Q: I have a 15,000 watt generac gasoline generator, is a natural gas conversion kit avaveibel ?
is a permanent enclosier avalible ?

by Gene Tedder from Florida on December 18, 2013

A: Thanks for your inquiry.....Generator manufacturers do not offer conversion kits or permanent enclosures for portable generators.

We at Power Equipment Direct do not recommend converting your gasoline portable generator to an alternative fuel and doing so will void the manufacturer’s warranty and may cause damage to the generator itself. These conversions are not recommended by any of the generator manufacturers.

Gasoline has an Ignition Point of 475–536 °F. When a generator is manufactured to run solely on gasoline these temperatures are taken into consideration and the engine components are made to handle these temperatures.

Propane (LP) has an Ignition Point of 920-1020°F and Natural Gas (NG) has an Ignition Point of 900–1500°F. These higher temperatures will cause damage over time on any “gas only” powered engine.

The following guidelines cover Honda engines (Also applies to other engine manufacturers) modified to run on fuels other than the one for which they were designed, such as converting an engine to run on propane (LP) or natural gas (NG).

• Honda gasoline engines are certified to operate on unleaded fuel with a pump octane rating of 86 or higher, containing no more than 10% ethanol (E10).

• Any change to the original configuration of a certified Honda engine is a potential violation of the Clean Air Act prohibition against tampering (40 CFR §1068.101(b)(1)). The tampering prohibition is important because poorly designed and installed modifications can increase emissions.

• The Clean Air Act prohibits anyone from removing or rendering inoperative any device or design element installed on engines in compliance with regulations. These actions are considered tampering, which carries a civil penalty up to $37,500 for each engine or equipment in violation.

• Engines converted by a third party (OEM, dealer, converter, etc.) to run on a different fuel type must be recertified with the EPA on the new fuel to comply with applicable emission standards. The third party must recertify under a new family and notify Honda to not include the modified engines in the original family.

• Converted engines to be sold for use in California must meet CARB requirements and the converter must obtain approval from CARB. EPA certificates or tampering exemptions will not satisfy the requirement for CARB certification.

• Once certified, the third party must remove the Honda emission control label and apply a compliant emission control label for the new fuel indicating the new certifying manufacturer. Honda will no longer assume any responsibility as the certifying manufacturer.

• The Honda Distributor's Limited Warranty does not extend to parts affected or damaged by the conversion to or use of fuel other than the fuel for which the engine was originally designed.

• Honda offers V-twin engines specifically designed and certified for use in LP/NG applications. The engines incorporate special design features that address the higher combustion temperatures and reduced lubrication to the valve guide area (since it is a dry fuel, not liquid). Please contact your sales representative or distributor for additional information.

Disclaimer: The guidance provided is intended for Honda dealer/distributor informational purposes only and not for the purpose of providing legal advice. You must contact the appropriate certifying agencies if you require information on how regulations apply to your specific application.

Q: With this generator (Generac GP17500E) and supplied transfer switch, in the even of a power failure, the unit will start automatically? Or, the transfer occurs automatically, but the unit needs to start manually. Similarly when power is restored, the unit needs to be shut down manually?
by Frank from New Jersey on May 04, 2013

A: This is a completely manual system as there are no options for automatic start/stop with portable generators since they do not offer a permanent fuel source or specific generator control systems.

by Mike, Product Expert
Q: Do you have a wireing diagram for the engine? It has a two wire low oil switch, I need to know where the wires go.
by Bruce from Nebraska on March 17, 2013

A: You can access all of the schematics and manuals via the Generac website using your units serial number....

Generac Manual Search

by Mike, Product Expert
Q: I'm interested in the Generac GP17500E.
1. When the generator is powering the house during a blackout, how do you know when the power is restored?
2. What is the yearly maintainance of it?
3. If it breaks down how and where can I get it serviced?

by Steve Lo from Connecticut on February 02, 2013

A: When using the generator properly connected to the included transfer switch the circuits in the switch are properly disconnected from the utility service. So, when your utility service returns the other circuits in your electrical panel are going to be powered while the generator circuits are safely disconnected from them. When your other lights and appliances come back on you will know.

The maintenance is listed in the owner's manual available on the site and comes with the unit. Typically it will be oil changes, oil filter changes, air filter changes and spark plug changes. You will have a maintenance schedule to follow based on the usage time of the unit.

All service is performed by your local manufacturers service dealer who handles all warranty and general service on the generators. You can find on via the following link....

Terrible Instructions
Highly rated generator but horrible directions, no videos at the generac web site or on YouTube. This Generator is over 400 lbs, you can't just lift up one side and throw a wheel on it and the directions need to very clear, ikea has better directions!

Good Investment
I started a research on portable generators, I came across several quality generators but the one that capture my attention was the Generac GP17500E , no more breakers to turn off just plug it in and relax, if you are thinking about investing in a portable generator this is the one you want to have home, and don't forget to buy the kit you will save yourself a nice piece of change.

Quality For Your Dollar
I looked all over the internet and local stores for a generator of this power, quality and price. What a find! Got all three with this purchase. I'm so glad I bought it and my friends can't believe the value. I've been a general contractor for 35 years and I've owned a few generators in my life, this by far is the best that I've owned.
Pros: Easy To Use, Quiet, Price, I'd Buy It Again

A Lot Of Generator, In Quality, Features, & Weight
With two geothermal heat pumps, as well as the unwillingness to spend $11,000 on a whole-house standby generator, this 400+pound monster was exactly what we needed. While it was a bit of a challenge to get it off the pallet and onto the (provided) wheels, once that was done I was able to wheel it around with a a fair amount of effort, but completely on my own. Once out of the box, I connected the battery, added gas and oil, and it started up just fine with no hassle. Generac even include a... more

New Generac 17,500 Watt Portable Generator
Recently received my 17,500 watt Generac generator. Generator was received in perfect condition with all parts present. Unit is very heavy and large. Was able to assemble myself and move myself although it is cumbersome to transport. I am considering going to the trouble of mounting a castor wheel on the rear of the frame so unit does not have to be picked up to move. Only consideration would be if using on incline.

Unit comes with oil, 2 oil filters, Stable fuel treatment, paper towel and... more

"Web site provides product features as well as product manuals which allowed me to make a complete, informed decision. Price was the same or better than any other suppliers, free standard shipping and no tax. Also product was shipped the following day and was delivered 6 days later which included a weekend and New Years Day. I was totally impressed! Lastly, I payed the additional cost for lift gate delivery knowing the ship weight was close to 500lbs. The delivery was on time and the truck driver was very pleasant. He told me he would placed the unit any place of my choice which he did. Totally satisfied. I would highly recommend Electric Generators Direct to anyone considering purchasing a product they sell."

Great Deal
Perfect for our situation. Was looking for a backup power source for our nasty Ohio winters, especially during outages occurring as a result of ice storms. Shopped around quite a bit and settled on this unit. We don't have a lot of outages and due to expense of installation and operation, moved away from a fixed outside propane powered generator since we use propane for our backup heat source. This unit powers our heat pump and hot water tank easily along with everything else needed to stay... more

Nice Stuff
The biggest portable generator allowed by the "Condo Commandos" as far as HOAs go. Every Generator must be portable to be approved by the Condo Associations. This unit is perfect for the application and has prompted many owners to purchase this unit to satisfy the powers that be. Thanks Generac.
