  5 Questions
Q: BWC1 questions:
1. Is the 15 amp limit for pump start or run amps? (Many pumps have start amps greater than 15) Will this work with a pump that has start 23 amps and run 10 amps or a pump that has start 16 amps and run 7.5 amps?

2. What is the distance between the bottom and upper float rings? For instance, if the bottom float ring fails then how much higher will the water go before the upper float ring is activated?

3. What are the dimensions of the BCW1?

Thank you.

by Frank E from Colorado on September 14, 2015

A: Thank you for your interest in Sump Pumps Direct, Frank!
The ratings listed for the Basement Watchdog, like all other piggyback float switches that we offer, refer to the pump running amps. MOST are rated for 120V.
The water would need to raise about another 2-3/4 inches if the bottom float does not activate the pump.
The "cage" dimensions for the floats are 5"L X 2-1/8"D.
If you have any other questions, please let me know.

Q: I have a utility vault that i need to control water infiltration on. I have to control the pump within a 4" vertical rise in water. What switch will work for me. The vault does not have a sump area and i cannot put one in. Thats the reason for the four inch problem. I need it to come on when there is two or three inches of water in the vault.
by Chris Christianson from Oregon on August 12, 2012

A: What are the dimensions of the vault? Depending on the area, the Basement Watchdog Dual Vertical Float Switch & Controller may do the job for you.
The dual float switch contains two large floating rings enclosed within a protective cage. Water will lift the bottom float by a 1⁄4", which will activate the pump. If for any reason the lower float does not activate the pump, the water will rise and activate the second switch. As the pump evacuates the water from the pit the floats will drop. The pump will run for an additional 10 seconds to extend the cycle after the lower float drops.
Note: When mounting the float switch, position the bottom of the cage at the height you want the pump to activate.

Another option might be the Pro Series Ultimate Sensor Pump Controller System, model USC3. This system has a minimum installation of 3" above the bottom of the pump However, if you have a larger area to evacuate, this system can be programed to run your pump anywhere from 5-45 seconds from the time the water level drops below the sensor. In addition, this controller controller is that it will sound an alarm when problems exist or maintenance is needed. The controller will also run the pump once a week for approximately four (4) seconds. This test will exercise the pump and help ensure the pump is working properly.
The PHCC Pro Series Ultimate Solid State Controller features a series of warnings (audible and visual) that pinpoint potential problems with the pump, sensor and power conditions. The controller will sound an alarm when power has been interrupted, when the pump has run for more than 10 minutes continuously, when the 9V battery is low or if the controller detects a weak or no signal from the sensor. The 9V battery (sold separately) runs the controller during a power outage, allowing it to sound an alarm if the circuit breaker trips, the controller is not plugged in securely, or the home’s power is interrupted.
Note: The 9V battery will only power the controller, not the pump.

Q: Hi you said Runs the pump for an additional 10 seconds can this be turn off
by David from Pennsylvania on June 07, 2012

A: No, the timer is built into the controller and there are no adjustments available. You might take a look at the Pro Series Ultimate Sensor Pump Controller System, model USC3.
by Jim, Product Expert
Q: i have a ridgid sum pump. will this basement watchdog work for this pump
by Kenneth Durante from Illinois on April 28, 2012

A: The Basement Watchdog model BWC1 Dual Vertical Float Switch & Controller can be used with other manual sump pumps that draw up to 15 amps.

by Jim, Product Expert
Q: Could I use this with a sewage ejector pump?
by Vince from Illinois on January 07, 2012

A: The Basement Watchdog Dual Vertical Float Switch and Controller is really designed for sump pump applications for pumps up to a maximum of 1/2HP and 15 Amps.

Seems Like A Good Product
Looks foolproof and is working fine. It would be nice to have a loose cord to feed through the small hole in the lid of the sump tank that's made for the cord of the pump. Had to cut out a piece of the cover to fit the cord past the flange of the vent pipe.

"First product came out of its packaging, and rolling around loose in the box. Parts were broken but I installed the device anyway and made it work. Complained about the shipping to customer service. I was sent, at no charge, a new in box product with no return required. Installed the replacement and it is working well. Thank you customer service."

Main Sump Float Fails....panic!!
I got a sump pump alarm at 4:30 AM on a Friday indicating the main pump had failed and the backup was operating. I discovered a defective main sump pump float. Ordered a replacement later that morning and received it the following Monday without having to pay additional freight. Installed it in about 10-15 minutes.

Basement Watchdog Is A Super Product!
I bought a sump pump from a box store about a year ago. Installed it in my backyard in a catch basin fed by perforated drainage pipe.

Within a year the float switch had malfunctioned and I was told I'd have to buy a whole new pump!

Not so! To the rescue rode Sump Pumps Direct! They sold me a Basement Watchdog which is a quick fix.
Disabled my old float switch and installed the Basement Watchdog. Elapsed time, maybe 10 minutes.

Works like a charm. Jim, one of their Experts, was... more

Quiet And Fast
I needed a replacement for my old pedestal sump system, and really liked the Zoeller models, but had seen a fair amount of negative feedback concerning the units with the built-in float switches.

After some research and great information from Jim at Sump Pumps Direct, I settled on the Zoeller N53 "switch-less" pump coupled with the Basement Watchdog BWC1 float switch and controller.

It's been three months now and I really don't think I could be happier. If the switch does fail,... more

The Float Switch I Needed....
I looked on line for days for a very specific switch. My basement was filling up with up to an inch of water. The chimney to the basements fire place was the problem.

On getting quotes upwards to $3500.00 to fix the problem. I decided to examine the situation myself...There was a small 4"x 4" cleanout opening which led to a small cavity in the bottom of the chimney...The cavity would fill with water during a big rain then proceed to flood the basement.

I took days worth of... more
