Q: Hi Jim, do I need the activation code to get generator running or is it simply part of registration process? by Mark from New Jersey on January 07, 2013
A: It is basically part of the registration process. When you register the unit either online via the Generac website or by calling the number provided with the generator they will give you the activation code.
Without the activation code the unit will not run in automatic mode.
Q: If the distance from the transfer switch to the generator far exceeds the 32 ft. prepackaged configuration, would I order a prepackaged unit then eliminate the 32' shielded cable and replace with my own? What is the gauge of the power wires in the 32' cable? by Dan Vecchio from New Jersey on December 22, 2012
A: The indoor run from the switch to the wall where you go out to the generator is 30 feet and the run from the switch to your electrical panel is 2 feet. The generator also has an outdoor run of 5 feet connected to the back of the generator along with an outdoor connection box to connect the 30 foot length to where you penetrate the wall.
Per Generac you can add an additional maximum of 15 feet to any of the 3 lengths if needed.
The control wires are 14 gauge, the 2 hots and neutral are #6 and the ground is #8.
Q: I have a 100 amp breaker panel in my home, wish to purchase the 10K model, but would like the "smart switch" option vs. having to wire to specific circuits. Is that possible? by John Johnson from Michigan on December 21, 2012
A: Generac does not offer a prepacked 10kW with the 100A Nexus switch so you would have to purchase each item individually.
Q: I am looking at a 10kw gen I had a few questions:
1. what are the gauges of the cable on the 30' run and how many? 2. does the system include an exterior disconnection box? 3. Is the connection between the disconnection box and the 10KW included?
by Juan Salcedo from Pennsylvania on December 11, 2012
A: The 30 ft run is indoor only and has 14 gauge control wires, #8 Ground and #6 Neutral and Hot wires.
You can only add an additional 15 ft maximum to the existing run for a max total of 50 feet from switch to generator.
The generator does include a 5 ft whip with an outdoor connection box to connect the 30 ft whip to.
Q: What is the code for the Generac Guardian 5871-10KW by Troy Hebert from Louisiana on October 12, 2012
A: If you are looking for the activation code for the generator you will need to go to the Generac website and register the product for the activation code.
Q: My 500 gal propane tank has a two stage regulator on it . Do I need another regulator at the the generator? by Michael Schwartz from New York on October 07, 2012
A: A regulator may be required if the pressure exceeds the generators required 10 to 12 inches of water column (0.36 - 0.43 psi)
Q: Are mounting bolts for concrete install included in unit packaging? by Walter from South Carolina on October 06, 2012
A: Generac does not provide the concrete mounting bolts with the generator because it is optional to permanently mount it to concrete. by Jim, Product Expert
Q: Does the 5870 construction (enclosure make up) meet NFPA 37 condition 2 requirement? by Bob from New Jersey on October 02, 2012
A: Subsection 4.1.4 of NFPA 37 reads as follows:
“4.1.4 Engines Located Outdoors. Engines, and their weatherproof housings if provided, that are installed outdoors shall be located at least 1.5 m (5 ft) from openings in walls and at least 1.5 m (5 ft) from structures having combustible walls. A minimum separation shall not be required where the following conditions exist:
(1) The adjacent wall of the structure has a fire resistance rating of at least 1 hour. (2)* The weatherproof enclosure is constructed of noncombustible materials and it has been demonstrated that a fire within the enclosure will not ignite combustible materials outside the enclosure.”
A4.1.4 (2) Means of demonstrating compliance are by means of full scale fire test or by calculation procedures. Because of the limited spaces that are frequently available for installation, it has become apparent that exception (2) would be beneficial for many residential and commercial installations. With that in mind, the manufacturer contracted with an independent testing laboratory to run full scale fire tests to assure that the enclosure would not ignite combustible materials outside the enclosure.
Per Generac Owner's Manual (All 8, 10, 14, 17 & 20kW Air Cooled Automatic Standby Generator):
The criteria was to determine the worst case fire scenario within the generator and to determine the ignitability of items outside the engine enclosure at various distances. The enclosure is constructed of non-combustible materials and the results and conclusions from the independent testing lab indicated that any fire within the generator enclosure would not pose any ignition risk to nearby combustibles or structures, with or without fire service personnel response.
Based on this testing and the requirements of NFPA 37, Sec 4.1.4, the guidelines for installation of the generators listed above are changed to 18 inches (457mm) from the back side of the generator to a stationary wall or building. For adequate maintenance and airflow clearance, the area above the generator should be at least 4 feet with a minimum of 3 feet at the front and ends of the enclosure. This would include trees, shrubs and vegetation that could obstruct airflow. See the diagram on the installation drawing within the owner’s manual on under the specs link for details.
Generator exhaust contains DEADLY carbon monoxide gas. This dangerous gas can cause unconsciousness or death. Do not place the unit near windows, doors, fresh air intakes (furnaces, etc.) or any openings in the building or structure, including windows and doors of an attached garage.
Q: I have received my 20Kw Generac 5875. Was it shipped with oil or do I need to add oil before i start it up? Or is it just a break in oil (the oil on the dip stickis very light) that needs to be removed and filled with what I will be using in this area? Shipment was timely and arrived n excellent condition. by Larry from Washington on September 30, 2012
A: These units have been run and tested at the factory prior to being shipped and do not require any type of break-in.
This unit comes filled with oil from the factory. Check the oil level and add the appropriate amount if necessary.
Q: Where do you connect the 12VDC battery charger? by Darrell from Texas on July 15, 2012
A: The Generac Guardian home standby generators have a built in battery charger in the controller inside the generator called the battery sentinel.
This charger will only charge the battery when needed so it will not overload the battery and the controller in the generator monitors the battery and will notify you when there is a battery issue. by Jim, Product Expert
Q: With the recent power outages that occurred in my area it becomes apparent that a standby generator may need to run contiuosly for up to a week. This might happen with ambient temperatures exceeding 100 degrees F. Will the air cooled models such as the GuardianSeries 5871 be able to do this? by Jim Hochgesang from West Virginia on July 12, 2012
A: These units have been tested at extreme temperatures and will run to suit your needs. However, when these generators need to run for extended amounts of time you will need to check the oil frequently and fill as necessary. This keeps the unit in good mechanical condition and allows the unit to cool for a time when you are doing the maintenance.
Q: How do I know how the kw size I need for my 3-bedroom 2-bath with central air double wide, and how much total cost if installed. by David Wambaugh from Michigan on July 06, 2012
A: David, the best way to size your generator is to identify which circuits in your main electrical panel that you want powered during an outage.
If you just input your circuits into our calculator, it will instantly recommend a standby generator for your home.
Q: Do the generators have a built in propane regulator for the Generac 8 and or 10kw models? by Curtis Gibson from Virginia on July 03, 2012
A: They do have their own propane regulator but if you are supplying too much service a separate exterior regulator is required. The one in the unit is not adjustable.
Q: What size breaker do I need for the main panel for a Generac model 5870? by Terry from Ohio on May 31, 2012
A: You will need a 40A double pole breaker for the 8kW Essential Circuit model and all other Essential Circuit models (10-17kW) require a 70A double pole breaker.
Q: Jim: If the steel brackets that hold the # 57811 Generac 10 KW onto the shipping pallet are used to hold the unit down to the concrete pad. How do you use the Black Plugs to fill the holes after installation of these brackets by Jim from Florida on April 18, 2012
A: Actually, Generac does not recommend using them anymore. On the installation drawing they show anchor points inside the unit to mount it to a concrete pad....see link for details.....
Q: Where do I get the installation instructions for the Generac Home Standby Generators? by T Wanamaker from New York on March 12, 2012
A: The unit comes with the installation instructions or you can find them on the Generac website. The instructions you get without the serial number will be basic.
Q: If I need more wire than the 30 feet supplied, can I splice what ever i need onto it? Also, are the circuit breakers standard ones if i ever need to replace one, or do i have to buy them from Generac? by Stanley Zydel from New York on February 10, 2012
A: The maximum length you can add is 15 feet as long as local code permits adding length (some do not). If you need to go beyond this length then the entire run of wiring needs to be changed because of the wire sizes/gauge.
Generac typically uses Siemens breakers in their switches which allows for replacement to be easy.
Please keep in mind that you cannot put larger amperage breakers in to replace smaller amperage breakers.
Please always consult with a certified electrician for proper installation and wiring.
Q: Hi Jim,is there any codes to how far from a window the standby generator must be.
Thank You Frank by Frank Gelsomino from Connecticut on January 24, 2012
A: NFPA 37 - 4.1.4 Engines Located Outdoors. Engines, and their weatherproof housings if provided, that are installed outdoors shall be located at least 1.5 m (5 ft) from openings in walls and at least 1.5 m (5 ft) from structures having combustible walls. A minimum separation shall not be required where either of the following conditions exist:
(1) The adjacent wall of the structure has a fire resistance rating of at least 1 hour. (2)*The weatherproof enclosure is constructed of noncombustible materials and has been demonstrated that a fire within the enclosure will not ignite combustible materials outside the enclosure.
The above code is referenced in NFPA 70 - Article 445 Generator Locations.
You do need to reference with your local inspector what the requirements are for your local city codes along with the requirements in your area for noncombustible materials.
Always consult with a certified electrician on all installation procedures and processes.
Q: What is the percentage of THD for the 5871 Standby Generator? Is this figure somewhere in the specs pages or owners manual? by Ray Lacourse from Massachusetts on January 04, 2012
A: The THD (Total Harmonic Distortion) for the Generac Guardian Series Home Standby Generators is less then 5% which can be found in the Generac spec sheet. The link for the spec sheet is under our specs tab on the product page.
Q: Concerning transfer switch circuits. I don't need the 40a 2 pole breaker or the 30 amp 2 pole. But could use 2-20amp 2 pole breakers. Could also use 6-20 amp single pole breakers and 2-15's. Can we make changes to the circuit configurations as long as they don't exceed overall rating? Looking at the Model 5871. by Kent Reeser from Illinois on June 04, 2011
A: The pre-wired automatic transfer switches can be modified in the field as long as the internal wiring is changed to the appropriate amperage that gets installed.
Q: What is a composite pad ? by CHARLES BLYTHE from North Carolina on April 08, 2011
A: The composite pad is a strong, lightweight mounting pad provided to simplify the installation. By including the pad with the generator, installation time and cost is reduced since a concrete base is no longer a requirement. by Jim, Product Expert
Q: Hello Jim, do you have, or can you recommend stand-by generator installers for the Houston, Texas area? We are in the N.W. Houston area. by David Reece from Texas on February 13, 2011
A: Since we do not get involved in the installation process and since we ship all over the continental US we do not have a list of installers to provide. You can contact a local Generac dealer who may do installations at a reasonable price and will provide you with the best installation knowledge. You do not necessarily have to purchase a Generac generator from them to utilize their installation and they would be your resource for maintenance and warranty repairs.
Q: How far does a generator has to be from my house? by Jim from Massachusetts on February 04, 2011
A: The manufacturer recommends the back side of the unit to be set no less then 18 inches from any non-combustible surface and the sides of the unit need at least 36 inches for proper intake and exhaust.
Note: It is recommended to check with your city, county and state codes as they may differ from the manufacturers recommendations.
Q: Is this generator (Model 5884) a good choice for off grid solar system backup. 14kw not essential circuit? by Avery Edwards from Colorado on January 25, 2011
A: The Generac 5884 generator is specifically designed for emergency backup only and will not be warranted in an off-the-grid application.
Generac did come out with a new model specifically designed for off-the-grid and solar applications.
Q: What size battery do I need? by James Fritch from Pennsylvania on January 25, 2011
A: The battery is a Group 26R with 525 cold cranking amps - which is often difficult to find locally.
However, don't get too caught up in the specs. We already sized the battery for this model.
Click on the "Add 12V Start Battery" box when ordering.
The current battery price is listed below the generator pricing by the check box.
We don't sell the batteries individually because they are hazardous materials that must ship via freight. If you bought one individually, it would cost more to ship than the battery is worth.
Since this generator is already shipping via semi-truck, we shrink wrap them together, and the battery tags along for the ride.
Q: What kind of oil comes in the generator, and when it is time to change it? Can I run Mobile 1 Synthetic 5W30 year round in central Oklahoma? by Ron Hopper from Oklahoma on January 24, 2011
A: The Generac standby generators are shipped with 5W30 oil in them and Generac does give the option to use 5W30 Synthetic in needed. The owner's manual covers all oil options and temperature ranges. Oil changes are determined by use and maintenance is also covered in the manual.
Q: Can this generator be anchored to the slab? If so, can you provide an anchor bolt layout by Gregg Deemer from Texas on January 21, 2011
A: Generac's model 5885, as with all of their standby generators, are anchored to the pallet at all 4 corners with special anchors which can be used to anchor the unit directly to your concrete base using concrete bolts. by Jim, Product Expert
Q: Jim, We're interested in this Generac model 5870 and we were wondering under full load what size LP tank capacity should we consider and approximately how much run time could we expect. This will be used in a home application with backup to HVAC needs, a light circuit, sump pump refrigerator /freezer. 3,000 sq ft home. I know that there are many variables and I probably need to get you more information, however, I thought that this would be a good start. Thanks, Mike by Mike Mitrione from New Jersey on January 18, 2011
A: Proper sizing of the generator is to size it to 80% of the generators full capacity. A higher rated generator will operate comfortably at approximately 80% of its full capacity and will provide a margin of flexibility if the load increases in the future. So if your need is 8kW then you should look at a 10kW standby generator. Tank size is based on how much run time you want available when you lose power. The fuel usage is listed in the owner's manual which you can find our our website under the specs tab for each model. Normally a 100-Gal. tank or larger is best suited. Jim's Recommendation
This 10 kilowatt version is powerful enough to run a small home, including a small (2.5 Ton) central air conditioner. If you live in the northern states or don't mind sweating during a summer power outage, the 10 kilowatt version is a great option for you.
The step up from the 8kW version is rather dramatic – although not necessarily in just power output. The model 5871 features a 530cc V-Twin engine for smoother operation and comes with a total of 12 pre-wired circuits in the transfer switch. If you want to run more than the basics, this is a good machine to consider.
The NEXUS series digital controller allows for some really neat accessories. Wireless monitors are offered in 2 styles, basic status alerts or the full-blown generator controller display replicated inside your home.

10K Generac Guardian Generator Installation
Without a lot of details,I can say that the installation of the unit went smoothly with an Electrician taking the lead with the support of a Plumber that he works with on many other installations. The unit was delivered in a timely manner and was taken to the site by the Driver of the delivery truck. I opted for the delivery truck to have a tail gate that lowers the unit to the ground, this was a $50 additional charge but was well worth it to eliminate the anxiety of worrying how I was going to get the unit back to my house 125 ft away.
At this point ,it has only been 3 wks since the installation and we have not had any weather problems to require it to go on. But this is what I expected ,that once I buy the unit, it will be my insurance policy that we won't have any more storms. The Generac unit has a very good record of Quality and reliability and the purchase price was very attractive when purchased directly from Electric Generators Direct instead of having the electrician order it. There was no problem with this arrangement and my electrician agreed that this would be a cost effective way to do this and that he could not match the unit cost. All in all, I am very satisfied with the project that cost me total around $5800. Good Luck on your installation

Installer Review
Hi, this is my 4th generator that I have installed. I like them a lot and recommend them to everyone who is looking. The one issue that I have is the length of the cable you supply for the generator connection. I wish that you offered some different length for this. A lot of these installations are on large homes or the customer wants to get them away from their homes. Other then that one issue, I have no other problem. I am going to install one in my own home in the near future. Thanks again, and great product.

As Advertised
I purchased the 5871 10 KW Generac generator with the 100 Amp 12 Ckt Auto transfer switch. Also bought the cold weather kit. It was installed by a local Generac dealer.
I had to have a new service entrance and meter box installed. It was such a pleasure to shut off the main breaker and let the power company do their work. The generator had to run for over 4 hours during installation, inspection and so on. The generator and transfer switch worked perfectly. I was impressed. GREAT PRODUCT!

I live in the Md-DC-Va area and occasionally there are power failures. Last year the power was out for eight (8) days. I lost all food in two (2) in the freezers and a fridge. I purchased the Generac 10K unit several weeks ago to prevent the possibility of being without power again. The technician installing the unit experienced no problems . The unit self test's on schedule every week on time and I have no doubt that it will perform its backup power duties as advertised.

Hi I'm Eddie,
I have had a portable generator for years.
It takes time to dig out after being stored.
Even with fuel stabilizer I hoped 😓
It would start like clock work.😡
I had my first portable start in hurricane sandy.
The generator would run some and stop because of water in gas
and dumping fuel into oil crank case.
I purchased a new portable one that gave me time
to make the repairs and then help others.
I now have the 5871😁 and two portable standbys to help the others.
This is a great buy. I just installed my unit on 12/16/12, before winter and
the next storm.
I have my unit set at 10kw on auto and it is ready
even when I am not home. I told my neighbor three houses
down about it and he purchased one too.
Thank you Generac !😄

Prepared Before Hurricane Sandy
I installed the Generac 5871 10kW generated 2 months prior to Hurricane Sandy. I lost power during the Hurricane for 6 days and then lost power again for 4 days during the Nor'easter.
During the outages, generator power came back on seamlessly. While other people were scrambling to find gasoline powered generators and/or find gasoline for their portable generators, I did not have to do a thing.
I ran most of my house and even provided power to neighbors. People were heating their homes with gas fireplaces if they were lucky enough to have one & I was running 2 zones of heat.
It has already paid for itself after one use.

From the dumbest guy on the block to the smartest in one storm!
I live in a flood-prone Northern Jersey town, as seen on TV! After being spared by Hurricanes Irene & Lee last year I purchased the Generac 5871 and had it installed in March of 2012. I seemed overly prepared until "Frankenstorm " came along 2 weeks ago- leveling trees, poles, power & the NJ shore, Staten Island & Long Island.
This one was for real, folks.
The storm hit on a Monday & power was out by 3 PM. Being one of the lucky ones I had power return on Thursday night. Others are still two weeks later w/o power, some have no homes.
My Generac started up 10 SECONDS after power dropped out. Not needing it to run 24/7 I manually shut it down at night. It's a quiet unit, but it's still not silent! My neighbors did not mind, considering the situation.
It ran flawlessly. I had gotten the maintenance kit the week before because I wanted to change the oil & filter before winter and because you want to change it after the first 10 hours.
REMEMBER IT STARTS AUTOMATICALLY FOR 12 MINUTES TO CHECK THE SYSTEM, ONCE A WEEK.
Everything you need except oil comes with the kit and you won't find it for less. The oil change is simple and I did it "after the storm" within 30 minutes on Wednesday.
The generator, when ordered, arrived within days. It was in stock and the same for the kit.
EGD is a great company... I couldn't be happier.

I installed a 10KW Standby Generator 6 months ago. It started perfectly every week for the exercise cycle.
During the first power outage due to Hurricane Sandy the generator failed to start. I got no joy with tech support from Generac; I had to figure it out on my own.
The solution was to tape off the intake grills because high winds were creating the problem. I can't believe a standby generator would be designed in such a way that it could be rendered disabled by high winds. I solved the problem with duct tape.
How hard would it be for Generac to put a proper baffle in place?
EGD RESPONDS: Standby generators are designed to suit a wide variety of circumstances; the ventilation may be necessary to keep the unit cool during hot weather.
You may want to add a wind break to your mounting location once the storm has passed, so the generator can get the air circulation it needs.

Very well satisfied
This is a great generator and easy installation. The wiring was better than perfect in the transfer switch and the manuals for installation were real easy to follow.

Couldn't do without it
We moved from NY to MS, where we would lose power often. There are very bad storms, and tornadoes here.
My Generac was easy to install, and very reliable. It comes on by itself, and goes off when the power comes back. The generator
runs by itself for 10 mins. to exercise.
I couldn't do without it!!

When we got hit with Irene we swore we would get a generator. I surfed the web and found several sites offering generators, but after the whole ordeal we kind of put it off. Then came the October snow storm which made us make this a priority. Still dealing with mold and mess from Irene we were so unprepared for snow. Our daughter just gave birth to her second daughter on the Wednesday before the Saturday snow storm. She lost power at her apartment and we lost it at our house.
She and her husband,3 year old and 3 day old came to stay with us because we had a fireplace to try to keep us warm. It was so scary with a newborn. That was it for us!!! On Monday, my husband called Electric Generators Direct and some other companies. Others didn't return our calls ever. But Electric Generators Direct were so wonderful!!!! They fully explained everything to him, walked him through the whole process and told him which would be our best generator for our needs.
The price was the best compared to all the rest. The generator arrived the next week. Even the truck driver was very pleasant and helpful. He suggested that we not leave the generator in our driveway close to the house because it could get stolen. Never even thought about that since we have a long driveway, a Pit Bull , Belgium Shepherd and a nice neighborhood. So he put it under our carport out of sight. My neighbor is an electrician and he installed the generator and was impressed with it.
That was in the beginning of November of 2011 and we feel so secure knowing we'll never be without heat and running water and all the necessities again. Funny thing, since we got the generator we haven't lost power yet, which is fine with us. We have given this website out to so many people because of our wonderful experience. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!! Stephanie and Jay

New Home
Our home was blown away in the April 27 2011 tornados in North Alabama. We had family that took us in until we got a FEMA trailer. We were without power for almost 2 weeks, all food grilled, all clothes worn 2 or 3 days and every shower was in cold water. My mom lives with us and she is on oxygen so she had to live away from us where someone had power.
We rebuilt on the same spot but this time we used a tankless gas water heater, we have fire logs as a backup heat and we added the natural gas generator. This generator will power 3/4 of our home. We never have to worry about being without power again!! During the power outtage I was able to borrow a gasoline generator but it used a lot of gas and it was hard to find a station that had power to pump gas and then they would only let you have 10 gallons at a time. 10 gallons would last 30 hours then I would have to drive 50 miles each way to get more gas, it was costing me a fortune and wasting a lot of time that I needed to be cleaning up the mess at home.
I hope we never have to use it but it sure is nice knowing it is there and it is all automatic, I dont have to try to explain to my wife or kids where to plug up, what breaker to cut off or how to crank a gas generator that has been sitting there all year.

Staandby Generator
Electric Generators Direct was a very easy company to deal with. I received the generator 4 days after I ordered it. The 10 KW was large enough for me to connect my entire home to it as my house is total gas. It took me one day to pour a pad. 2nd day I mounted the EZ-switch and then had to do some other things other than the gen. The 3rd day I wired and set the unit up. I love the peace-of-mind it gives my wife and me. I would recommend this company to anyone.

"In Standby Mode"
I have not needed to use the generator yet. I hear it kick on and exercise weekly, which is a good sign. Although it has not run yet in a power outage, I don't worry about the threat of power loss any longer. It is reassuring to know that when and if the power goes out I will not be scrambling to bring the kids to my in-laws, trying to get my portable generator started in the dark, throwing out food due to the loss of the refrigerator/freezer and the worst worry of all is the basement flooding out because there is no power to operate the 2 sump pumps in the basement. Thanks Generac for one less major worry in life !

Very Professional Sales, Support, & Delivery
This unit is just right for my application (essential circuits plus a few extras). It will power 3 sump pumps, all residential telecommunications, entertainment and security systems, bedroom lights, kitchen appliances, a few outlets and lights around the house. Installation was done by a professional electrician, so I can only say it was done to local codes and it went fairly quickly. Activation and start up was also quick. The functionality is effortless, once it's set up just leave it alone until it's time for maintenance.
If your home has critical electrical requirements, and you don't want to run into big natural gas or LP gas fuel bills if the unit has to be on for several days, and if you really can live without many of your electrical devices, and if you don't want the unit to sound like an industrial park, this is an excellent choice. I live in the northeast, and extremes of hot and cold are not really an issue (yet). After I have had it in operation a few years, I'll try to post another review. For now, it was the right unit for the job and at the right price.

No More Blackouts!
We live in the middle of a heavily wooded ares in Bucks County Pa. We frequently lose power for a few hours when ever there is a storm. The last two times we lost power, hurricane Irene and the Halloween snowstorm we were out for 5 days each time. We live in a total electric house with a well. No power means no water, no flushing, no lights, no phone, no Internet, no lap top and a phone that needs recharging, and no heat except for the fireplace. It will not happen again. I searched locally and online and found electric generators direct. Best price, free shipping and no tax! Generator arrived in about two weeks. Bring on the snow!

Made The Right Decision
My generator did the job for us when the October snowstorm hit the northeast. lines down, trees down, a real mess! I recommended it to my son who plans to order the same one for his new home. Great to do business with you.

10 KW
I installed the generator myself with little effort. Called an Elite Dealer in the area to conduct a start up and test. This went well, unit checked out, and all the circuits on the transfer switch operated nicely.

Hurricane Irene
I just got power back after 54 hours of downtime from Irene. I was the only house with power those 2+ days and since we all have septic and wells, I offered showers and water to the neighbors. My sump pump worked overtime and I didn't flood. Having a standby generator was the best idea.
This is an internal combustion engine. It makes noise. You will hear it running. It won't make your ears bleed, but you will hear it drone and it can be annoying overnight. Hey, turn it off if the noise bothers you. It's much quieter than a lawnmower and it saved my house and made my family comfortable. I recommend generators to all my friends and family, especially to those bailing water out of their houses.

Stress Relief
I purchased a Generac 5871 after years of worry over my sump pump, which runs like crazy in the spring or after a very heavy rain fall. I had a portable generator for years, but one needs to be at home and available to pull it out and hook it up which translates into a lot of stress if one is out of town during a power outage. I am very happy with our new Generac, it fired right up on schedule for it's weekly test run this morning. Kris at Electric Generators Direct was very helpful and made our transaction very smooth. Highly recommend your company and products!!

Good buying experience -- recommend the company
I haven't had the generator long enough to fully evaluate it (and probably won't until the first time I actually need it), but I can attest to the following:
* The sales rep I dealt with was knowledgeable and bent over backwards to ensure alternative arrangements for delivery (when it was clear that the 18-wheeler wouldn't be able to navigate my driveway).
* Everything that was ordered arrived on the day that it was supposed and arrived in good shape (i.e., well packed).
* I've confirmed that the price I paid was at the bottom end of the range of availability for other vendors.
In short, this was a totally positive buying experience, from beginning to end. I would recommend Electric Generators Direct to others.

My sump pump failed over the early spring floods and that made me paranoid about future power failures. This unit has now given me piece of mind.
I originally ordered this unit from different dealer who promised, but never managed to ship the unit. After 1 month of runaround, I canceled that order and bought the unit from EGD.
I recv'd the unit within 48 hours after my order was confirmed. I sure wish I had come here first.
The unit is noisy, but maybe it is quiet compared to other generators. It also has a pretty large foot print. Be aware of this. Just as a installation idea for regular Joes, my electrician squared off an area using 2x4s and then just filled that area in with stone. Simple, easy bed to place the unit on.
I'm very happy with the unit and EGD. Thanks!

5871 Awesome
Just installed this unit for a customer of ours. Pretty easy installation. Very happy with the whole process. I paid the extra $50 for the priority shipping and was well worth it. Also, purchased a battery. I am glad I did, because I would have forgot that the unit does not come with one.
It was shipped out within hours of placing the order and got a call from the local shipping service within two days. I actually had to hold them off. Really did not expect them to be so prompt. I am glad that I asked them for a smaller truck for delivery because they were going to deliver it on an 18 Wheel truck which would not fit down our street.
The driver was awesome and even helped us get it into the garage. We just fired up the unit today without a hitch. Only and I mean only complaint, I wish that the activation codes needed were more easily available. It should be instant on the website or just a little more user friendly.
Overall, excellent experience and will only use Electric Generators Direct from now on. I could have used others, but the previous reviews convinced me to use them. Glad I did!

Peace Of Mind
I purchased this for my home as I live in a remote area and lose power on occasion.
The purchase was easy, the price was very good and delivery was prompt and without issue. My electrician installed it during recent renovations to the home.
The generator works very well and with easy programming, self test weekly. It has brought much peace of mind to both my wife and I.

10kw Generac Generator
Good price, good product, very fast delivery. Completely satisfied with everything.
Only thing that I feel would make this a perfect setup is make the power wires that comes from the transfer switch to the main electrical panel longer. 2ft of conduit makes it very difficult to bend into the main panel.
EGD: The ATS with the 2’ conduit should be installed as close as possible to the main panel
