Q: I want to add a battery back up system for my sump pump. Although the pump seldom runs it is about 18 years old. What is the life span of a sump pump?

by Perry Crume from Kansas on July 02, 2016

A: Perry,

Primary pumps have a lifespan between 3-10 years usually. They can go 20+ depending on the cycles and what type of water that is running through it.

In order to size a backup properly, I will need a few pieces of infomration first.

What size basin is the pump going in ?

How high vertically and how far horizontally are you pumping?
by Jim, Product Expert
Q: I've owned and used Basement Watchdog battery backup systems for a long time and they have always performed very well for me but I see all these new systems with notification, self-testing and other nice features that would be great to have in a lower cost system. Will they ever improve or upgrade this system?
by Simon F from Wisconsin on November 14, 2014

A: Thank you for your interest in Sump Pumps Direct. And funny you should ask, Simon! Basement Watchdog has recently updated the controller in the BWSP. The newly updated system has been on the shelves and in circulation for about a year now. According to Basement Watchdog, the updated controller has proven its reliability, having sold over 10,000 systems - with only 5 defective units to date.

While this new controller has some similarities to our previous one, some significant hardware and software changes have been made. Those changes include:

• Remote Notification - We have added in terminals which allow for remote notification. This system is now able to communicate with an Auto Dialer, Home Security System or other device, to alert home owners to problems or required maintenance

• AGM Compatible - The most popular revision allows the customer to utilize wet cell, or AGM maintenance free batteries

• Improved Charging System – Improved battery monitoring and charging system

• Weekly Pump Activation – The system will run the pump for a few seconds every week to not only test the pump but to also exercise it which will help prolong the life of the pump

Q: If i was to buy a watchdog combo unit and the main pump goes bad, do I need to replace the entire unit or can I replace just the 1 unit
by Vance from Michigan on July 20, 2012

A: All of the Basement Watchdog combo system pumps can be changed out easily. The primary pump for the 1/3HP system is the model BW1033 and for the 1/2HP system, is model BW1050.
by Jim, Product Expert
Q: I'm considering the Basement Watchdog SPD-BDKIT for $675. I see what appears to be the same pump (BWD12120C), without battery, for $479. So I figure the battery and acid must be about $200. I see the battery (30HDC140S) for $140 and the same battery with acid (SPD-WDBATTERYACID) for $250. Does that mean you're charging $110 for the acid? In one of the Q&A's, you say auto parts stores should have the acid for about $20. OK, what am I missing?
by Darrell Courtley from New Jersey on March 01, 2012

A: Everything that you see is true. Due to the corrosive and hazardous nature of shipping the acid, the cost is elevated. We sell the kit as convenience to those customers that want everything delivered to their door at the same time and we also offer the other options for those that don't mind making a separate trip for the acid to save a few dollars. And yes, most auto parts and big box stores should have the acid available for about $20. You do want to look for 1.265 specific gravity battery acid and it will come in a 6 quart box.
by Jim, Product Expert
Q: If the backup pump is activated due to heavy water flow (to help the main pump) and the AC power stays on, will the system keep charging the battery to allow the backup pump to keep running indefinitely?
by Scott Mueller from Connecticut on January 24, 2012

A: Yes, the controller will keep the battery charging and the pump running indefinitely if needed. This is true for the Basement Watchdog model BWE and the BWSP stand alone battery backup systems as well.
by Jim, Product Expert
Q: Hi Jim:

Can I hook this up to an existing 1-1/4" discharge?

by Jonathan from Massachusetts on November 14, 2011

A: The Basement Watchdog model SPD-BWSPKIT is designed to be installed as a backup pump and can be configured to "sit" above or next to your primary pump. While it's ok to pipe the discharge from the backup pump into the discharge from your primary pump, it is advisable to install a seperate discharge for each pump to maximize the total pumping capacity of each pump.
by Jim, Product Expert
Q: Do I need to leave my battery backup system charging at all times?
by Patrick Mcclone from Wisconsin on January 03, 2011

A: To be completely sure your backup system is fully functional during a power outage or weather event, these systems need to stay plugged in at all times.

by Jim, Product Expert
Q: If I buy a Basement Watchdog pump do I need a Basement Watchdog battery?
by Karen from Illinois on January 03, 2011

A: You can use any deep cycle marine battery, as long as it is not maintenance-free. However, there are several advantages to using a Basement Watchdog battery. The Watchdog battery accommodates the system’s fluid sensor which will sound an alarm when the battery needs water…a very important feature, since a dry battery will not perform. In addition, Basement Watchdog batteries run longer per charge, and last years longer. A typical marine battery will last 2-4 years, while the Watchdog battery will last approximately 5-7 years. Basement Watchdog batteries are shipped dry (without acid) so they stay fresh on the shelf indefinitely, while wet batteries have a short shelf life.

Update 11/16/15: Basement Watchdog has changed this requirement around 2013 and their backup systems will now accept maintenance free batteries. Please refer to their updated installation manual for instructions on the proper method for this battery installation.

by Jim, Product Expert
Q: What kind of battery comes with it?
by Jerry Whalen from New Jersey on December 29, 2010

A: That kit comes with the Basement Watchdog Battery Model 30HDC140S (and acid) which will give the pump up to 7.5 hours of run time.

This Pump Is Bad To The Bone
Since I've lived in my house, I have gone through 3 sump pumps. We live in a very wet area in Southern Indiana and the pump runs about every 40 seconds.

This pump has saved our bacon on many occasions where we didn't have any electricity. It tells you when to put water in the battery, it tells you when its on emergency power, it even tells you when the battery needs replacement.

It was so easy to install. It took me literally 10 minutes to hook it all up. I haven't had any problems... more

Neighbors Had Floods
I bought this secondary pump after 3 of my neighbors had basements that flooded last year after a storm. It was easy to install- I did it myself.

So far it is standing by, but I tested it. It will work if the primary pump fails.

Control Board Died After 6 Years
For a backup that never runs, having the heart of the system outside the pump - the control board died after 6 years shows poor quality. Don't buy.

Customer For Life
My unit ran through Hurricane Irene flawlessly. Ran approximately 10 times per minute for 18 hours.

When I originally purchased the unit there was a slight imperfection. The company sent a full replacement immediately with no questions asked and provided pre-paid shipping for the return of the first unit. I am a customer for life.

Have Used A Basement Watchdog For 10 Years
Long Lasting and Dependable. We have alot of water in our basement on our street but generally don't lose power for very long so the 8 hour battery is perfect for our situation.
We have a 1/2 HP pump and this 1/3 HP is our backup.
Pros: Easy To Use, Reliable, High Quality, I'd Buy It Again

Completely Useless
Agree with the others that have rated this a 1 Star. We have had this system for about 7 years and it is complete junk. Have replaced the battery a couple times and the most recent is dead after about 2 years. There is no "security" with this item and we always worry about it when the power goes out. Do yourself a favor and find another company/system or just buy a small generator to use if your power goes out. I've probably spent over $700 on this system and will not spend... more

Bill,
Thanks for the review. Having a small generator to use is great, if you're home. Otherwise, it's not very useful. Take a look at these backup systems that would be considered a step up from current system.

Sump Pump Special Is An Easy Install
After Hurricane Sandy we decided it was time to install a battery backup pump as insurance for our finished basement.

We had no problems with ordering, and had the unit at my doorstep in 4 or 5 days, with one trip to the home store for inch and a half fittings and PVC pipe.

I spent about 3 hours on the project once I had the material in hand. I ran a garden hose into the sump pit and performed multiple tests on the original AC pump/float and then on the new backup DC pump/float. All... more

Well Pleased With My Purchase Of The Basement Watchdog Special
The merchandise was received in a reasonable time frame and in excellent condition. The pump was installed by me following the easy to understand instructions. The pump worked well after being installed, when I put it to the test by turning off my AC pumps power. The pump is in standby mode now but if needed I know it will work well.
