Q: Can I purchase a remote control for the 11 thousand watt Generac generator? You did have one for the 10 thousand watt Generac generator.

by Lowell F. Anderson from New York on February 11, 2014

A: Generac has never offered any type of remote controls for their generators. They offed remote "monitoring" allowing you to view the status of the unit from inside your home and the only control that was available was the ability to start a maintenance/exercise cycle.

Currently Generac offers 2 remote monitoring options with their basic wireless monitor (3-Lights) or their Mobile Link monitor (cellular).

Here are the links to view each item....

Generac Wireless Monitor

Generac Mobile Link

Please note that these systems must be connected to a Generac automatic transfer switch and cannot be run manually. The internal generator controller will error when not connected to the appropriate automatic transfer switch and the warranty would be void due to improper installation.

Q: I have a low pressure nat. gas line in my residence, what is the largest generator I will be able to run without doing major updates ?

by Chuck from Ohio on December 10, 2013

A: The Generac line of home standby systems can now operate on low pressure natural gas. Their low fuel pressure requirement is 3.5" to 5" of water column (1" of water column = 0.036 PSI).....0.123 PSI to 0.18 PSI. This would be for all sizes from 8kW up to 20kW.

Proper sizing of the generator is crucial to the success of any generator installation and requires a good working knowledge of electricity and its characteristics, as well as the varying requirements of the electrical equipment comprising the load.

A certified electrician needs to be consulted for proper sizing and installation of any generator.

When analyzing the electrical load, consult the manufacturer’s nameplate on each major appliance or piece of equipment to determine its starting requirements in terms of amps and voltage which can be calculated to watts using Ohms Law (Amps x Volts = Watts).

When choosing the generator output select a rating that is approximately 20 to 25% higher than the peak load (for example, if the load is about 8 kilowatts, select a 10 kW generator).

A higher rated generator will operate comfortably at approximately 80% of its full capacity and will provide a margin of flexibility if the load increases in the future.

Note: Applications such as commercial, all-electric homes, heat pump systems or geothermal systems require special installation procedures and a certified electrician must be contacted to evaluate and install these types of systems.

Q: What type of oil should I use in my Generac home standby generator?
by Jim from Illinois on November 11, 2013

A: The maintenance section in the Generac's home standby owner's manual lists that the oil type is based on temperature ranges specific in your area.....

SAE-30 above 32º F (0º C)
10W-30 between 40º and -10º F (4º and -23º C)
Synthetic 5W-30 for all temperature ranges

All new models come with SAE-30 oil in them and have been test run at the factory for 25 hours and no break-in is required. The first oil change would be at 2 years or 200 hours, whichever comes first.

Q: I was wondering if these generators can run on butane? Or if there is a conversion needed to do so?
by Adrian from Florida on September 10, 2013

A: Thank you for your interest in Electric Generators Direct!

The Generac Guardian Home Standby Generators are designed to operate on either Natural Gas, or Liquid Propane. Unfortunately, they are unable to operate on butane and no known conversion kits are available for this purpose.

by Mike, Product Expert

Q: What is the THD on this model?
by Joe Luiso from Massachusetts on September 06, 2013

A: Thanks for the inquiry!

The Generac Guardian Home Standby Generators feature True Power™ Technology with superior harmonics and sine wave forms that produce less than 5% Total Harmonic Distortion for quality power. This allows confident operation of sensitive electronic equipment and micro-chip based appliances, such as variable speed HVAC systems.

Q: I just purchased a 11kW generator and would like to know the max distance that I can run 1/2 inch steel pipe to my generator?

by Spencer Aucoin from Louisiana on June 27, 2013

A: The fuel pipe requirements are:

Natural Gas:

1/2" - Cannot Use
3/4" - Max 20 Feet
1" - Max 85 Feet
1-1/4" - Max 370 Feet

Liquid Propane Vapor: (Note: Pipe sizes are using a second stage regulator)

1/2" - Cannot Use
3/4" - Max 70 Feet
1" - Max 255 Feet
1-1/4" - Max 1000 Feet

Natural Gas Pressure: 3.5 - 7 Inches Of Water Column
Liquid Propane Vapor: 10 - 12 Inches Of Water Column

***A properly sized gas pipe is critical to the proper operation of the generator. The generator inlet size has no bearing on the proper gas pipe size.***
by Mike, Product Expert

Q: As a follow-up to my question earlier today what are the main or important differences,if any, between the Generac Guardian 10 kw nat. gas generator Model 5883 and the Model 6439.
by Bob Richardson from New York on May 28, 2013

A: Generac went ahead and improved on the design, warranty and ease of installation after listening to consumer reviews and technicians.

They bumped up the warranty an additional 2 years to give it a solid 5 year overall which is one of the highest rated on the market.

They improved on the generator controller by upgrading to a new technology and moved from their very good Nexus design to the new and improved Evolution controller. This new controller has a back-lit interface with LED's that shows the generator status at a glance.

The new Evolution controller includes maintenance reminders and logs, battery condition (no guessing) and over a half-dozen additional alarms the Nexus controller did not have. This thing rocks!

They upgraded the engine to include a no choke carburetor which helps with all weather starting. They changed the fuel selector for natural gas and LP to an easy knob that is easy to access and change fuel type with ease (No tools required).

For the installers they made several changes to help with installation costs and time, minimize errors and accommodate current and future electric code interpretations by re-engineered some of the wiring connections.

With the changes to the carb and engine they were able to change the low fuel pressure rating for Natural Gas down from 5" of Water Column to 3.5" of Water Column. This will help tremendously with low fuel pressure areas in the country so the meters do not need to be changed as often.

With all of these upgrades they have performed I believe Generac's newest model is one of the best out there and comes highly recommended.

Dependable Generator
I am an electrical contractor and have installed many of these units. I have never had a customer call back to tell me that the generator did not start in an outage. I have had them thank me when it did come on though!!

Finally. It's in and now I'm hoping for a power failure. We were able to wire up the whole house and I am confident that while away on Fire assignments, or vacation, everything in my house will work for the house sitters....automatically. Plus if a wildland fire is in the area, and we lose power, we will still have the ability to use our well for fire protection and turn on the roof sprinklers.

11kw Generac
I bought this generator to back up our computer room in a small business setting. Very easy to install. Quite a few bad reviews but I bought a Generac 17KW six years ago for my house and it has operated flawlessly with almost 200 hours. So Bang for the buck we decided to go with another Generac. If you live in a cold climate I recommend the cold weather kit seems to work perfectly. The only thing I would like to see Generac offer, is a monitoring system that works, possibly hardwired. We bought... more

So Far So Good
Our new Generac Guardian 11KW generator comes on automatically for it's weekly test. I don't need to go out and start it myself or put fuel in it. It is tied into the 100Amp switch and a starter kit. It a a great standby generator which is connected into our Natural Gas line so no fuel worries.

Great Generator But Be Aware!
Built my house in 2012 and installed a Generac GenReady Multi-Breaker Load Center and Transfer Switch which was supposed to allow for a trouble free installation of a guardian generator at a later date. However, after completion of the generator installation this year, there was a warning on the control pad that said "charger missing AC". After troubleshooting, it was determined that there is supposed to be a wire that connects to the transfer switch (T1) from the generator. The... more

Let There Be Light
Finally on line, winter moving in. First snow of the year to hit the ground here in R.I. Starting off like last year, only difference when the power goes off we will still have electric. Even if it doesnt it feels great knowing we are prepared. No more extension cords, wondering if you have enough gas, available, and will the old gen start.

You Are On-guard With Generac
Live on N/W side of Chicago near Forest preserve, where it seems the power goes out quite a bit during winter and fall. Well last winter the power went out,and within 2hours the house was down to 55 degree's, all I could hear was my neighbors Generac purring like a cat, keeping them warm. That's when i decided it was time to buy the generator. Call Wolfgang Schnaufer Generac dealer who professionally installed unit. It was a pleasure doing business with him and his worker's.

Very Unreliable Product
I reviewed this item when I first got it and gave it a poor review because it leaked oil. Well things just keep getting worse. Since I had the oil leak the battery started leaking acid as well. After several weeks Generac agreed to replace the generator. They did this and when the new generator arrived, it had a blown fuse which the installer had to replace.

One week later when I tested it to power up the house the transfer switch broke and I had no power at all. The installer... more

Leaks Oil
Installed product two weeks ago. On the installation test oil began leaking out. The installer reconnected some hoses that loosened and left. On the second week of testing the oil continues to leak I have been in touch with Generac for the two weeks since the incident and they have not responded at all other than to say they are reviewing the problem.
Cons: Low Quality, Unreliable, Durability

I would suggest getting in contact with your installer or a Generac service dealer in you area. There could be a manufacturing defect in your generator or you might have a loose fitting, hose or oil filter. This would be a fairly easy problem to diagnose. And if it is a defect, it would be covered under warranty.
