Q: Why do you recoommend Troy built over Honda Mini Tiller
by John Kovach from Massachusetts on May 01, 2011

A: Hi John - this is our first year carrying the Honda tillers, so I don't have a lot of experience with these. The reviews we have gotten from customers who own the Honda have been kind of a mixed bag. I have seen a couple of reviews that talk about how this model loses power the more you use it, which I can't confirm or deny from personal knowledge. With that said, I would recommend the Troy-Bilt TB146EC. The small Troy-Bilt cultivators are very dependable, and Troy-Bilt really is synonomous with garden tillers. The small Mantis tillers are also very popular, and are quite dependable as well. Hope this helps.

We have been using our new Honda tiller for a couple of weeks now and I must say "don't be fooled by thinking this tiller is too small!" This machine packs a lot of punch and has done wonders for our garden and landscaping. So far - so good and I highly recommend. We also purchased the border/edger attachment which will be a huge time saver!

Old Garden Rates Honda Fg 110 Best Mini-tiller
I've gardened for over 40 years. I was spoiled on a big Troy Bilt (one that was made in N.Y.) But as I grew older my garden grew smaller and I need a need a tiller I could lift and maneuver in tight spots. I check out every mini-tiller/cultivator sold and settled on Honda FG110. What a great decision.

It is small and easy to turn and pull backwards to mound your soil plus it has bolo tines, like my old Troy. Bolo tines break ground better than straight tines of a Mantis. There's a reason... more

This Is A Great Machine
I've had this little guy for about 8 years. Its always run great for me. Look people, the smaller your engine generally the smaller the carbs. They are becoming more fickle due to the ethanol in the gas and the restrictions the EPA puts on these companies. This is what I do:

1. I only use super unleaded that's ethanol free.

2. I change the oil and do the regular inspections that it needs.

3. I take a cap full of Sta-bil and run the engine for about ten minutes to make sure it has... more

Pleasantly Surprised And Pleased!
We bought some fruit & nut trees a little late in the season, not expecting them to ship until fall. But they came in mid May when we already had 90 degree weather!! Not only that, but they came on a Monday. Knowing my husband would be away for work from 7am to at least 7pm (I'd be lucky if he got home that early), that meant I would be having to do all the work, because the bare-root trees needed to be put in the ground immediately. And the planting sites hadn't been prepared yet!!! I... more

Bye Bye Mantis
After three Mantis tillers I believe we found one that is worth all the money, we do a lot of gardening the Mantis just couldn't hold up. I think other people don't use there's as much as we do or maybe just bad luck on our side, but its time to try the Honda we shall see. So far so good, starts every time without any trouble, well balanced, and lots of power. But for the money we shall see.I own over thirty air cooled tools some for over thirty years old and still run strong with just general... more

Good At First
I'll echo what has been said by others. It is a fantastic machine out of the box and outperforms any expectations I'd have for a small cultivator. I even used it to tear up sod the first year I had it for a garden and a couple of landscaping beds. Last year was the third year I operated it and I started having the same issues everyone else mentions. No power, low RPMS, smoked like a freight train.. I'd maintained the machine over its life and when I started having these issues, the first... more

Carb Problems
As you can guess, the little Honda tiller I should be using to turn over my small 15 x 20 garden right now is in the shop. It's been there for over 3 weeks now and they're still scratching their heads. My neighbor with the Mantis is laughing at me. He's had that thing for 10 years. I've had mine for 6, the first 3 working well and really tearing up the dirt. Since then it's been on a steady, undependable, curse at the garden gods decline until now where the idle and start is ok but as soon... more

Rings Shot
I bought the Honda expecting a very high quality machine. At first, it was a super-duper machine. Then, it started losing rpms. It got hard to start. Then it quit starting. Now, I learn that the rings are shot. It's not worth repairing. I think the air filter was cheap and didn't do its job, thus dust ruined the cylinders. I maintained it well it was just an expensive, cheap machine. Too bad.

Service Problems
I am starting my 4th season, have a small garden. At first I was very happy with it, but my enthusiasm is fading fast. My problem is that the tiller is losing power. It runs great when first starting, but as it warms up it loses power to the point that it will not turn the times even in loose soil. I bought it at Northern Tool, and now they don't have a service person. There is not another Honda outdoor equipment dealer within 30 miles of me. I replaced the spark plug at the end of last... more

Carborator And Gas Issues
Mine is three year old. The first season was GREAT!!!!! Oh the love. It is perfect in size. However, as time has gone on, season two I lost power, tried new oil and filters....ended up with a new carburetor. Season three, nothing but issues, I had to get two new carburetors in one season and by fall I was still in need of yet a third carburetor! I spent more money in new carburetors than for the tiller itself! Very disappointed! I was told my gas must be bad, but it was fresh, new gas... more

Carburator Problems
After using it for about a month, would not keep running. I took it to the dealer and he told the carburator was dirty and that I had used old gas. The gas I used is the same as I use in my lawnmower and have never had a problem. He cleaned it and within a month - same thing. Again I was told I used bad gas. I had it cleaned, put for sale on Craigslist and got rid of it.
