heavy duty and dose a great job of tilling with minimal effort.

It is a heavy machine, and very slow so you may not be happy with how long it will takes compared to some light "beat you senseless" big box store machine. But since I retired, I have learned "You can do tomorrow what you can't get done today"

Ordered It For My Dad
MY dad just retired this year an he wanted to have a big garden again. We used it to break the ground that have not been used in years if ever.

My dad has very muddy/clay soil. My dad till the soil about 5 times to get a good till soil for his garden. He is very happy with it. I would buy it again.

Nice Tiller, Poor Instructions
It is a nice tiller.

Assembly instructions were lacking any details about the front bumper, which was not attached. Ended up having to take the front counter weights off to install the bumper.

And the engine manual says that there should be a dipstick for the oil level, but there isn't one. I put in exactly the amount of oil specified in the instructions, but that was too much. On first use had a lot of smoke from oil in the combustion chamber.

One thing I do miss from my old MTD is... more

Have Not Used My New Husqvara Drt900e(17") 205 Cc Tiller Yet .
We still have some live plants in the garden producing tomatoes, beans, peas, peppers and okra, also the part that's out of production needs a good rain before tilling. THANK YOU FOR YOUR INTREST!

I'm Old
I needed a tiller that would make my gardening a lot easier i have oxygen problems so I cannot pull corks multiple times. This tiller started on first pull and every time there after.

Has a electric start which I thought i would need to use but this tiller starts so easy i'm in dream land. Works great and is making my life much easier.
Pros: Easy To Use, Durable, Exceeded Expectations, Reliable

Total Disappointment
There is no clearance for rocks -- breaks shear pins. Because there is no clearance, it bent the hood. It is really hard to shift. The electric start requires a long extension cord. My garden is 100 feet from an outlet. My garden has been worked for over 30 years, and we take rocks out every time we see a rock, however, because we live in the Pittsburgh area -- rocks continually surface....this machine is much too fragile. I would not recommend it. It has been a loss of a considerable... more

Love It!
I LOVE the electric start - our garden is near an outlet, but I can actually restart with the pull thingy if I have to.
Also, compared to the Pony I've been using for the past ten years, this tiller is much easier to control.

The only bad things were that the control thing to make it go was mounted upside down on the handle - we were able to fix that easily - and the instructions didn't mention the guard that goes on the front so it took us a while to figure out what that was!
Pros: Easy To Use, Price, Exceeded Expectations, Reliable
Cons: Incomplete Instructions

I am old (80) and the electric start is for me. It is 110V but I have a generator and a car converter, so no problem. Have not used it because it starts on first pull.
