Q: Even though I have just a couple of trees, being in Kansas wind and at the end of a street, I get huge drift piles of leaves against my fence. I do not need the blower but only the vac/mulcher capability. I got rid of my two cycle so for 4 cycle I was leaning towards the Cub Cadet BV428. However it has plastic and not metal blades and you seem to like the mulching of the Husqvarna 2 cycle better. There will not be any twigs in the drift and I will want to put the mulch on my garden. Based on the above what would be the pros and cons for each model? And your recommendation.
by Russell Strader from Kansas on December 08, 2013

A: Russell,

If you are really talking huge leaf piles, I am not sure that a hand held vacuum option is the best choice for you. You may spend more time emptying your mulch bag than actual vacuuming. Also, you have to make sure you are vacuuming in drier conditions or the leaves will just bend and not shred.

If you do want to go hand held, I feel the Husqvarna would do a much more efficient job than the Cub Cadet, but if you don't put quality gas and oil, that 2-cycle is going to be a rough start.

Q: Your review states this unit is light. 20 lbs. is twice the weight of other units. Reviews say heavy. Which is it?
by Joe from Pennsylvania on December 02, 2013

A: Joe,

I did that review a while ago where most of the competitive models were right around that weight. It is a bit lighter when just used as a blower, and I still feel the when used as a vacuum, the strap takes a bit off of that load as well.

Q: I have been using an Echo leaf vac for about 5 years. It was alright but got jammed a lot when I pulled up a piece of wood chip. Otherwise it worked quite well but that part was quite frustrating. As it is not starting, I decided it was time for a replacement. After reading a number of reviews I chose the Echo ES250. I was sorely dissapointed. It worked worse! It hardly mulched the leaves. Can you tell me what the best hand held leaf vac mulcher is? I do not use the blower.
by Rolfe from Illinois on November 27, 2013

A: Rolfe,

I prefer the mulching system Husqvarna has on the 125BVX:

Husqvarna 125 BVX

They have steel blades along with the impeller to process the debris even further. I am also a big fan of the power in the engine.
by Joe, Product Expert
Q: Hi Joe, I have a very long driveway, about 2/20's of a mile, and am looking for a leaf blower with capability to mulch and vacuum the leaves at the end of the job
by Jeff from North Carolina on November 09, 2013

A: Jeff,

I feel like we are talking about 528 feet give or take and that is huge. Depending on your leave coverage you may want to invest in some other mulching options.

A blower/vacuum that you walk behind would give you the power and capabilities you need in tackling a larger than life clean up chore.

Q: I want a 4 cycle leaf vac equivalent to an electric Black and Decker 2500 leaf hog. Is the Cub Cadet BV428 a good leaf vac?

Where does the bag attach?

by Patrick Wrobel from New York on November 03, 2013

A: Partick,

I feel you will find the BV428 a equivalent to the electric leaf hog in style and ease of use, and even superior in its power capabilities.

the Vacuum bag attaches to the blower's outlet, which in vacuum mode gets installed where the impeller door is on the opposite side of the picture above.
by Joe, Product Expert
Q: I need to pick a leave vacuum/mulcher for a PTA compost system. We will mulch large quantities of bagged leaves with sticks and have no need for blowing. Requirements: Sturdy, $200 plus is ok if reliable, fewer jams etc,. easy to use, not terribly loud, I thought a stand up model until someone said to get a blower/vac
by Philip Davis from New York on October 09, 2013

A: Philip,

A handheld blower/vac truly is only beneficial with smaller amounts of leaf coverage. Also, the leaves have to be in more of a dry condition or the impeller in the vacuum will not reduce them in shreds. They basically just bend and clog. A large amount of leaves could be quite the nightmare in damp conditions. The impeller in a handheld would not be able to handle sticks of any kind.

A walk behind is a solid choice for large area leaf coverage, but we do not have any close to a $200 price range. If you would like to cont me and discuss the models I feel that would help you, please call me at 800-710-7499 Ext. 133.
by Joe, Product Expert
Q: What kinda blade does this have metal or plastic
by Kodie from Alabama on February 11, 2013

A: Kodie - the impeller blade on the Cub Cadet BV428 is a high impact polymer material. It is not metal.

The Cub Cadet BV428 hand held leaf blower delivers professional grade performance at a Do-It-Yourself price. Loaded with features, this leaf blower can handle pretty much anything your yard can can throw at you in terms of clean-up.

The Cub Cadet BV428 is powered by a 25cc, 4-cycle engine - so you don't need to pre-mix the gas and oil. The engine has a noise reducing design, and produces up to 150mph air velocity. You'll be able to clean-up leaves, grass clippings and other yard debris in... more

1 Year Update
This is my second review of this product here on Leaf Blowers Direct. I have had my Cub Cadet 4 cycle blower for a year and it is still going strong. Not one issue. I use this unit at least once a week. I also use it heavily in the fall...at least one tank of gas per session...maybe more. My recommendations: Change the oil when you are supposed to and store the unit over the winter properly (follow the manual) and you will not have a problem. Great product. Highly recommended!
Pros: Easy To Use, I'd Buy It Again, Reliable, Easy To Store
Cons: Heavy

My New Leaf Blower:
The leaf blower has run poorly since day one.The owners manual said that after 3 tank fulls of gas that it would break in and run better. I think I should use it for my new boat anchor. I'm very disappointed with my purchase.

Cub Cadet Bv428 Eval
Overall I am satisfies with the product (Cub Cadet BV428). It starts easy you do need to allow it to warm up before giving it too much throttle (or it will stall). There is a little bit of oil leaking - not sure if it leaks only when in the vacuum mode/position.

As a blower, the Cub Cadet BV428 performs very well. It has a very nice balance (not nose or tail heavy). Easy to use and control.

As a vacuum, the balance is not as nice as a blower. The vacuum u-tube could be redesigned so... more

Fantastic Product!
This blower is fantastic. The manual says something about it stalling during the break-in period and should be fine after 5 tanks of gas, this one was fine after one tank. Super easy to start - I hold it with my right hand while pulling the cord with my left and it starts the first time!

I've had several blowers in the past, both electric ans 2-cycle gas. They all blew leaves just fine, this 4-cycle does it one better. It even blows the millions of acorns along with the leaves. With all the... more

Can't Beat A 4 Stroke!
This is a good piece of equipment. Works great as a leaf vac. as well as a blower. Starts very easily. I've had this unit for about a year now and it has performed flawlessly.

Expensive yes, but no two-stroke blues. Probably helps that I don't use ethanol laced fuels too. I do think the latch for the impeller cover and the release for the blower tube could be improved so that no tools (screwdriver) are necessary, but I guess Cub Cadet's Engineers and Lawyers disagreed on that one. ... more

Great Value! Tons Of Power! Works Just As It Should!
I have used the leaf blower a few times a week since purchased. I have had it now for about a month and a half. Absolutely love the craftsmanship and overall ease of use you would expect from Cub Cadet. I used the vac once and must say I was pretty impressed. The only complaint I'd have which goes for all personal use blower/vacs is the collection bag. I have to empty every 2-3 minutes but it sure beats raking.

Excellent Choice
I decided to get a 4-cycle leaf blower so I wouldn't have any remaining gas/oil fuel mixture at the end of the fall leaf blowing season. I decided on the Cub Cadet since it has the best warranty of 3 years (charged on Citi card and I will get a 4th year with their extended warranty protection at no extra cost). Other manufacturers will give you a 1 year warranty (like Makita)

It has good blowing power and doesn't seem real loud. I have not tried the mulching feature yet. It also starts... more

Great 4-cycle Blower
I like that this is a 4-cycle blower and does not require you to mix oil in the gas. I have a 10,000 square-foot lot and three very large trees. I get a lot of leaves to clean up in the fall, and raking takes forever. I was hoping to use the vac/mulcher more, but my sweet gum tree which has the majority of leaves, drops hard spiky little balls that would clog any vac/mulcher that is not of the highest commercial grade.

I primarily use the blower to blow the leaves off my roof, and out of... more
