  26 Questions
Q: Does the 17kW generator come with transfer switch and everything else electrical that i would need?

by Jim Cote from North Dakota on June 24, 2013

A: The whole house 17kW (Model 6053) comes with a 200A automatic transfer switch. You would need to provide the starting battery and all wiring.

The essential circuit 17kW (Model 5873) comes with a 100A "PreWired" automatic transfer switch (length info listed in specs). You would need to provide the starting battery and if you exceed 50 feet from electrical panel the entire wiring harness would need to be replaced by your installer.

Note: All home standby generators require a solid base which could be either concrete, crushed stone or pea gravel with a minimum of 4 inches thick.

by Jim, Product Expert
Q: My 500 gal propane tank has a two stage regulator on it . Do I need another regulator at the the generator?
by Michael Schwartz from New York on October 07, 2012

A: A regulator may be required if the pressure exceeds the generators required 10 to 12 inches of water column (0.36 - 0.43 psi)

by Jim, Product Expert
Q: Are mounting bolts for concrete install included in unit packaging?
by Walter from South Carolina on October 06, 2012

A: Generac does not provide the concrete mounting bolts with the generator because it is optional to permanently mount it to concrete.
by Jim, Product Expert
Q: Does the 5870 construction (enclosure make up) meet NFPA 37 condition 2 requirement?
by Bob from New Jersey on October 02, 2012

A: Subsection 4.1.4 of NFPA 37 reads as follows:

“4.1.4 Engines Located Outdoors. Engines, and their weatherproof housings if provided, that are installed outdoors shall be located at least 1.5 m (5 ft) from openings in walls and at least 1.5 m (5 ft) from structures having combustible walls.
A minimum separation shall not be required where the following conditions exist:

(1) The adjacent wall of the structure has a fire resistance rating of at least 1 hour.
(2)* The weatherproof enclosure is constructed of noncombustible materials and it has been demonstrated that a fire within the enclosure will not ignite combustible materials outside the enclosure.”

A4.1.4 (2) Means of demonstrating compliance are by means of full scale fire test or by calculation procedures.
Because of the limited spaces that are frequently available for installation, it has become apparent that exception (2) would be beneficial for many residential and commercial installations. With that in mind, the manufacturer contracted with an independent testing laboratory to run full scale fire tests to assure that the
enclosure would not ignite combustible materials outside the enclosure.

Per Generac Owner's Manual (All 8, 10, 14, 17 & 20kW Air Cooled Automatic Standby Generator):

The criteria was to determine the worst case fire scenario within the generator and to determine the ignitability of items outside the engine enclosure at various distances. The enclosure is constructed of non-combustible materials and the results and conclusions from the independent testing lab indicated that any fire within the generator enclosure would not pose any ignition risk to nearby
combustibles or structures, with or without fire service personnel response.

Based on this testing and the requirements of NFPA 37, Sec 4.1.4, the guidelines for installation of the generators listed above are changed to 18 inches (457mm) from the back side of the generator to a stationary wall or building. For adequate maintenance and airflow clearance, the area above the generator should be at least 4 feet with a minimum of 3 feet at the front and ends of the enclosure.
This would include trees, shrubs and vegetation that could obstruct airflow. See the diagram on the installation drawing within the owner’s manual on under the specs link for details.

Generator exhaust contains DEADLY carbon monoxide gas. This dangerous gas can cause unconsciousness or death. Do not place the unit near windows, doors, fresh air intakes (furnaces, etc.) or any openings in the building or structure, including windows and doors of an attached garage.

by Jim, Product Expert
Q: I have received my 20Kw Generac 5875. Was it shipped with oil or do I need to add oil before i start it up? Or is it just a break in oil (the oil on the dip stickis very light) that needs to be removed and filled with what I will be using in this area? Shipment was timely and arrived n excellent condition.
by Larry from Washington on September 30, 2012

A: These units have been run and tested at the factory prior to being shipped and do not require any type of break-in.

This unit comes filled with oil from the factory. Check the oil level and add the appropriate amount if necessary.

Q: I have 150 amp service -- can I use a 200 amp transfer switch?
by Eric from Michigan on September 23, 2012

A: A transfer switch is a simple electrical pass through and can be used in a 150A service but some local codes require a matching amperage switch.

You will need to check with your local certified electrician or electrical inspector to verify your local codes.

If you need a 150A switch you can purchase the generator and switch separately.

Q: What size NG line will I need for the 17KW system with a length of 27 feet. I currently only have a 3/4" line to the house. Currently only running a 95% efficient furnace and a gas hot water heater. These both have 1/2 lines running to them. Does the pressure supplied by the Gas company also matter?
by Steve from Michigan on September 11, 2012

A: The 17kW has the following requirements:

Natural Gas:

Min 1" Pipe - 40 feet max
1-1/4" pipe - 190 feet max

Liquid Propane:

Min 1" Pipe - 130 feet max
1-1/4" Pipe - 540 feet max

The pressure supplied to the unit does make a difference also and here are the requirements:

Natural Gas:

5 - 7 Inches of Water Column (0.18 to 0.25 PSI)

Liquid Propane:

10 - 12 Inches of Water Column (0.36 to 0.43 PSI)

Q: I'm going to build a house in the spring of 2013 and I want to have a standby generator installed when the house is built.

What would be the best size generator? I plan on having a geothermal heating/ac system and the house will be all electric.

by Dan from Kansas on August 06, 2012

A: Thank you for visiting Electric Generators Direct. In regards to your question, the generator size is determined by the starting amperage load of the equipment you are planning on powering when you lose power.

The starting amperage load will be much larger than the running load and proper calculations need to be done to properly size a unit.

We recommend having a certified electrician do your wattage calculations as every home is different.

The electrician would calculate with the following formula to properly size the generator which should be sized at 80% of its running capacity to allow enough flexibility to handle large intermittent loads and still keep voltage output at proper levels.

(Starting Amps x Volts = Watts)

Note: Geo-Thermal systems can require a tremendous amount of starting current and all calculations should be done onsite professionally.

by Jim, Product Expert
Q: Where do you connect the 12VDC battery charger?
by Darrell from Texas on July 15, 2012

A: The Generac Guardian home standby generators have a built in battery charger in the controller inside the generator called the battery sentinel.

This charger will only charge the battery when needed so it will not overload the battery and the controller in the generator monitors the battery and will notify you when there is a battery issue.
by Jim, Product Expert
Q: Can I hook up a Generac guardian 5875 to two 200 amp panels? Thanks
by Tamer Bader from Maryland on July 14, 2012

A: Yes, you can connect 2 - 200A switches to the 20kw Generac generator. One switch will be the master and the other will be its slave and do what the master does.

This allows you to utilize both load managers in the switches which gives you more flexibility.

by Jim, Product Expert
Q: What are the dimensions of the composite pad for the 17 Kw generator?
by John Cherry from North Carolina on June 26, 2012

A: You can find the dimensions on the installation drawing under the specs link on the generator page......Here is the link to the drawing.

Q: Does the 200A transfer switch come prewired like the 100amp switch?
by Al Privitera from New York on June 19, 2012

A: The 200A transfer switches are not prewired since they are designed for whole house installations. The connection lengths can vary and the switch can be mounted indoor or outdoor which will alter the length of wiring needed.

Q: I'm looking at a 17 or 20 KW unit for a customer with a 200 amp rated mobilehome with a 125 amp circuit out of the subpanel for the heat pump- she heats with wood, but will the Smart Circuit cut out the heat pump load?
by Chris Hoffman from California on June 11, 2012

A: The transfer switch itself would not accomplish this but Generac does offer their "Auxiliary Transfer Switch Contact Kit" which can shut off a circuit with control wires and is installed on the switching mechanism in the transfer switch.

This allows you to lock out one load such as the heat pump as long as it is on one circuit.

Q: Can you tell me how many inches of water pressure we need for the 183cubic feet per hour. Aslo, what diameter pipe would be required for a 30 foot run?
by Paul Reale, P.E. from Georgia on March 25, 2012

A: 5 to 7 inches of water column for natural gas and per the manufacturers recommendations on a 30 ft run with a 17kW generator you would need to use a 1 inch pipe which has a maximum distance of 40 ft.

If you need to go any farther then you must step-up to a 1-1/4 inch pipe which has a maximum distance of 190 ft.

Q: Dear Jim, I have 2 questions:

Q: I plan to wire the AC thermostat "y" wires to the AC LSM on our new 5875 gen set. I also ordered 4 purchased 4 DLM modules. If there are four restore priorites and there are possible 6 loads shed (2 AC + 4 DLM's), how do the last 2 shed loads get restored? Seems like there should be 6 restore priorities?

Q2: How do I program in the restore priorities? I can not find anything in the installation or operation manual on how to program the gen set contol panel?

I would really appreciate your help on this as I will hopefull have it ready to activate after next weekend.

Thank, Don Pappe

by Don Pappd from Oklahoma on March 21, 2012

A: The first 2 priorities are AC 1 & AC 2 with the other loads being 1 - 4 and the AC loads are looked at first by the load manager which is not programmable.

The system itself will start loads starting at AC1 and stop loads starting at Priority #4 and working backwards so it depends on how you specifically wire the items to the load manager.

Q: Where do I get the installation instructions for the Generac Home Standby Generators?
by T Wanamaker from New York on March 12, 2012

A: The unit comes with the installation instructions or you can find them on the Generac website. The instructions you get without the serial number will be basic.

Generac Manual Search

by Jim, Product Expert
Q: Are two DLM included in the Generac Guardian series 5875 with the purchase of the unit?
by Richard Bull from Pennsylvania on February 12, 2012

A: There are 2 AC connections in the Generac Nexus Smart Switch™ which the thermostat wire is run to. So, when the thermostat calls for air/heat and the generator has enough power it will allow the call to go through, thus allowing the AC unit/units to run.

To connect to 2 AC units the DLM modules are not necessary since the AC unit already has a built in contactor/relay controlled by your thermostat.

The DLM modules are for loads (up to 50A) that do not have any control options such as electric ovens or electric water heaters. The DLM acts as a contactor/relay which the transfer switch tell to open or close (on/off) depending on the available wattage from the generator.

by Jim, Product Expert
Q: Hi Jim,is there any codes to how far from a window the standby generator must be.

Thank You
Frank

by Frank Gelsomino from Connecticut on January 24, 2012

A: NFPA 37 - 4.1.4 Engines Located Outdoors. Engines, and their weatherproof housings if provided, that are installed outdoors shall be located at least 1.5 m (5 ft) from openings in walls and at least 1.5 m (5 ft) from structures having combustible walls. A minimum separation shall not be required where either of the following conditions exist:

(1) The adjacent wall of the structure has a fire resistance rating of at least 1 hour.
(2)*The weatherproof enclosure is constructed of noncombustible materials and has been demonstrated that a fire within the enclosure will not ignite combustible materials outside the enclosure.

The above code is referenced in NFPA 70 - Article 445 Generator Locations.

You do need to reference with your local inspector what the requirements are for your local city codes along with the requirements in your area for noncombustible materials.

Always consult with a certified electrician on all installation procedures and processes.

by Jim, Product Expert
Q: lp tank will be 30' away from unit, what size line do I need and how deep shall it be buried?
by Scott from Connecticut on January 08, 2012

A: You will need a 1 inch line minimum for this distance and burial depth would be based on your local code. Please check with your local plumber or city for burial assistance.

The same applies with burring the fuel line beneath the pad and based on the requirements for the flex fuel line (included) there is really no opportunity or need to bury the line.

by Jim, Product Expert
Q: What is the percentage of THD for the 5871 Standby Generator? Is this figure somewhere in the specs pages or owners manual?
by Ray Lacourse from Massachusetts on January 04, 2012

A: The THD (Total Harmonic Distortion) for the Generac Guardian Series Home Standby Generators is less then 5% which can be found in the Generac spec sheet. The link for the spec sheet is under our specs tab on the product page.

Q: Jim..I recently had a 6053 smart switch delivered (very promptly from you guys, by the way). Does this unit have an automatic battery charger? If so, where is the 12v power source for that. Does it originate in the ATS, or in the generators somehow? I have an electrician installing it, but I'm trying to follow the logic of the circuits myself as well.
by Terry Petrun from Pennsylvania on October 06, 2011

A: Terry,

The battery charger is built into the generartor Nexus controller and when properly wired from the transfer switch it will charge the battery.

by Jim, Product Expert
Q: How far from the house does it need to be
by Dan Healy on September 24, 2011

A: The back side of this generator needs to be at least 18 inches from any surface. Both the right and left side of this machine needs to be at least 36 inches from any surface.
by Jim, Product Expert
Q: What is a composite pad ?
by CHARLES BLYTHE from North Carolina on April 08, 2011

A: The composite pad is a strong, lightweight mounting pad provided to simplify the installation. By including the pad with the generator, installation time and cost is reduced since a concrete base is no longer a requirement.
by Jim, Product Expert
Q: for an average home is a nexus smart circuit versus just a standard 16 ats which one is necessary and why i am looking at buying a 17kw-20 kw generac
by Michael Salvato from Florida on March 31, 2011

A: The Nexus Smart Switch is wired directly to the whole panel and certain large circuits, such as AC or pumps, can be wired in the load shedding capabilities so the generator does not overload. With the 16ckt ATS the generator is only wired to the select 16 circuits which have to be sized correctly for the generators capability and only those circuits are powered when power is lost.

It really depends on the equipment in your home as far as which transfer switch system you want to go with.

Proper sizing of the generator is crucial to the success of any generator installation and requires a good working knowledge of electricity and its characteristics, as well as the varying requirements of the electrical equipment comprising the load. When analyzing the electrical load, consult the manufacturer’s nameplate on each major appliance or piece of equipment to determine its starting and running requirements in terms of watts, amps and voltage. When choosing the generator output select a rating that is approximately 20 to 25% higher than the peak load (for example, if the load is about 8 kilowatts, select a 10 kW generator). A higher rated generator will operate comfortably at approximately 80% of its full capacity and will provide a margin of flexibility if the load increases in the future.
A certified electrician should be consulted for proper sizing and installation of any generator.

by Jim, Product Expert
Q: What size and type of cable will I need for a model 6053? The gen set will be located approx. 50 feet from the main service panel.
by Roger R. Scott from Utah on March 20, 2011

A: This will need to be determined by your installing electrician who will be following all of your city, county and state codes for proper installation.
by Jim, Product Expert
Q: What size NG line do I need for a Model 6053?
by Bob Survil from Texas on March 02, 2011

A: Pipe diameter is based on the distance the generator is from the fuel source. You should consult with a plumber for proper sizing. This unit requires 261,000 BTU/HR.

17 Kw Self-install
Buying my generator from EGD was a very pleasing experience. I chose to install the generator myself during my spare time on weekends and evenings. I took me about 6 weeks. I got everything connected and ready except the last part of connecting to the utility grid.

When the power company came and pulled my meter, I had my install 100% complete in 90 minutes and was back on in 3 hours. Over the next 2 hours, the same day I ran the generator manually and made all the checks advised in the... more

Power Up
When Super Storm Sandy hit, I was on the job repairing and replacing damaged utility poles and equipment for others. I am a linemen and could not be home to help my wife out. She had no electric, water (we have a well), or heat, We purchased a unit large enough to do our whole house. I felt that backup generators were a bit pricey however after deciding to do my own installation the total outlay was worth my peace of mind knowing that while I'm away from home for extended periods of time... more

Just Getting Connected
In my area, I am allowed to apply for a trade permit to perform the electrical work. I contracted my LP-Gas supplier to provide the LP-gas hookup. The gas line is a total of 6.5 pipe feet from an existing regulator mounted on the exterior of my house. The inspector for the gas work rejected the rough-in because the contractor did not use the appropriate gauge for the leak test. (30 psi scale versus 5 psi scale). I did the installation myself with help from the local power company and a friend who retired from the power company. Having been in the piano business for many years, the weight of the unit didn't present any real challenge.

All went pretty well. The unit is now in service and we have used it for several hours to power the entire house. We are quite pleased with this generator. However, it is a lot louder than I anticipated.I would like to have had better information on the type of wire to... more

I ordered the generator pretty much knowing what I needed, but I was pleasantly surprised at the high level of customer service that I received.

Your generator guy went over the whole installation with me and gave me a shipping date, which then had my unit arrive exactly on time. The installation went smoothly and the unit works as specified.

I am very happy with this purchase and Power Equipment Direct for their high quality website and employees.
