Q: Jose,

Who makes the engine on the Cub Cadet SC500EZ?

Lee Lohman

by Lee R. Lohman from Virginia on July 05, 2016

A: Lee,

The engines on these units will be Cub Cadet branded MTD engines.
by Jose, Product Expert
Q: Does the Cub Cadet have a trigger handle to control speed as your review states? I thought the whole top part of the handle rotated to control speed. Also, do you know how large the gas tank is? Thanks
by Dave from Ohio on May 14, 2016

A: Dave - the Cub Cadet SC500EZ uses the Cub Cadet Premium Drive Control system. The premium drive control is located on the upper handle and is used to engage the drive. Pushing the control forward will engage the drive. The farther the control is pushed forward, the faster the mower will propel. Once pressure is released from the control it will return to the neutral position and the drive will be disengaged. The gas tank holds 24 fluid ounces of gasoline, so about 1/5 of a gallon.

by Jose, Product Expert
Q: Is the height of the handle adjustable? I am 6'2" and if the handle is too low and I have to bend over to push it hurts my back.
by Rick from Kentucky on April 23, 2016

A: Rick - the actual height of the handle on the Cub Cadet SC500EZ mower is not adjustable. However, you can make a small adjustment to the PITCH of the handle (the angle at which the handle comes off the mower), which would make a difference in how high or low the handle is off the ground. For someone your height, you'd want to set the pitch of the handle to the highest position.
by Jose, Product Expert
Q: Is this a fixed wide-open throttle, or is the user able to adjust the throttle from idling (let it warm up a little) to fully open?
by Tom from Montana on April 03, 2016

A: Tom - the Cub Cadet 159cc engine on this mower has a fixed throttle setting. The throttle is not adjustable.
by Jose, Product Expert
Q: HOW DO YOU ADJUST CUTTING HEIGHT ...Wheel height or deck adjustment. I don't see any way to adjust rear wheel height.
by Eb Lane from Arkansas on March 26, 2016

A: Eb - the cutting height of two front swivel wheels is adjusted on each wheel individually. There is a lever just below the left rear wheel that is used to adjust cutting height for both rear wheels together
by Jose, Product Expert
Q: Does the cub cadet sc500ez locking system for front wheels have to be done manually, and if so how difficult is that, or an it be done with the switch of a handle
by Rita from Missouri on March 24, 2016

A: Rita - the front swivel wheels are locked manually using a lock pin on each wheel. It's a pretty simple process. There is no mechanism for locking the front swivel wheels on the handle.
by Jose, Product Expert
Q: Does the mower have a blade disconnect or blade override? Does the handle fold? Thanks
by Dennis from North Carolina on July 25, 2015

A: Dennis - the Cub Cadet SC500EZ does not have a blade override system. And the handle does not fold over either.
by Jose, Product Expert
Q: Does this have a recoil start for backup
by Derek from Wisconsin on June 27, 2015

A: Derek - yes, the Cub Cadet SC500EZ does have a recoil starter in addition to the electric start
by Jose, Product Expert
Q: Out of the box, does the battery need to be charged for 12 hours?
by Jim from Washington on August 30, 2014

A: Jim - yes, you would need to charge the on-board battery on the Cub Cadet SC500EZ before you would be able to use the electric start feature on the mower. The battery does not come fully charged as it's shipped to us from Cub Cadet.
by Jose, Product Expert
Q: Cub Cadet SC 500 EZ (21 Inch.) : - Can the front swivel wheels be locked in straight forward?
- Is there an extra cost for right hand side
dischgarge?
Thank you. Walter Debusschere

by Walter Debusschere from Michigan on July 31, 2014

A: Walter - yes, the front caster wheels can be locked in a straight ahead position by simply re-positioning the lock pin on each caster wheel. The mower comes with the side discharge chute cover.
by Jose, Product Expert
Q: Does the battery need periodic charging or does the engine have a charging system to keep it charged? Is this a sealed battery or does it require periodic maitenance (distilled water)?
by Ken from Idaho on May 10, 2014

A: Ken - the battery on the Cub Cadet SC500EZ requires periodic charging with a 12 volt charger that comes with the mower. The battery is a sealed 12 volt battery.
by Jose, Product Expert
Q: What size wheels are on it?
by Carol from Missouri on April 19, 2014

A: Carol - the Cub Cadet SC500EZ mower has 7" front wheels and 8" rear wheels.

Great Mower
I am very happy with the mower with the exception of the condition of the box when it arrived! The box was torn and battered .The battery cover had fallen out of the box! That being said the mower was intact for the most part and undamaged. Very nice mower and seems to cut very well!

Very Poor Craftmenship.
We bought this mower in the fall of 2014. So far it has spent more hours in the shop than mowing our grass. If you bump up against fence the plastic side discharge chute cover falls off and can not be put back on. You have to by new one. Had to buy new battery second season. When replacing battery one of the two wires connected to the charging port just fell off.

Self starter ignition housing is cheap plastic and has came apart. And not to my surprise the mower did not start again... more

Nothing But The Best For My Momma
Very familiar with lawn mowers since i'm a mechanic. My 82-year-old German mother still loves to mow her own yard cause lawn services don't do it right for her, lol. Only problem is, she has problems sometimes pull-starting them now that shes a little older, so I got her the Cub Cadet self-propelled ELECTRIC START.

OMG, now she waits for the grass to grow a 1/4 inch and shes out there cutting it with what she calls her MERCEDES. Thank you for helping me get this in time for her birthday. She... more

New Lawn Mower
Needed a new lawn mower and the Cub Cadet with front swivel wheels was what I wanted in a new mower to negotiate around garden and brick pavers. Looked and everything with swivel wheels was $300 or more.

Not all that happy with the amount of plastic parts, but time will tell. The electric start is spot on and the rear wheel drive is easy to handle. The mulching blade could do a better job, especially when the grass gets a little long. Looking for an after market mulching blade.

Works Great, Started In 2 Seconds
Received mower quickly after ordering. But UPS left it on driveway standing on end and battery had fallen out into the box.

Mower started nearly instantly after pushing start button. Then I started with pull handle in one try. Have mowed 3 times so far (1/4 acre) and it works excellently. We've started it about 15 times.

Quality appears very good.

This is the 3rd Cub Cadet for us with the same swivel front wheels. I've been buying them used for last 10 years, using for 5 years or... more

Excellant Mower So Far
Easy to assemble, easy to start, cuts great. It couldn't be better in my opinion. Sturdy built, heavy 100 lbs but with the swivel wheels you don't have to lift it when you turn so no big deal about the weight. I stop the drive when i need to turn and then re-engage the drive after the turn. I was very impressed over all.

Could Be Much Better
The mower itself runs well. The instructions are awful. the pictures for set up are not worth the paper they are printed on. this mower should take 5minutes to set up and operate. not the case for me.

too bad.

Worst Experience Ever!
Ordered brand new mower and received it and would NOT start. Called Mowers Direct and they wouldn't even assist and brushed me over to Cub Cadet customer service. (Got bounced around for 30mins) Finally reached someone, they tried to troubleshoot and determined it needs to go in for repair. (They wanted me to take it in for repair and I REFUSED as I have no way of doing so). So they offered to get it picked up. This was 6 weeks ago and until this day I haven't seen my mower yet.
