Q: Hi Jim - I'm going to be replacing our 15 year old sump pump with a Watchdog. The currrent sump pump pipe I have connects to the outside via a 1" PVC pipe. I see the SPD-DFK-961 discharges into a 1 1/2" pipe. If I connect the 1 1/2 " pipe from the Watchdog to the existing 1" pipe via a reducer coupling, will that cause problems? The existing 1" pipe runs about 16 feet out onto our lawn. I could replace the 1" pipe no problem, just some extra work. Thanks.

by Dave D from Massachusetts on January 21, 2014

A: Thank you for your interest in Sump Pumps Direct. As a general rule, you never want to reduce the diameter of your discharge pipping. In a lot of cases however, people will run into a situation where they may have a 2" pump discharge and a 1-1/2" discharge pipe or a 1-1/2" pump discharge and a 1-1/4" discharge pipe. In these cases, you would be ok to make those slight reductions. While you would see a reduced pumping capacity from the pump, it generally will not harm the pump. When you start reducing the discharge in larger increments however, you are now causing a heavier backpressure to the pump which will cause it to overheat and burn up much quicker.

Q: Hey Jim,

What is the current draw on the AC motor?

Thanks.

by Ben from Michigan on November 22, 2013

A: The Basement Watchdog model BW1033, which is the primary pump in this kit, has a 3.5 running amp & 7 starting amp rating.
by Jim, Product Expert
Q: Can you recommend an ACpowered sump pump with battery backup that would fit into a 14 deep x 12 diameter well? My current sump pump is a Ridgid Model SP500 12 hp, 60 hz, 120 volt, 3.8 amp.
Thanks.
Rick

by Rick G from Oregon on August 25, 2013

A: Thank you for your interest in Sump Pumps Direct. The Basement Watchdog 1/2 HP Combination Primary and Backup Sump Pump, model BW4000 will fit in a sump pit as small as 12” wide and 14” high (the size of a 5 gallon bucket). It measures 18“ inches from the bottom of the pump to the top of the "Y" connector where it will be attached to the discharge pipe.
The Basement Watchdog 1/3 HP Combination Primary and Backup Sump Pump System, model DFK-961 will fit in a sump pit as small as 10” wide and 14” high (the size of a 5 gallon bucket). It measures 17-3/4“ inches from the bottom of the pump to the top of the "Y" connector where it will be attached to the discharge pipe.
by Jim, Product Expert
Q: If the 120 v pump can't keep up it sounds as if the battery backup pump will kick in---but the units share a common pipe so how can you add water /flow to an already maxed out pipe?? Would this not just increase head pressure on the battery pump causing it to work even harder????
by Mark F from Wisconsin on April 10, 2013

A: Thank you for visiting Sump Pumps Direct. You bring up a very good and important point, Mark! Most primary (1/4HP - 1/2HP) and battery backup pumps discharge to a 1-1/2" discharge pipe and will be installed separately but due to the discharge system already in place, be piped or "Y'd" together. In MOST cases, the total pumping capacity by both pumps at the same time will be handled by that 1-1/2" discharge pipe and will not cause any extra stress or back-pressure on those pumps. That being said, for optimum performance of both pumps, they should be connected to separate discharge pipes. Again, that is not always possible. In cases of extreme high water tables and frequent possible flooding where high capacity pumps are required, you should definitely run a separate discharge pipe for each pump you have installed.
by Jim, Product Expert
Q: Just had one of these systems installed. The green "Battery Charging" light flashes on the control unit. Approximately every 5 seconds. Is that normal operation?
by Marvin from Rhode Island on March 24, 2012

A: This green light should always be flashing. It indicates that the system is operating,
and the battery is connected.
by Jim, Product Expert
Q: Is the PeakFlow 12v maintenance free deep cycle 120ah AGM battery compatible with the WatchDog BW4000 pump system and charger ? Will it last 7.5hrs in continuous mode like the battery sold with the kit? What is the shelf life if used 2x a year intermittently for 1hr. for
by Walter from Michigan on March 12, 2012

A: Per the instructions for the Basement Watchdog battery backup systems, DO NOT use a maintenance-free or a sealed battery. They are made of different materials and
will trigger a false “Battery problem” alarm.
A new Basement Watchdog 7.5 Hour Standby Battery, model 30HDC140S will run this system for a minimum of 7.5 hours continuously. However, most of the time the pump will turn on and off, and the battery will run the pump intermittently for days. In addition, the unique materials in the battery enable it to last for five to seven years in standby service.
by Jim, Product Expert
Q: does Basement Watchdog 1/3 HP Combination Primary and Backup Sump Pumps w/ Battery and Acid, have everything I need or are there necessary parts that are not included? (beyond the battery box)
by Kim Laing from Connecticut on January 14, 2012

A: A few items you would need to supply on your own would be:

1-1/2” rigid PVC pipe

A 1-1/2” PVC pipe connector or a 1-1/2” rubber union

1-1/2" PVC 90 degree elbow(s)

PVC pipe cleaner and cement

A surge protector (optional)
by Jim, Product Expert
Q: Can the Basement Watchdog 1/3 Combination (spd-dfk-961kit) accommodate 2 batteries? If yes, will they both charge properly? Will that provide twice the battery backup pump time?
by Brian from Connecticut on January 13, 2012

A: No, the only Basement Watchdog system capable of handling 2 batteries is the Big Dog and it will provide twice the run time with the 2 batteries connected in parallel.
by Jim, Product Expert
Q: hello Jim, Does the spd-dfk-961kit come with a battery box? Bob from N.Y.
by Robert Van Fossen from New York on May 03, 2011

A: No, it does not. We do have the Moeller Model 042214 Injection-Molded Battery Box available for $12.99 plus shipping or you can pick one up locally.
by Jim, Product Expert
Q: What is the width of the combination sump pump with battery back up?
by Frank from New Jersey on March 11, 2011

A: The overall dimensions of this system is 10”W x 17-3/4” H.
by Jim, Product Expert
Q: Do I need a check valve with this unit?
by Elliot from New Jersey on January 27, 2011

A: These combination pump systems from Basement Watchdog have built-in check valves. An additional float switch is not needed.

Survived Hurricane Sandy
I had to post a review after the first big test for my Basement Watchdog system.

I installed this after my basement flooded during Hurricane Irene last year. My old pump couldn't pump the water out faster than it was filling in, then power went out, leaving our basement totally flooded.

When Hurricane Sandy hit, my pump had no problem clearing the sump. . . and then when the power went out, my battery backup took over.

My big question was, how long would this work before the... more

This Is A Nice Piece!
I bought this after re-doing all of my sump lines going outside from a garden hose hookup to 1.5" PVC line. I dug in line out to the curb and ran a secondary to the drain in the house. The installation process was a breeze--make sure you read through the instructions first online before you receive it and get an understanding of everything. This will make your life way easier. After getting my line done up to the sump, it was time to set it in the hole.

The quality seems very good--I... more

Now I'm At Ease
I had just put a new sump pump in and Detroit Had its great Flood. On the Highway cars were under water. I was going to buy a generator for 4 thousand dollars so if my power went off my pump would still work. A friend of mine did that and the power went out and the sump pump he had went out due to age and he still got flooded. I decided to get the dual sump pump basement watchdog. Now I feel better. I have a portable generator but my main concern was the flooding if power went off. I'm... more

Garbage
I bought this unit after being flooded. The battery lasted one year, $100.00+ to replace, so It was not replaced. I trusted the main pump.
The hot water heater broke and the main pump did not work, the whole basement got flooded. The system was 2.5 years old.
So I am $500.00 in hole. STAY AWAY FROM THIS SYSTEM
Cons: Low Quality, Unreliable, Durability, Expensive

Lennart,
We are sorry for your terrible series of events with the water heater breaking. We ask that you please do not discount the Backup pump system, since it still may be working properly and may need some maintenance to the battery. We would also like to clarify that this system is intended for a basement sump pit situation in which ground water is coming in and the system can evacuate that. We would not recommend that our system is used to clear water from a broken water heater and this may have been why the primary could not keep up. Please call us directly if you need further assistance in trouble shooting. You can reach us at 800-991-0466 Ext. 3 for technical support.

So Far So Good!
The sump pump died, so we had to replace it. My husband and I got a quote from a local plumber, and they wanted to charge us big bucks!!

We did some homework and found good reviews on the Watchdog sump pumps. We ordered from Sump Pumps Direct, and it was here in no time...with great prices!

It was easy to install, and works like a dream. As far as durability, only time will tell, but the pump works perfect right now.

Didn't Last 2 Years
The system started to beep and indicated that the back-up pump had been activated. When I check the main pump I found the the pump case had almost completely corroded. Thankfully the battery back-up was able to run long enough for me to replace the complete unit. The unit was less than two years old. Seems a sump pump should be able to tolerate water, this unit did not.

Combination. Primary & Backup
The pump that was in my sump pit had been there for 15 years. It was still working and may have continued for some time but I was aware of the possibility that it could stop at any time. I was aware of the combination pumps available and it sure appealed to me that the battery operated pump would be there in a power outage. After a thorough search of combination pumps available I decided on the SPD-DFK-961 kit.

I was amazed how soon I received the kit after ordering it. I didn't install it... more

Easy Install
My existing sump pump has been running on and off for 10 years here in southern Illinois. It runs a lot during the spring and summer here.

Fearing an aging sump pump might fail I began looking at replacement and backup systems. I don't mind DIY projects but this did not really qualify anyway. My wife could have done it and that is saying something. Measuring the old discharge pipe 18 3/4 in off the floor was the hard part.

Anyway, it is in and running, and fully tested. I never had... more
