Q: What is the maximum diameter of this pump? If it doesn't fit next to my wired pump, how does it get mounted above?

Also, I plan to have it installed in a combination pit fed by my laundry washer as well as the drainage pipes. Is it suitable?

by Howard from Illinois on March 12, 2014

A: The dimensions for the Big Dog backup pump with the elbow, are 7-5⁄8H x 9” W. The installation instructions, including the mounting configurations that can be used can be found HERE. Battery backup systems as well as primary sump pumps are not designed to handle the chemicals associated with laundry discharge and in most cases your warranty will be voided when installed as such.
I recommend diverting your laundry discharge to a LAUNDRY/DRAIN PUMP SYSTEM as these are designed specifically for this application and they will also greatly prolong the life of your sump system.

Q: I am interested in the 2 battery system back up sump pump. Can I install this myself.+ I am fairly profecient .
by JIm Dreyer from New Jersey on June 23, 2012

A: If you are somewhat familiar with plumbing and working with PVC, primer and cement, you shouldn't have much of a problem. The pdf of the owners manual is available for download on the PRODUCT PAGE to give you a look at the installation process. It can be found on the right side of the page under the "Specs" tab.
by Jim, Product Expert
Q: Is the PeakFlow 12v maintenance free deep cycle 120ah AGM battery compatible with the WatchDog BW4000 pump system and charger ? Will it last 7.5hrs in continuous mode like the battery sold with the kit? What is the shelf life if used 2x a year intermittently for 1hr. for
by Walter from Michigan on March 12, 2012

A: Per the instructions for the Basement Watchdog battery backup systems, DO NOT use a maintenance-free or a sealed battery. They are made of different materials and
will trigger a false “Battery problem” alarm.
A new Basement Watchdog 7.5 Hour Standby Battery, model 30HDC140S will run this system for a minimum of 7.5 hours continuously. However, most of the time the pump will turn on and off, and the battery will run the pump intermittently for days. In addition, the unique materials in the battery enable it to last for five to seven years in standby service.
by Jim, Product Expert
Q: I'm considering the Basement Watchdog SPD-BDKIT for $675. I see what appears to be the same pump (BWD12120C), without battery, for $479. So I figure the battery and acid must be about $200. I see the battery (30HDC140S) for $140 and the same battery with acid (SPD-WDBATTERYACID) for $250. Does that mean you're charging $110 for the acid? In one of the Q&A's, you say auto parts stores should have the acid for about $20. OK, what am I missing?
by Darrell Courtley from New Jersey on March 01, 2012

A: Everything that you see is true. Due to the corrosive and hazardous nature of shipping the acid, the cost is elevated. We sell the kit as convenience to those customers that want everything delivered to their door at the same time and we also offer the other options for those that don't mind making a separate trip for the acid to save a few dollars. And yes, most auto parts and big box stores should have the acid available for about $20. You do want to look for 1.265 specific gravity battery acid and it will come in a 6 quart box.
by Jim, Product Expert
Q: what is the minimum diameter and depth of the sump pit in order to use an existing plus battery backup unit?-
by Marion from Pennsylvania on December 29, 2011

A: Due to the design of this system, it can be installed in a couple of different ways. For narrow pits, approximately 12 inches in diameter, it can be installed to sit just above your primary pump as long as you have enough depth (22-24 inch minimum). For a standard sized pit (18 inch diamer by 24 inch depth), it could be installed to sit next to your primary pump.
by Jim, Product Expert
Q: I have just had a Little Giant pump installed along with the drain tile. On installation they have installed a 2nd line to the outside for a battery backup pump. How hard are these to intall? the company I used want $995 to install the battery backup. Please let me know do you have instructions that I could look at?
by Terry Palmer from Minnesota on July 17, 2011

A: If you are handy at all, they really are not that difficult to install. Instructions are available to download and view at http://www.sumppumpsdirect.com/Basement-Watchdog-SPD-BDKIT-Sump-Pump/p1902.html. Once there, click on the "SPECS" tab and locate the "Download Documents" box on the right side of the page. There you can download a pdf file of the instruction manual which includes the installation instructions.

Q: I have a zoeller 507 in a house i just bought . the battery was dry and the chargerwas makeing a loud mum I replaced the battery. Now the charger still mums and the light is green then every 5 to 7 seconds turns yellow and mums louder. do you think the charger is okay or is it bad and needs to be replaced
by Alan Braendly from New York on May 22, 2011

A: The battery charged and charging LED’s will alternate during normal charging operation. This is normal. If you're concerned about the loud humming, you could call Basement Watchdog tech support at (800) 991-0466.
by Jim, Product Expert
Q: Is the 6hr or 7.5hr battery included with the Big Dog kit?
by Rob Johnson from Wisconsin on March 16, 2011

A: The Big Dog kit includes the 7.5 hour battery and acid. You also have the option, with this kit only, to add an additional battery, connected in parallel for additional battery run time, however keep in mind this will also lengthen the charging time.
by Jim, Product Expert
Q: a couple of questions for you Jim.....

Shopping for a battery backup system and considering either the Stormpro 2100GPH (SPD-STORMPRODCKIT) or the Big Dog (BWD12120c).
I have read reviews including some mixed on the Big Dog but like the idea that I can add a second battery for extended pumping time if needed. Can you add a second battery to the Stormpro and if so what is the projexted time/life?
Any thoughts or concerns with either one system over the other - I have read the reviews.
Thanks Jim,
David

by David Ball from Wyoming on March 02, 2011

A: Yes, you can add an additional battery (in parallel) to the StormPro system. It would extend the battery run time to between 15 & 20 hours, however, please keep in mind that it will also take longer to charge both batteries.
Both systems are excellent and I would recommed either one.
by Jim, Product Expert
Q: Do I need to leave my battery backup system charging at all times?
by Patrick Mcclone from Wisconsin on January 03, 2011

A: To be completely sure your backup system is fully functional during a power outage or weather event, these systems need to stay plugged in at all times.

by Jim, Product Expert
Q: If I buy a Basement Watchdog pump do I need a Basement Watchdog battery?
by Karen from Illinois on January 03, 2011

A: You can use any deep cycle marine battery, as long as it is not maintenance-free. However, there are several advantages to using a Basement Watchdog battery. The Watchdog battery accommodates the system’s fluid sensor which will sound an alarm when the battery needs water…a very important feature, since a dry battery will not perform. In addition, Basement Watchdog batteries run longer per charge, and last years longer. A typical marine battery will last 2-4 years, while the Watchdog battery will last approximately 5-7 years. Basement Watchdog batteries are shipped dry (without acid) so they stay fresh on the shelf indefinitely, while wet batteries have a short shelf life.

Update 11/16/15: Basement Watchdog has changed this requirement around 2013 and their backup systems will now accept maintenance free batteries. Please refer to their updated installation manual for instructions on the proper method for this battery installation.

Had It For 6 Years
I installed my Basement Watchdog in 2005 after determining I needed a serious backup for my existing sump. I installed the Dog on separate piping to the backyard since my initial problem was the street main backing up during a hurricane. My existing tiny sump had no place to pump the water. Now I have two very large sumps that operate independently. The Watchdog is definitely the back up since I have set the float sensor two inches higher than the main pump (both in the same sump)

So Far.....i Am Very Impressed With This Backup Pump Kit
I installed the Basement Watchdog Big Dog Backup Pump about 5 weeks ago. It was relatively easy to do, the diagrams in the instructions were easy to understand.

After installing the pump and battery, I tested it and it worked great. I have since tested the pump a few times and everything seems to be fine.

I especially like the light on the control box that tells me if the backup pump was engaged. Having the backup pump on my system gives me a lot more peace of mind now.

Unreliable Electronics
I had my system for about 4 or 5 years when a board in the controller box went bad - fuse blows when plugged in. I called they company and they said I had to remove the systems from my sump and sent it back in for repair. After going through all of that and getting the unit repaired for about $200 I re-installed it and it worked for about another year before the same thing happened again. Needless to say I find that the electronics are unreliable and I am replacing the system with something... more

Scott,
We are sorry that you were not pleased with this system. We would like to clarify that if the controller is out of warranty we do offer a repair service for about $100-$120 that includes a 1 year warranty on this repair. In your case, it sounds like the repair of your controller may have been covered under warranty. Battery Issues
An alarm went off indicating a battery problem. After further investigation it turns out that the battery water level was low (no cell was dry). I topped off each cell with water and reset the alarm. The next day the alarm sounded again indicating a battery problem. This went on for weeks until it just stopped sounding.

The response from tech support was slow (took days) and useless. DO NOT buy this system, more trouble than it's worth.

Couldn't Keep Up
The rating on the backup system is the same as my Zoeller primary pump, however when the power failed the Watchdog battery backup system was overwhelmed and could not keep up and flooded my basement. This system looks great on paper but was really unimpressed with the quality....

Brand Rep
Dave,
We are sorry that you are not satisfied with the Bigdog. This system is plenty strong to withdraw 2200 GPH at a 10'f Lift. Please take into consideration that if the lift is higher than this, it will decrease pumping capacity. Feel free to contact us directly if you are in need of further assistance.

Unreliable Controller
I have owned two of these units. The controller on the first unit failed twice. I bought the second as a replacement for the first. The distributor assured me the manufacturer had updated the controller and solved the issue of reliability. Unfortunately, the new unit's controller also failed in the same manner. I have since upgraded to a more expensive system with no problems.

Stood Up To Hurricane Sandy
I have a summer home at the NJ shore outside of Atlantic City. It is a 95 year old perfectly restored property that is 1 1/2 blocks from the beach. Last year I decided to install 3 of the Basement Watchdog Big Combo units to replace three standard pumps in my 1500 sq. ft. basement.

We have just experienced the devastation of Hurricane Sandy while physically being in Florida for the season. We lost power in the first day of the storm, most likely sometime Monday; and just had the power... more

Big Dog Works Well
I wonder if these reviews are all for the same product? I have owned the "Big Dog" pump for 5 years. It is the top of the line Emergency Watchdog pump that is 1/2 hp. Emergency Watchdog makes smaller cheaper pumps. Some of these reviews must be intended for those. The big dog pump has performed very well for me. I have had no reliability issues. It pumped for 14 hours through Hurricane Sandy and handled the load fine. You do get alarms whenever power is cut off or the pump... more

John Recommends This Basement Watchdog Product
Jim, the Sump Pump Expert
Product Expert
John,
Just for clarification, Basement Watchdog is the name of the brand. Big Dog, Special and Emergency are their three different options of backup pumps. If you purchased a combo "Big Dog" combo system, that included a 1/2 HP primary pump. I would not consider the DC backup pump on the Big Dog system to be 1/2 HP.

Don't Waste Your Money!
Bought the basement watchdog as a backup for .5 HP sump pump that has occasional use. The low capacity pumping capability of the watchdog pump is totally inadequate to serve my needs. I can't imagine where it would be useful since it pumps maybe 20% of what is produced from my small 110V sump pump. I would be glad to ship it back for some refund. Suggest that the company provide more accurate info on pumping capacity in order to better inform the buyers.

Battery Back Up Product
I had a service person hook it up and looks great but really hasn't been used as we have not lost electricity. Nice lights and seems like there isn't any need to do anything at this time. It looks and seems totally automatic and I really hope that's as far as it goes.

This is just in case we were to lose electricity as our lower level is finished. (Your cast iron sump 3/4 pump is awesome as that has functioned well during heavy rains we received this summer). Back to the back up it's... more
