Q: Just received Model 9010400 in good order. When facing the engine I see TWO yellow plugs. The literature says the RIGHT one is the oil fill (thanks Briggs and Stratton for making it so accessible - not), but what is the LEFT one for? Nothing in chipper or B&S literature about that one. Thanks.
by Louis Benjamin from New York on July 21, 2015

A: Louis,

Both plugs are likely oil fills. Companies typically make an engine with two access points for oil. This way the engine may be used on all different equipment in many different positions that will block access to one of the oil ports. You may contact Briggs (800) 743-4115 with your engine model and serial number and they will verify this for your specific engine.

Q: why is the earthquake Model 9010400 not on your good, better or best list?
what do you use to push the leaves down into the hopper?

by Ron Marble from Arizona on February 02, 2014

A: Ron - you would use a larger piece of material (branch or limb) that is being chipped to push leaves and other material into the hopper. You do not want to use a 2x4, broom handle, etc.

The Earthquake 9010400 comes in as our "Better" option for medium sized chipper shredders. What gives this machine this rating is not only its quality, but the power it puts out compared to other chipper shredders in this class.

The 305cc Briggs & Stratton engine on the 9010400 really packs a punch and can make short work of just about any lawn debris and branches 3-inches and smaller you may have. This power matched with the Earthquakes patented dual triangular hammer design... more

Great Choice
Spent weeks researching brands and models. Selected this one with the bigger engine for our big yard with lots of prunings. The local big box stores couldn't order it. Arrived within a week in perfect shape. Put in the included oil(pay attention to the specs-not normal car oil). Added gas and it fired up on the first half pull. Amazing. Shredded our last 2 years of branches in about 4 hours.

Never died or clogged. Harder to start when hot. A hot engine has more friction than a cold one. An... more

Earthquake 3" Is A Beast!
My Chipper / Shredder arrived on-time and well packaged. The assembly instructions were easy to follow. (Thanks to other reviewers who remind us to NOT drop hardware pieces in the openings! I was VERY careful.)

Spend the money for the Tow Bar. I'm 6'2". Trying to maneuver the Earthquake without the tow bar *may* work if you're about 5', but the angles are all wrong for tall people. The tow bar is a snap to hook up and use. Spend the money for the Tow Bar. (Yes. I wrote that... more

"Who knew there was a place called Chippers Direct??? I was all set to buy a different chipper from a different supplier. The lady who helped me on the phone was knowledgeable and helpful. Even though the price was a touch more, I knew Chippers Direct was the way to go. I'm very pleased. I'll be back in touch when I'm ready for a log splitter...."

Powerful Chipper / Shredder
Box arrived and Chipper / Shredder was easy to set up.

Shortened two bolts that obstructed the flow of material into the hopper and removed the cover at the feeder tube into the chipper.
Engine starts easy, always on first pull and is quite powerful. Used it quite extensively over the past days and I'm very satisfied with the unit.

Works as advertised and as shown on various videos.

You need to wear safety glasses and use a stick to push material into the shredder if it is stuck in... more

Powerful!
Excellent machine for the price. I am especially pleased with the 305cc engine. It was well worth the extra cost. Very simple assembly. Pulled the guards, of course, and will likely grind off the bolt heads in the chute, though I haven't had any real problems with feed as long as I poke it in with a soft-wood board. I know the manufacturer's hate to hear this, but I've never owned a chipper yet that didn't need the guards taken off, and the use of a pokin' board.

Sort of like the... more

Good Gear
My chipper / shredder arrived on time and in perfect condition. The shipping carton was made of super duty cardboard and did it's job.
With fresh gas and the included oil added to the engine it started on the second pull. I can't comment on the engines sound level because I always wear hearing protection.

The only negative I've found is the claim of a reduction ratio of 20:1. I was shredding some ornamental grass and the reduction seemed closer to 10:1. On the other hand I also shredded... more

Manufacturer Response
Brand Rep
Frank,
Frank

I am glad to hear that you are enjoying our chipper shredder. I wanted to provide some information about the reduction ratio.

Reduction ratio is a little different on all types of debris. It mostly depends on how dense of product is being used. To establish the 20:1 ratio we took the average of the most popular items used. Some product (dry leaves of larger size will come close to 40:1 grass is (moist and shorter cut) is closer to 10:1 an average was estimated at 20:1

Thank you for choosing our product and have a wonderful day.

Great Little Machine
Contrary to my expectation, this little machine has been extremely effective and reliable. Starts immediately on a single pull, and shreds with a vengeance. Many hours of use without a hitch. Hopper chokes up occasionally, but easily cleared. Very happy with this product.

Hard Starter
I got this last fall, added oil & gas, then three pulls and I was off and running. Tried to start it today. Oil was fine, I added gas, but no go. Tried for 10 minutes. The spark plug wire was on also. It's only been used one time.

Monster!
This thing is a beast, 3 in. branches no problem. Pulverized everything I threw in it. Shreds everything to a fine mulch! Stable doesn't move. Only negatives are it's not the easiest thing to move around. Awkward is best way to describe. You have to lean it over and pull at a certain angle.

Its chute is plastic, so while it may not rust it also may need to be replaced sooner if hit with an unseen rock. Occasionally you have to use choke even when warm. Not a big deal. Generally starts every... more

Chop Chop!
This woodchipper is great. I've used it for small tree limbs, brush, and leaves.

There is a certain learning curve to using it efficiently and not getting it clogged by stuffing too much stuff at once down the top chute but, once you learn it you'll be very 'chipper'.

This thing breaks limbs down small. I removed the tri-hammers once to see if I could get bigger chips but they were still very small.

Next time I do larger limbs I will try removing both tri-hammers and j-hammers. It... more
